Dr. Ellie Arroway, after years of searching, finds conclusive radio proof of extraterrestrial intelligence, sending plans for a mysterious machine.
Producer and director Robert Zemeckis asked Jodie Foster to repeat the pod scene six times, each time with a different expression (like intense joy, fear, and sadness), and the visual effects crew quickly morphed her face from one take to the next. They also briefly used the face of Dr. Arroway as a child.
CQ, this is W9GFO. CQ, this is W9GFO here. Come back?
At the start of the film, young Ellie operates amateur radio station W9GFO. Her operating procedure and dialog sound more like CB radio than amateur radio. The term "come back", inviting a listening station to reply, is not used in ham parlance. She should have said "over", "go ahead" or "go". If she used VOX (voice operated control) she would only need to stop talking, and the transmitter would automatically switch from transmit to receive, allowing her to hear the other station.
