Spectacular scenes with a fantastic creature attacking human preys

The film starts in Sarawak , a province of North of Borneo where an idealistic doctor named Ash (Mark Dacascos of Double dragon). He mistakenly reveals his DNA theories to an evil scientific (Jurgen Prochnow , Das Boat) who utilizes on illegal genetic experiments , blending beetle and alien DNA . As a nasty scientist's DNA experiment on the bones of a mysterious jungle creature brings the carnivorous beast to life . Two years later , there appear various bodies dead and wounded ; one mutant , a giant insect-like specie with super powers , lurks in the lush forest from into perilous jungles , waiting for prey . The weird creature begins attacking one by one . Meantime , Ash along with a beautiful doctor( Robin McKee) are surrounded and both of whom set out to track it down.

This is a semi-remake to ¨Predator¨, told in terms of jungle warfare with an over seven-foot-tall monster on the loose . It's a brutal , exciting and violent Sci-Fi thriller with gory action and little logic . So we ought sit through the creature dispatch enemies one by one before the ending showdown comes , leaving the utter mechanics of the thing to keep our interest buzzing . The final confrontation is particularly exciting stuff , even though it makes no great sense . The result is thoroughly unpleasant but undeniably thrilling action movie . Acceptable special effects and special make-up by , nowadays famous , : Robert Kurtzman , Greg Nicotero , Howard Berger . Adequate cinematography by Gerry Lively and nice musical score fitting to action by Christopher Stone . The motion picture was regularly directed by William Mesa , he's usually visual effects supervisor (Dark Water , Deep blue sea) and occasionally cinema director . Rating : Passable and entertaining.

A very "Alien" like creature in a very "Predator" like movie

The story takes place in province of Sarawak in the island of Borneo Malaysia, and the scenery is beautiful.

An alien creature called Balakai's DNA gets used to create an alien clone that goes in a rampage killing people at random in the jungles of Borneo.

The script is the worst part of this movie. There's lot of scene changes that doesn't blend smoothly, and a plot that doesn't make sense at times. As many people have pointed out, there are the blatant rip off of scenes from the movie Predator.

Everything else about the movie is pretty good (for a B movie that is). Acting is pretty good, special effect is okay, and there's some decent action, and a story that's reasonably compelling.

So it was a good movie to watch and provided good 2 hours of entertainment.

    Decent

When I got about one hour into the film I noticed something. THIS IS EXACTLY LIKE PREDATOR! These people basicly lifted scenes right out of predator. i.e. the monster is invisible, the hero makes traps and then waits on a tree, the monster has heat seeking vision and the monster looks a lot like the predator. This film had a good creature costume and some good cgi for the it too. But near the end when the helicopter crashes, the effects are probably the worst you have ever seen. Rent it if you want a good laugh. But rent Predator first.

Rated 14A for some violence and some language (Canadian rating)

    14A is like a PG-13 rating in the U.S.A.

    Predator, anyone?

I thought the first half of this movie was bad - there's a monster that's created by combining an ancient skeleton with the DNA of beetles, or maybe it's a space alien? Both explanations are given. A mad scientist (Jurgen Prochnow) has created this thing as a military weapon (oh yeah, the old completely uncontrollable monster as a weapon gag). A CIA agent and a local doctor / scientist / jungle guide / warrior guy try to stop them. There's just one plot hole after another. At one point the multi-tasking guy and the CIA agent are locked up in a drainage pipe, but escape simply by going to the next exit. They put a guy in a cage to act as bait for the monster, but there are people running around all over the place. Why would they assume the monster would go after the guy in the cage? And on and on.

But the second half of this movie is just a really cheap Predator rip off, scene-by-scene. You get two people laying motionless on a beach, and a monster's-eye view of them - he can't see them because, well, he's 99% blind I guess. The Predator couldn't see Schwarzenegger because he was covered in mud which masked his infra-red signature, but these folks aren't covered in mud. Apparently the creature saw Predator and realized that he shouldn't be able to see them. Then there's the scene where the Indian takes off his shirt and rubs something across his chest, preparing to do battle. And the scene where a big piece of tree trunk is hoisted into the air for a trap. Just for variety, they throw in a scene where a helicopter crashes behind our "good" characters and rolls towards them as they run away, very reminiscent of Aliens. Except the scene in this movie is comically bad. I don't see how anyone could watch it without laughing out loud at that special effect. There's also a drawn out death scene that drags everything to a complete halt just when it had finally started moving.

Anyway, this movie has nothing to recommend it. Prochnow's evil scientist character is really the only one that's developed to any degree, and of course, he's the one we're not supposed to like.

A B-grade rip-off of far superior genre pictures.

    * 1/2 out of ****

Off the top of my head, I cannot recall a movie that is so blatant in its bid to steal ideas and scenes from other motion pictures. With DNA, I see each of the three Indiana Jones films, Jurassic Park, Alien, and especially Predator during the climactic sequence, which is a virtual re-make of the John Mctiernan classic. Taking ideas from other films is harmless, but almost re-creating scenes entirely is usually unforgiveable.

Mark Dacascos stars as Ash, a doctor in Sarawak who's having trouble treating the sick with his understaffed and undersupplied clinic. Along comes Dr. Wessinger (Jurgen Prochnow), who claims to have the knowledge to cure millions of sick people, the source being a specific kind of beetle in the jungle. But once they head out, Wessinger steals the beetles, attempts to kill Ash, and uses the DNA from a fossil to create the "perfect killing machine." Unsurprisingly, it's up to Ash and a female CIA agent (Robin Mckee) to stop the beast.

DNA is a bad movie, but it's certainly not unbearable. The acting is actually quite decent, some of the special effects aren't half-bad, and the locations and sets are rather convincing. Dacascos makes for a dashing hero and Robin Mckee is a very attractive woman who looks alluring trudging through the jungle (she gets a frustratingly brief bra and panties shot).

But in the end, any quality emphasized in the film is for naught. DNA is pure schlock, ripping off a movie every five minutes to pass its running time. The Predator parallels at the end are hilarious: Dacascos sets up almost identical traps and even makes a huge leap into a river to escape the creature. DNA also features what has to be the worst helicopter crash I've seen on film, period, a scene so hilariously awful, you're guaranteed to rewind the scene and see it again.
