While Saturday Night Live’s mandatory underwear directive is well documented, one of the show’s unwritten rules, it would seem, is to avoid being an asshole to boss Lorne Michaels at all costs. Actually, come to think of it, that’s probably a good rule of thumb for any job.
During The Howard Stern Show’s Stern-less SNL “roundtable special,” former cast member Bobby Moynihan shared a story about the time he inadvertently did his Lorne Michaels impression in front of Michaels while telling an anecdote during a pre-show cast dinner with the week’s guest host. “It got really quiet for a second, and he just went, like, ‘Continue,’” Moniyhan recalled.
But that was nothing compared to the time that one cast member blatantly, and hilariously, disrespected the producer. “I was sitting next to Mark McKinney when he pretended to fall asleep,” Ana Gasteyer explained. “Like pretty obviously,...

More than 25 years later, Mike Myers is breaking down the basis for one of his most quotable characters.
Although he admitted Lorne Michaels provided some inspiration, the Saturday Night Live alum revealed that the Austin Powers villain Dr. Evil was originally based on another more specific character reference.
“No, it was Donald Pleasence forever,” he told Vulture, referring to the actor’s performance as Ernst Stavro Blofeld in the 1967 James Bond film You Only Live Twice.
Myers said there was “just a little tiny overlay” with the SNL creator, for whom he worked on the NBC sketch comedy show from 1989 to 1995.
“I’m Canadian. He’s Canadian. He had an educated Canadian accent, and I have a Scarborough accent,” he explained. “One time he goes, ‘Mike, do you want to come up to the Hamptons?’ I was like, ‘Am I fired?’ I went, and it was like, ‘That’s Mick’s room,...

Carrie Fisher was hesitant to enter Austin Powers’ groovy world. The star had a small role in 1997 film “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery” but, according to director Jay Roach, Fisher was “so nervous” about the bit part. Fisher played a family therapist who works with Mike Myers’ Dr. Evil, his clone Mini-Me (Verne Troyer), and son Scott Evil (Seth Green).
“One of my favorite days of shooting ‘Austin’ was when Carrie Fisher played the therapist,” Roach wrote in a piece for Vulture. “She was so nervous about it, and she didn’t know if she could be funny. She had recently become sober after a public struggle with addiction, an experience she mined in her novel and film, ‘Postcards from the Edge.’ The hope was that her being super functional as the therapist would play against what people knew about her at the time.”

Yeah, baby, yeah! Or perhaps Maybe, baby, maybe! is more fitting. As Mike Myers gears up to return to the swamp with Shrek 5, we can’t help but wonder if one of his other trademark characters, Austin Powers, will be making a randy return to the screen. And while nothing is on the docket just yet, Myers isn’t ruling it out.
When pressed if Austin Powers would return in a fourth installment, Mike Myers told TooFab after some hesitation, “I would be surprised if it didn’t.” Myers has spoken of an Austin Powers 4 before, saying he would absolutely love to do it. But with nothing in the pipeline, Myers really hasn’t had much of anything to go on. At the same time, even though Shrek 5 is set for a June 1st, 2026 release, Myers wouldn’t fork over any details on that movie, either, saying,...

Comedy heavyweight Will Ferrell has reflected on the enduring legacy of one of his most iconic and beloved movies more than a decade after its release. First rising to prominence as a cast member of the comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live, Ferrell branched out into comedy movies, securing parts in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery and its sequel Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, as well as leading roles in movies like A Night at the Roxbury. He achieved global fame in 2003 when he co-starred in 'Frat Pack' comedy Old School, which grossed $87 million worldwide.
The success of the movie saw Ferrell become a comedy leading man, starring in a slew of successful comedy movies across the mid to late 2000s, including Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Wedding Crashers, Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby, the Starsky & Hutch remake, and Step Brothers with John C. Reilly.

Three of the James Bond movies were remakes of previous Bond films, and these remakes include some of the absolute best (and absolute worst) of 007s on-screen adventures. Remaking past Bond movies might start becoming more common in the next couple of iterations of the franchise, because the producers have just about run out of Ian Fleming stories to adapt. Since very few of the Bond movies have actually stuck to the source material that gave them their titles, the next incarnation of the Bond series could see Eon going back and adapting Flemings novels more faithfully.
But Eon (and other producers) have been readapting Flemings works since long before they ran out of new ones to turn into movies. Casino Royale the very first Bond novel has been adapted for the screen a grand total of three times, and each version has been vastly different than the last. When...

Good news for that one birthday party impersonator: Austin Powers might be coming back. After seemingly milking the bespectacled superspy for all he was worth more than two decades ago, Mike Myers just hinted that a reboot could be on its way sooner rather than later.
Myers recently attended New York Magazine’s Vulture Festival, where he was presented with an honorary “Master of Culture” degree for his non-Love Guru contributions to film and television. At the event, Myers recalled how he first heard about Dana Carvey from a Toronto taxi dispatcher (since he never watched Saturday Night Live growing up) and admitted that, despite being a veritable comedic catchphrase factory, he never consciously “designed” catchphrases.
But the biggest tidbit of news was revealed before he was presented with the fake degree. Speaking with TooFab outside of the venue, Myers was asked about potential revivals of some of his most iconic characters,...

With its ’70s-era production details and sprawling age-spanning ensemble, Saturday Night has high hopes for the Oscars this year. But if the Jason Reitman period piece manages to win one, it will achieve something that the cast it depicts never could.
Though Saturday Night Live has racked up a record-breaking 103 Emmys and churned out generational talent with regularity over its 50 seasons, only six among its more than 150 castmembers have ever been nominated for an Oscar (five if you don’t include one-episode-and-done player Laurie Metcalf).
Its only winner? Robert Downey Jr., just this past March for Oppenheimer. And his 1985-86 SNL stint is a career footnote.
“I don’t think it’s conscious,” says Turner Classic Movies host Dave Karger, an Oscar prognosticator and author of 50 Oscar Nights, “but there might be something going on. There’s obviously a disconnect between SNL and [film] awards.”

The legendary Quincy Jones just passed away at the age of 91. And while he’ll be remembered for his work in the music industry, his TV credits and his not giving a fuck in interviews during his golden years, some folks on the internet have also been celebrating his contribution to a pop-culture franchise he had absolutely no hand in creating: Austin Powers.
Mike Myers’ swinging spy character just wouldn’t have been the same without the upbeat theme song that plays during the opening credits of all three movies. If you don’t believe me, try syncing up the beginning of any Austin Powers movie with, say, Nine Inch Nails, and see how shagadelic it is.
The track is called “Soul Bossa Nova,” and it was apparently composed by Jones in less time than it takes to watch an episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

It is impossible to overstate Quincy Jones' influence on music and the music business throughout the second half of the 20th century. There wasn't a genre that Jones, who passed away yesterday at the age of 91, couldn't master as a composer, producer, performer, or all three. He kicked off his career playing trumpet for vibraphone god Lionel Hampton, served as trumpeter and music director for Dizzy Gillespie, and produced effervescent pop hits like "It's My Party" for Lesley Gore while expanding his range compositionally via jazz LPs and, perhaps most importantly, film music -- a field where the African-American artist stood out among a sea of white men.
Curiously, there isn't as much serious scholarship on the work of Jones, which is rather astounding considering his seismic 1970s and '80s impact as a producer for Michael Jackson on two of the top-selling LPs of all time ("Off the Wall...

Two years have gone by since we learned that Elizabeth Hurley (Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery) had signed on to star in Piper, a new horror film from director Anthony Waller. More than a year has passed since the film had its world premiere at FrightFest… but now it’s ready for a wider release. Digital Media, the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, has picked up Piper distribution rights and will be making it available to rent/own on all North American digital HD internet, cable, and satellite platforms, as well as on DVD, as of November 12th.
Back in 1995, director Waller made an impressive breakthrough with the thriller Mute Witness… then quickly squandered the good will he had earned with that movie by following it up with An American Werewolf in Paris. Waller has made a couple movies since the Paris debacle...

Demi Moores latest project is the horror movie The Substance, which, surprisingly, is breaking a 13-year Rotten Tomatoes record for her. Demi Moore began her acting career in the early 1980s, making her big screen debut in 1981 in a project titled Choices, and the following year, she joined the soap opera General Hospital as Jackie Templeton. After a couple more projects in film and TV, Moore got her big break in 1985 when she played Jules in Joel Schumachers coming-of-age movie St. Elmos Fire, which made her part of the Brat Pack (though shes not fond of that label).
Since then, Moore has branched out to different genres, with some of her most notable projects being the comedy-drama About Last Night, the supernatural romance movie Ghost, the legal drama A Few Good Men, the action comedy Charlies Angels: Full Throttle, and the drama Margin Call. "Shagadelic, Baby!" - Austin Powers enthusiastically utters this catchphrase many times, expressing intense positive emotion, and it has become a pop culture phenomenon. "Throw Me A Frickin' Bone Here." - Dr. Evil uses this quote to express frustration, emphasizing his simple request for sharks with laser beams on their heads, making it one of his best sayings. "Austin Powers" is arguably one of the most beloved comedy movie franchises in history. Beginning with "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" in 1997, Mike Myers helped craft a James Bond spoof that came at just the right time, with "GoldenEye" reviving 007 to kick off Pierce Brosnan's tenure with the character. For as much as the movie is remembered, it actually didn't top the box office when it opened -- the film lost out to an oft-forgotten Kurt Russell thriller.

In Jay Roach's 1997 James Bond spoof "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery," the film's villain, Dr. Evil (Mike Myers), aims to murder off his arch-nemesis by dropping him into a tank full of man-eating sharks. In a supervillainous twist, the sharks will be equipped with laser beams affixed to their heads. Dr. Evil says he likes his pets to have a well-cooked meal before eating. He then cackles maniacally. A lieutenant of his, however, informs Dr. Evil that buying sharks equipped with lasers is immensely difficult and that the tank is, instead, filled with flesh-eating sea bass. Dr. Evil isn't thrilled. "You know, I have one simple request," Dr. Evil says, "and that is to have sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads!"
One cannot say if there's a direct connection to the above scene and a James Bond movie that Sean Connery once wrote, but there are a few uncanny similarities.

Some classic rock songs are better the second time around. Cher released “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” as an uptempo song, but Nancy Sinatra’s ballad cover became more iconic. Sinatra discussed the movie that revived her cover.
Nancy Sinatra wanted to flip Cher’s ‘Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)’ on its head
During a 2013 interview with Vice, Sinatra was asked if she ever covered songs to improve them. “I don’t know that I had that in mind, but I think sometimes I did do it better than the original,” he said. “Like ‘Bang Bang.’ And no offense to Cher, because her record is great and it sold millions of copies. But I like turning a song around and really hearing what the lyric says.”
A journalist said Sinatra’s version of the tune emphasized its darkness. “Another thing I like to do is take...

When a movie making $500m – half a billion – is considered a financial disappointment, might it be time to rethink the Hollywood model?
The story of Disney’s live action take on The Little Mermaid was glossed over a little when the studio’s box office performance was assessed this year. The film, directed by Rob Marshall and starring the terrific Halle Bailey in the lead role, cost the studio a reported $250m or so to make, and returned $569m once its global takings had been totted up.
A decent amount of change by most people’s standards, and for another other studio but Disney, that’d be regarded as a decent result. Yet it’s not enough by the standards of corporate Hollywood, and certainly not the numbers the company was hoping for when it greenlit the film.

After the massive success of the "Wayne's World" movies, studios were eager to capitalize on the popularity of "Saturday Night Live" cast member Mike Myers and his ability to create truly memorable characters. While womanizing James Bond spoof that is Austin Powers wasn't something Myers brought to "SNL" like the "Wayne's World" sketches, the shagadelic spoy blew up in pop culture pretty quickly.
"Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" made him a household name in 1997, complete with a massive marketing campaign and merchandise ranging from Austin Powers Halloween costumes to vintage tin lunchboxes. For a few short years, it seemed like Hollywood got swept up in Powers-mania, as two sequels were released in fairly quick succession. But after "Austin Powers in Goldmember" in 2002, the character pretty much disappeared from the pop culture consciousness. The Austin Powers franchise consists of three movies that are both successful at the box office and critically acclaimed, with the series revolving around the character Austin Powers and his rivalry with Dr. Evil. Mike Myers is at the center of the franchise, having written, produced, and starred in all three films. He was inspired to create the character of Austin Powers while listening to "The Look of Love" by Burt Bacharach. Fans can watch the Austin Powers movies in either release order or chronological order, with the first movie premiering in 1997 and the third and final movie released in 2002. Despite rumors of a fourth film, the trilogy is seen as a suitable end to the series.

(Welcome to Did They Get It Right?, a series where we look at Oscars categories from yesteryear and examine whether the Academy's winners stand the test of time.)
Best Original Song is such an odd category. On the Academy Awards broadcast, it is the one that gets the most airtime, as it is typical to perform all five of the nominated tunes during the show. While this is technically meant to showcase the nominees, it is really an excuse to break up what would be a fairly monotonous, long awards show.
However, most of the songs nominated for Best Original Song aren't all that interesting. A lot of the time, these tunes aren't integral to the film itself in the slightest, and they are simply musical wallpaper to play over the end credits of a movie as you file out of the theater. This is also the category most susceptible...

Nearly a year has gone by since we learned that Elizabeth Hurley (Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery) had signed on to star in Piper, a new horror film from director Anthony Waller. Now The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that the movie is set to have its world premiere at FrightFest this Sunday, August 27th – and ahead of the premiere, a trailer for Piper has arrived online! You can check it out in the embed above.
Back in 1995, director Waller made an impressive breakthrough with the thriller Mute Witness… then quickly squandered the good will he had earned with that movie by following it up with An American Werewolf in Paris. Waller has made a couple movies since the Paris debacle – the 2000 Bill Pullman thriller The Guilty, the 2009 sci-fi horror film 9 Miles Down – and here’s hoping that Piper will earn him some positive attention again.

Hollywood icon and literal living legend Clint Eastwood turned 93 on Wednesday, marking yet another amazing milestone in a life full of them. And in honor of the “Unforgiven” director’s big day, fellow action star Arnold Schwarzenegger paid tribute in a short but nevertheless touching Instagram post.
“Happy birthday, Clint! You’ve inspired me, you’ve mentored me, and you’re a wonderful friend. At 93, you prove that heroes don’t retire – they reload. You’re a legend,” Schwarzenegger wrote in a message posted along with a recent but undated photo of the pair skiing.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first scripted TV series, the Jennifer Lopez-starring action film The Mother and documentaries featuring Anna Nicole Smith and Barack Obama are among the high-profile projects hitting Netflix this month.
At the end of May, the streamer is dropping the Schwarzenegger-starring spy comedy Fubar, in which the former California governor and Top Gun: Maverick’s Monica Barbaro play a father and daughter who discover they’ve each been secretly working as CIA operatives as they’re forced to team up and get to know each other’s true selves.
And earlier this month, in time for Mother’s Day, Lopez plays an assassin who emerges from hiding to protect a daughter she gave up for adoption years earlier in The Mother, streaming this Friday. 1966 was a good year to be a child watching TV. It was the premiere year of "Star Trek," of course, and little kids could easily fall in love with Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and the adventures of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Debuting at about the same time was "The Monkees," a playful riff on "A Hard Days Night" starring the eponymous pre-fab rock group that has always, to my eye, been way more interesting than the Beatles. 1966 was also the year of the fourth season of "The Avengers," the first season to feature Diana Rigg as Emma Peel.
1966 was also the debut of "Batman," one of the best TV shows of all time. Unlike most TV series, "Batman" aired two days a week, with the first half of a cliffhanger airing on Wednesdays, and the conclusion airing on Thursdays. It starred the impeccably funny Adam West and Burt Ward, two...

Must-watch comedy series, eye-opening documentaries and an expansion of the “Bridgerton” universe are among the noteworthy additions to Netflix this month. May 12 sees the premiere of Jennifer Lopez’s new Netflix original film “The Mother,” in which she plays an assassin lured back in for one last job. And on May 23, the documentary “Victim/Suspect” examines how sexual assault victims too often get turned into suspects when they report their assaults.
“Queen Charlotte,” the “Bridgerton” prequel series, arrives on May 4 while a new season of Tim Robinson’s sketch series “I Think You Should Leave” drops on May 30. And if you missed the most recent season of the niche (but delightful) comedy series “Documentary Now!,” you can stream that on Netflix starting May 9.

Burt Bacharach made unforgettable cameo appearances in the Austin Powers movies. Bacharach is one of the most renowned and influential figures in 20th-century pop music. A pioneer of the “easy listening” subgenre, Bacharach received an impressive number of awards, including six Grammys, three Oscars, and an Emmy. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Bacharach alongside his frequent collaborator Hal David as one of the greatest songwriters of all time. From “This Guy’s in Love with You,” “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head” to “That’s What Friends Are For,” Bacharach wrote dozens of Top 40 hits throughout his prolific career.

After being a box office stable for decades, Arnold Schwarzenegger is finally coming to the world of television. Netflix has released the first trailer for “Fubar,” its upcoming action comedy about a CIA operative who joins his daughter for one final mission. The eight-episode series is set to premiere on the streaming service May 25.
The first few seconds of the “Fubar” trailer make it look like your typical Schwarzenegger movie. Luke (Schwarzenegger) is captured by a group of thugs who seem hellbent on making him pay. Seconds later, he breaks free and makes good on his promise to “kill all of you and then leave.” Back at the CIA, he’s surrounded by adoring co-workers who are happy to celebrate his impending retirement. But all of his happiness fades when Luke learns that his daughter Emma (Monica Barbaro) has followed in his footsteps to join this highly secretive and dangerous world.

Hollywood legend Natalie Wood had a dark prophecy hanging over her head long before her death. A movie star since childhood, Wood was in a series of classics before her life was cut short at 43. But despite a brilliant career, the West Side Story star had a troubling private life. Her mysterious 1981 drowning was even predicted by a psychic, creating a fear of water she never let go of.
Natalie Wood’s mother pushed her into show business
On the surface, Wood’s arrival on the 1940s scene was a triumph. Her first credited screen role (Tomorrow is Forever) put her opposite influential movie magnate Orson Welles. She was only seven at the time.
Following the success of Tomorrow is Forever, Wood landed the role that would cement her status as a child star. Miracle on 34th Street was one of the most popular movies of 1947. It remains one of Wood’s most famous roles.

London, Feb 13 (Ians) Artificial intelligence (AI) is suffering from severe gender imbalance, risking development of discriminatory technology and cinema promotes it as the product of lone male geniuses with God-like complexes, researchers have revealed.
The study by University of Cambridge found that just 8 per cent of all depictions of AI professionals from a century of film are women — and half of these are shown as subordinate to men.
Researchers said that such cultural tropes and a lack of female representation affects career aspirations and sector recruitment.
Without enough women building AI, there is a high risk of gender bias seeping into the algorithms set to define the future, they said in a paper published in the journal Public Understanding of Science.
The team whittled down over 1,400 films to the 142 most influential cinematic works featuring AI between 1920 and 2020, and identified 116 characters they classed as “AI professionals”.

Burt Bacharach, legendary composer, songwriter, and occasional singer, who was undoubtedly one of the most important composers and commanding music figures of the 20th century, passed away at 94.

I'll let you in on a weird secret: when I was a kid, one of the prettiest songs I'd ever heard didn't come from a classical recording or a popular radio ballad, but from an Austin Powers movie. Specifically, it was Mike Myers' first turn as the Bond-parodying spy in "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" that left me teary, with a surprisingly sweet scene that saw Austin romancing his gal, Vanessa (Elizabeth Hurley), while Burt Bacharach crooned in the background. Bacharach's presence in the Austin Powers films, first playing piano and singing "What the World Needs Now," and later accompanying Elvis Costello in a rendition of "I'll Never Fall in Love Again," was an inexplicable sort of movie magic. The late composer and pianist didn't fit into the otherwise farcical comedy, but he also elevated it into something classic.

Burt Bacharach, who has passed away at 94, was one of the greatest pop songwriters of all time. Period. Point blank. Working with lyricist Hal David, they created some of the most indelible, hummable tunes of the 20th Century, songs you can't believe there was a time when they didn't exist. Some people are lucky to have one song hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Bacharach had six, not to mention 22 more that reached the top 10. In particular, he owned the 1960s. At a time where the idea of popular music was being completely revolutionized, his brand of deceptively simple jazzy pop still shined incredibly bright.
One person who understood the importance of Burt Bacharach to the 1960s was Mike Myers. So, when it came time to make his ode to James Bond and the decade from which he was cinematically birthed, Myers wanted to shine a spotlight on a man responsible...

When the sad news of Burt Bacharach’s death came down Thursday morning, your first memories of the songwriting genius likely depended on your age. If you grew up in the Sixties, you probably remember the hits he wrote with Hal David for artists like Gene Pitney, Dionne Warwick, and B.J. Thomas. Children of the Eighties are likely more familiar with Christoper Cross’ “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do),” Neil Diamond’s “Heartlight,” and the Dionne Warwick charity single “That’s What Friends Are For.”

Burt Bacharach, the massively influential composer of dozens of hits like “Walk on By,” “Do You Know the Way to San Jose,” Alfie,” “I Say a Little Prayer” and “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” died of natural causes Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 94.

Tom Cruise remains on top after all these years. Top Gun: Maverick earned nearly 1.5 billion at the box office, and scored six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. But as great as his recent film work has been, some think most of his links to Scientology. Cruise is synonymous with the controversial religion now, but it was his first wife, Mimi Rogers, who introduced him to the church. The couple eventually divorced, and Rogers left Scientology for good. Like most stories related to the church, the story behind their split is strange and full of unconfirmed rumors.
