...You left Melrose Place to do a movie with Carrot Top!?"

-Norm Macdonald to Courtney Thorne-Smith on the Conan O'Brien show in '97

Really can't sum up how bad this movie is better than that.
  • You know what a good name for it would be? Box office poison.
  • devisional17 September 2021
Yes. Carrot top is in this film. Thanks to Norm Macdonald for a heads up on this one though. Sorry to Courtney Thorne Smith for being on this.
  • I have to admit, the only reason is an interview Courtney Thorne-Smith gave back in '98 on the Conan show (plugging this film) during which she had the misfortune to have Norm MacDonald as the preceding guest. He proceeded to excoriate this film, Carrot Top, and, by implication, the film industry, modern civilization, and the nature of existence itself with admirable aplomb. See here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lL0WayC7jW0

It's funnier than the film. MacDonald is incredible. He actually got me to watch a Carrot Top movie based on his sight-unseen opinion of the film.

Courtney: "It's like 9 1/2 Weeks, but Carrot Top."

Norm: "So, it's like 9 1/2 Seconds?" (long pause) "'Cause he prematurely ejaculated."

    Seriously, watch the interview.
  • Norm called it. This movie was boring and cringey. How did this get then greenlight?
  • The only interesting thing about this movie is that almost everyone who has a speaking role was in an episode of Seinfeld. The plot is that he needs to get the rent money and then they just forget that. He's an inventor who inherits a multi-million dollar manufacturing company and never thinks to make any of his great inventions. Just like in every "comedy", there's the completely useless love story that does nothing but add 20 minutes to an already unbearable movie. This movie is somehow less funny than Carrot Top's stand up comedy which is a miracle. If you want to try to remember all the bit characters from Seinfeld, this could be watchable. If you want to be entertained, run away.

Board spelt bored rip Norm. Box office poison.

The interview on Conan def worth a watch unlike this film.
  • There are many mysteries in life. For example: Why did any of the people other than Carrot Top agree to appear in this movie? Why did anyone distribute this movie? Why did anyone pay money to see it? I guess none of these questions will ever be answered, but one thing I know for sure, this movie is one of the worst ever made with a budget this big. It would already be bad, but the addition of Carrot Top's "humor" makes it even worse. The only entertainment one could possibly get from this movie is to burn it, smash it, or otherwise destroy it in an amusing fashion. If you were to rank it against every movie ever made, it would be right between "Problem Child" and "Biodome". Nuff said.
  • "Chairman of the Board" is a ridiculously stupid film from the popular comic Carrot Top (also seen on the 1-800-COLLECT commercials). He plays a surfing inventor who comes upon a man who has a flat tire. Top helps him out and a few days later discovers the guy's died and has given his company to the comedian. Even if someone else was in Carrot Top's role, it still would have been bad. The jokes (which are constantly rigged throughout) are terrible and the idea of a romantic "plot twist" should have been discarded. DO NOT WATCH!!!
  • Carrot Top is one of those actors who is the epitome of Andy Warhol's assertion that "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes." Clearly, Mr. Top's claim to fame was very, very short-lived and the world's fascination of him expired long ago--probably long before this movie debuted! I think that this film's appearance on the infamous "IMDB Bottom 100" is due to this disaffection with the red-headed 'comic'. In other words, while the film IS bad, it's not as bad as its rating would suggest--and is more a reflection of the world being tired of Mr. Top than anything else. After all, a little bit of his shtick sure goes a long way!

The film is very formulaic and the plot is basically the same as Weird Al's film "UHF"--except that "UHF" is very funny and "Chairman of the Board" is tired and occasionally tedious film. Now that I think about it, the plot is a lot like Steve Martin's "The Jerk"--which was also very, very funny and "Chairman of the Board" is a dull pile of bat droppings.

Mr. Top is an out of work guy who makes crazy and generally useless inventions (wow--that's a radical departure from his stage routine). Despite this, he IS able to make it big because he meets up with a nice old guy (Jack Warden--who deserved better than this) who unknown to Herr Top is the CEO of a multi-million dollar company. When Warden dies, he leaves the company to the Top-Meister. Warden's nephew, Larry Miller (who does not deserve better than this) wants the company himself and decides to work behind Topper's back to ruin the company's stock so he can take over the company. Sadly for Miller, La Zanahoria's crazy inventions work out great--making the company more successful than ever before...but Miller has an evil plan....

As I said above, the basic plot idea, while recycled, is workable. The problem is all the fart jokes, crotch jokes and the fact you see so much of the Carrot that the film is ponderous and rarely charming. The bottom line is that if the leading man had been a bit actor instead of THE film it might have worked...providing the film also had writers who were not chimps. All in all, pretty dopey but watchable...and not nearly as horrible as the really, really bad films of William Grefe, Al Adamson, Ed Wood, Larry Buchanan, Arch Hall, Sr. or Ray Dennis Steckler!! Now these guys really, really, really made bad films--apocalytically bad films!!

By the way, there was one very good thing about the film--seriously. The surfer-inspired music (including a great song from the Ramones) made this a terrific soundtrack--one of the best in recent memory. Really.
  • Well, it's good to see the "comedian" Carrot Top get some recognition, but please, God, why like this???

First off, the dialogue sucks, whoever wrote it should never be able to write again. And why did they have to incorporate Carrot Tops "inventions"? I can see the way they are going with it, but did Jim Carrey do impressions in his role in Peggy Sue Got Married...

Bottom Line: This movie is horrible, it's a good thing I worked at a video store and got to rent it for free, or I would have wasted 3.49...

Chairman of the Board is probably the most underrated comedy of 1998. Although the plot is rather thin, it allows Carrot Top's comedic genius to shine through. This movie is a remarkable translation of his prop comedy and an uproarious performance by Larry Miller should keep Carrot Top's most outspoken detractors satisfied. Admittedly I was skeptical at first, and my expectations were low when I originally sat to watch the movie. Within minutes I was unable to turn the channel, as I was entranced by the wit and imagination of Carrot Top. Carrot Top's acting performance was adequate, but it will not be confused for Oscar caliber. Be that as it may, you have to take the movie for what it is, and enjoy it for what it is.
  • More like, Chairman of the Board but spelled B-O-R-E-D -Norm Macdonald

The humor is non-existent in this loser of a movie. Carrot Top plays a surfer dude inventor who consistently blows the rent money on his goofy, useless inventions. Then he helps an old guy broken down by the side of the road, and voila, he's inherited a major corporation. And on and on and on past the jealous relatives, humanizing the corporation, hostile takeovers, the obligatory love interest.. aargh...let's just say this movie is virtually unwatchable. What Carrot Top has accomplished is to convince me never to go to his stage shows.
  • It's tempting to call CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD "Pee-Wee Herman IS The Hudsucker Proxy," but that would be a terrible insult to both Mr. Reubens and the Coen Bros. In any case, can we please enact a moratorium on idiocy? Carrot Top is...a surfer dude who strikes up a brief friendship with tycoon Jack Warden. When the old fart dies, Mr. Top is left the (cue title) of his huge invention corporation. But fart's nephew wants the seat at the head of the table, and he'll become the boss if the company stock drops too far. (Did Joel and Ethan settle out of court, or were they paid off while this movie was being filmed?)

Despite some nifty doo-dads and an amusing moment or two, CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD does a) star a prop comic with a screechy voice who's now relegated to cheap AT&T TV spots, and b) contain jokes that seem to have been written during the first Bush administration. It's a movie solely for C.T. fans (both of them). Nobody else should bother.

    So, who's next, Gallagher?

(Note: I was given a promotional soundtrack when this movie came out, and the CD has never been read by the laser in my boombox. It's made a nice dust collector over the years, and aside from a Ramones track that's available on countless other discs, I've never heard of the bands featured on it. Sprung Monkey? Hillbilly Soul Surfers? Do these names give you an idea of the intelligence level offered here?)
  • Yes, the votes are in. This film may very well be the Plan 9 From Outer Space for our generation. But whereas Ed Wood's film, for all its flaws, retains a certain charm despite it all, this film defines the word "charmless" to the nth degree. In fact, I'd suggest to the editors of the Oxford English Dictionary to cite this movie as a key example defining the that word in the next update to the dictionary.

Carrot Top is a performer of such abysmal ability that normally rational people that I know once they hear his name become homicidal maniacs dedicated to wanting to kill Mr. Top as soon as possible. Indeed, if one goes to Amazon.com and look at customer reviews for Carrot Top's movie and other performance DVD, one will find several that could be construed as death threats to Mr. Top.

One other curious fact about this film, I recall that Mike Nelson, the head writer for MST 3000, in his book Mike's Mega Cheese about movies, good and bad, said he saw this film and shortly afterwords couldn't recall a thing about it, including the title. Obviously Mike was suffering a classic reaction to trauma. Viewing this atrocity was so soul numbing, Mike Nelson had to block it from his mind. (Evidently, in a later chapter in his book, Mike Nelson had recovered his memeory of this film. From the review he offers, Mike Nelson was definitely not grateful for the recovered memory.)

The only comment I offer about the film, and it is not a spoiler, it's simply God's honest truth, it's not funny. None of it is, not even a nanosecond of it is funny.

My friend and I were in the local used book/movie store and we came across Chairman of the Board, knowing us we thought it would be a fun idea to get it and watch it to try and poke fun at carrot top and the rest of the crew. We were horribly wrong. Once opening the box containing the film the ambiance of the room changed to a dark and gloomy atmosphere, then we made the worse decision of our lives and put it in the DVD player. I have never once in my life felt such anger towards a film and those who were apart of making it. There is a special seat in hell for those who participated in making this movie, if you can even call it that! If I could have one with it would be to get those 95min of my life back that Carrot Top robbed from me. Please, for the sake and health of others if you find a copy of chairman of the board do the following instructions A.)Once finding it, pick it up with latex gloves. DO NOT LET IT TOUCH YOUR SKIN B.)Go deep into your local forest or desert and pour gasoline all over it and throw a lite match or lighter on it C.) Once burnt dig a hole as deep as you can and bury it

The fate of cinema and of the future lives of others is in our hands to abolish the world of this film. God speed my fellow IMDb users......God speed.
  • Warning: Spoilers
After establishing himself in the early 1990s as America's premier prop comic, Scott Thompson AKA "Carrot Top" made the jump to feature film with 1998's Chairman of the Board with horrible results. Directed by Alex Zamm, this film was so poorly received by both critics and audiences that still frequents IMDb's Bottom 100 to this day. Is all that, hate, warder toward the film, really deserved? Yeah, it does, but this movie isn't the worst film ever; after all, there are far worst comedians out there, with far more horrible comedies. Still, the movie is pretty bad, once you seem it. Carrot Top stars as Edison, a failed inventor and surfer dude who became the head of a major invention company, Macmillan Industries when a dying CEO, Armand Macmillan (Jack Warden) choose him, over his nephew, Bradford McMillan (Larry Miller), due to his penchant for inventing things. Due to this betrayal from his uncle, Bradford set up a sinister plan to hustle the company out of Edison's hands, and sell, the company for millions of dollars. Without spoiling the movie, too much, I have to say, a lot of people were a little too hard on Carrot Top in this movie. Yes, he's very annoying with his clumsy, slapstick self-deprecating humor and stupid prop puns; but at least, his character was somewhat likable with his quirk-like attitude and charming demeanor. Still, I kinda glad, this was Carrot Top's first and only starring role. Thompson has purposely stayed away from Hollywood after the dismal failure of Chairman of the Board and with the exception of stand-up appearances and popping up in wacky cameos on late night shows and web videos, has largely resisted that part of show business. I think, his limited talent is better suited for his stand up gag in Las Vegas than here. I do like the way, he delivered some jokes with whirling dervish of excitement and enthusiasm. I just don't think, he has the film presence to make audiences watch this movie, even if he wanted to. Even with the fact that this movie came out, during the height of the spokesman in commercials for 1-800-CALL-ATT fame, it was no surprised, to hear at the time, that this film drew less than $200,000 at the box office, nor has aged well, since then. Just think, if this movie was made with today's Carrot Top, with his oddly shape muscle fuel body, and his ugly plastic surgery old face, recycling old jokes. It would be tiresome and ugly-looking. Now, that would be, totally unwatchable. I think, the biggest reason, why this movie fail to gain, an audience is the fact, that it's not that funny. If they did, it were a little too childish or cartoony for my taste. If anything, Larry Miller's performance as Bradford McMillian kinda save this film, from being placed in a 1/10 rating from me. I always love his over-the-top nastiness stereotypical typecast roles in comedy movies. In my opinion, he's was great in 1996's 'The Nutty Professor' & 1999's '10 Things I Hate About You' and he's alright, on here, as well. Meanwhile, Courtney Thorne-Smith of TV Show 'Melrose Place" (1992-1999) fame does somewhat work as supporting character, Natalie Stockwell, the Vice President and overseer of production. However, I really didn't find the whole love-interest and chemistry between her and Carrot Top's character, believable. It was bit frustrating to see how 1990 clichés; her character was, with her, falling in love with the main character, despite having little to no interested. One character, I really could do, without is Raquel Welch as heiress, Grace Kosik. I don't her, constant repetitive appearance and disappearance, throughout the film. It really got so annoying toward the end. Another thing that bug me about this movie is the weird camera shots. All the extreme close up, canted, worm eye, and bird eyes didn't work. It was really distracting to the point, that it made the movie, far worse than it's originally had. Overall: It seems that no matter what Scott Thompson does, he can't quite get the level of respect that he desires, whether as a physical specimen or as a comedian. In his defense, I have to say, Carrot Top isn't the worst thing, ever. Despite what I think about his movie, though, Carrot Top is a great entertainer and no one attains that level of success without having some comedic chops. So props for that. Just don't make movies.
  • This movie is stupid. There's no getting around it. But so is Dumb and Dumber. Mind you, Dumb and Dumber is significantly more funny than this. However, I for one love seeing stupid movies (Tail Sting) and laughing with a group of good friends over how bad it is. Call me callous, but see this movie, and you'll find that the only way you can laugh at it is if you laugh at it instead of with it.
  • Masterpiece. Carrot Top blows the screen away. Never has one movie captured the essence of the human spirit quite like "Chairman of the Board." 10/10... don't miss this instant classic.
  • This is without a doubt the most poorly thought out movie in history. The invention gags by Carrot Top are some of the most awful attempts to be funny in recorded history. I am not familiar with his other work, but if it is half as bad as this then I am just going to cry. I give this movie 1 out of 30 billion stars, and may God have mercy on the souls of those responsible.
  • Carrot Top's "Chairman of the Board" and his AT&T commercials are living proof that fly-blown fecal matter is available in the color orange. Not FREELY available, however, as HBO charges for such garbage. Blehhh! The saving grace of COTB is that it surely fills suicide hot-lines across the country, perhaps providing employment for thousands of telephone therapists who lost their jobs when recovered memory treatment was discredited, although (sadly) Carrot Top probably contributes to his sponsor AT&T's bottom line with the increased phone traffic from devastated HBO viewers. I can visualize the hordes of traumatized TV viewers, phone in one hand and fully loaded .45 auto in the other hand, dialing out of last-minute desperation before walking off the plank of life to escape the specter of COTB's orange-haired monster echoing in their synapses like the agony of searing, irreversible meningeal swelling.
  • I really enjoyed this Carrot Top vehicle. Having seen him on TV and his stand up show in Las Vegas, I thought this film was the perfect vehicle for his outrageous behavior and wacky props. I wasn't expecting Lawrence Of Arabia, so for me and my friends, it was a fun, breezy flick with quite a few laughs.
  • Up until a while ago, CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD (Carrot Top's only leading man movie) was in the Bottom 100. Its score on IMDB is an appalling 2,2 but why is not in the list anymore? Since July 2018 the new standards require 10,000 ratings for the movies to be included, and CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD has to this day 6,324 ratings, meaning that if it will ever make the list again it would be at #9 in the list. So why did I watch it? Well, I occasionally watch bad movies because some are unintentionally funny. So, it's CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD that bad as its rating and reviews might say? No. Now it's not a good movie, but still funny in spots.

When the movie begins we are introduced to Edison (Carrot Top), a slacker surfer and part-time inventor that lives in his home by the sea with his two surfer buddies. One day, unfortunately, the land lady comes by asking the rent and since Edison's inventions are not liked by anyone and he can't keep a job for more than 15 seconds, they are in big trouble. Thankfully one day Edison stumbles across Armand McMillan (Jack Warden), an old man and CEO that has the car repaired by Edison. In a bizarre plot twist, before Armand dies, he says in his recorded will that Edison is the new CEO of its company, leaving his nephew Bradford (Larry Miller) only his surfboard. Then, since Bradford wants to take over on the company, he has an evil plan. But Edison, helped by his buddies will save the company and just like in many other similar movies of the 1990s he'll get the girl of his dreams.

So it's the movie that bad? No. Carrot Top is funny in some moments and I also liked the various cameos by Warden, Glenn Shadix, Shaquille O'Neal after KAZAAM and STEEL, and Larry Miller played a great villain.

In some ways, the movie comes off with a blending of the live action FLINTSTONES movie (with Carrot Top that becomes the chief of a big company and the villain that tries to ruin him with an evil scheme) and THE JERK, as Carrot Top lives on a beach side and then he moves in the big town, and his naivety is mostly his best friend.

The bottom line is that the movie isn't great but funny and if you don't think too much, you might get a kick out of it. And trust me, there are much worse comedies that have always been in the Bottom 100 and deserve it: BABY GENIUSES (1 and 2), SON OF THE MASK, DISASTER MOVIE, GOING OVERBOARD, EPIC MOVIE, JACK & JILL, ED, LEONARD PART 6 and SANTA WITH MUSCLES!!!. Don't be afraid to buck conventional wisdom as I think this film is enjoyable and a decent one to watch with your friends who know and love 1990s comedies.
  • Is this a bad movie? Don't take my word for it. Consider the following press reports of people who tried to watch this movie:

    · While he was watching this movie, the brain of Mr. Harold Faber of Sandusky, Ohio, forcibly ejected itself from his skull at over 200 kph and preceded to squirm across the floor shrieking NOOOO NOOO NOOOO.

    · Mrs. Louise Robbins of Enid, Oklahoma, a 69-year-old retired homemaker, committed ritual seppuko with a butter knife while watching this movie.

    · Ms. Janine Hosmer of Columbia, South Carolina, gave birth to a severely deformed baby while watching this movie, although she had not been pregnant.

    · While watching this movie together, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Wells of San Franciso, California, spontaneously exploded with such force that Mr. Wells's left tibia was later found embedded in the wall of a house in Marin County.

There have been many similar incidents.

Of those who did not suffers more serious effects such as those detailed above, at least 75% became incurably, violently, and understandably insane after viewing this movie. Of the remaining 25%, most had already been insane before viewing the movie; the remainder were either blind and/or and deaf or in a persistent vegetative state.

I'm not saying don't rent it, if you want to. I'm just reporting what was in the papers.
