If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.
Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

22 months ago, we caught word that an “edge-of-your-seat survival thriller” starring Jennifer Hudson of Respect and Dreamgirls and Milla Jovovich of The Fifth Element and Resident Evil was about to head into production – and now we finally know when we’re going to have a chance to see the movie, which is titled Breathe. It will be getting a theatrical, digital, and on demand release on April 26th, and with that date just one month away, a trailer has made its way online. You can check it out in the embed above.
Directed by Stefon Bristol, who won a Film Independent Spirit Award for his 2017 short film See You Yesterday, from a Black List screenplay by Doug Simon, Breathe follows a mother named Maya and her daughter, who are forced to live underground after Earth is made uninhabitable due to a lack of oxygen. Gary Oldman has, for five decades, been one of the greatest performers in the film industry, and comfortably holds the distinction of being one of the greatest actors of all time. Known for his immersive roles -- which often require make-up and prosthetics -- in some brilliant films, Oldman has demonstrated an impressive range rivaled by few. Whether he's playing the role of a cartoonish villain or a nuanced political figure, he has shown he can take on just about any persona.
Gary Oldman's career spans various genres, characters, and personalities, and has helped make the actor arguably the most talented of his generation. The icon has appeared in everything from big-budget franchises to smaller projects, and his roles can range from primary antagonist to a short cameo. Oldman's presence is a gift to the films in which he appears, and he's almost always the most captivating person in any scene in which he acts.

It is a testament to his acting ability that it was years before I realized that Gary Oldman is British. With an ability to nail accents, the dedication to drastically change his appearance and the talent to convey the full spectrum of emotions, Oldman is one of the most eclectic and underrated actors of our time.
Born March 21, 1958, in London, Oldman began his acting career on the British stage in 1979, and made his film debut in “Remembrance” in 1982. In 1984, he reluctantly accepted the role of punk rocker Sid Vicious in “Sid and Nancy,” a performance which garnered him critical acclaim and launched a diverse and successful career that has spanned almost four decades, and includes everything from small indie films to blockbuster franchises.

Actor Austin Butler explains how he looked up to Gary Oldman and Heath Ledger as his main motivation for his Dune: Part Two role.
Critics have yet to decide if Denis Villeneuve's films were truly faithful to the Frank Herbert novel, but all agree the films held their own against previous adaptations. Much like 2021's Dune, the sequel took its time to immerse audiences in places and characters Villeneuve considered essential to the lore. This made for an effective shift in tone when Austin Butler's Feyd-Rautha was suddenly introduced an hour into the film, just as audiences were warming up to Paul Atreides' (played by Timothée Chalamet) trials with the Fremen in Arrakis. Butler's performance as one of Dune: Part Two's main antagonists was simultaneously praised and despised by audiences. And, the actor told NME that he credits two other actors for his role.

This article contains Star Wars and Dune spoilers.
When Frank Herbert published “Dune World,” the first part of what would become the novel Dune in Analog Science Fiction and Fact in 1963, it was a moment that would reverberate through science fiction for decades to come, especially on the big screen, where the story’s influence can still be felt to this day. In fact, you can easily track how Herbert’s creation led to some of the biggest blockbuster franchises of all time.
If you’ve watched the excellent documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune, you know how the story goes. Alejandro Jodorowsky, the avant-garde filmmaker behind El Topo and The Holy Mountain, tried to adapt Herbert’s book in the ’70s, and while that movie never got made, many of its ideas and designs would later make their way into other sci-fi films through the legendary storyboard the filmmaker sent to Hollywood studios while pitching his movie.

The 1990s were full of top-notch science fiction films that won over critics and set the box office on fire -- after all, we're talking about a decade that produced "Independence Day" (which beat "Mars Attacks!" to theaters), "The Matrix" (albeit with some complex behind-the-scenes activity), "The Fifth Element" (ripping off Plato to great effect) and the list goes on and on. But not every sci-fi release can be a winner, and the decade also had its fair share of stinkers. Whether they were derivative of other (better) films, hacked to pieces as a result of studio interference, or let down by the limitations of 1990s technology, there are endless reasons why an ambitious science-fiction project might crash and burn.
However, many of these ambitious but panned sci-fi movies are often not without their redeeming factors, and despite their negative reception -- especially on Rotten Tomatoes -- you can often...

While the Marvel Universe continues to chug along and James Gunn attempts to resuscitate the DC universe into something worth watching, we will yet again go back to the world of graphic novels for our inspiration on book vs movie. It’s really a very untapped realm as there are so many good horror comics out there, many without adaptations yet. The ones that have been adapted are very fun and interesting. Today is the mostly forgotten early 2000s movie From Hell (watch it Here), which is based on the stunning and epic graphic novel from famed wizard and all-around cranky dude Alan Moore. Like many graphic novels, the journey to page and then screen was a long and arduous one. It is based on the very real killings in Whitechapel that were later attributed to Jack the Ripper. While both have a lot of truths to them along with...

Dracula will never die — at least as long as Hollywood has anything to say about it. According to Variety, director Luc Besson is helming a new "Dracula" film starring Christoph Waltz ("Inglourious Basterds") and Caleb Landry Jones (who last starred in Besson's "Dogman).
Besson's "Dracula" joins a crowded pack. 2023 saw the release of "Renfield," an action-comedy featuring Nicolas Cage as Dracula but focusing on Nicholas Hoult as the Count's undead assistant. Another film, released only a few months later, stuck more closely to the Lord of Vampires' horror roots: "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" adapted the chapter of Bram Stoker's original novel where Dracula sails to London in a coffin and murders the ship's crew. That film's Dracula (Javier Botet) was a batlike demon, a far cry from the affable Cage.

Countless different types of Count Dracula stories have been told on the screen over the years, from Bela Lugosi’s black & white icon to Nicolas Cage’s scenery chewing take in Renfield.
The origin story of the Dracula character has also been told, most notably in Gary Shore’s 2014 movie Dracula Untold. And THR reports this week that it’s about to be told again.
Caleb Landry Jones (Antiviral) will star in an untitled Dracula origin story for director Luc Besson (The Fifth Element), which is said to be a “big budgeted film.”
The Hollywood Reporter previews that the movie will be a “retelling of Bram Stoker’s classic Gothic tale with Landry-Jones set to play the Transylvania Count-turned-vampire.”
The site also notes, “Besson’s take will focus on the beginning of Dracula’s life and relationship with his wife.”
Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) is also in talks to star.

Middle East distributor Front Row Filmed Entertainment is gearing up to theatrically release iconic Oscar-nominated Rio de Janeiro gangland drama City of God across the Gulf countries of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates for the first time.
Co-directed by Brazilian directors Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund, the movie made waves back in 2002 for its realistic depiction of the rise of gang violence in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro with a young unprofessional cast.
At the time, Dubai-based Front Row originally released the film straight to DVD in the Gulf due to a variety of local restrictions but some two decades later it has set a theatrical re-release in a sign of how the region is opening up.
The planned February 22 Gulf launch coincides with the 21st anniversary of the movie’s 2003 theatrical release following its Out of Competition world premiere at Cannes in...

When we recently compiled our list of science fiction movies based on true stories, one film that didn’t make the list was Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer. After all, the technology behind the nuclear bomb can no longer be said to be undiscovered, sadly. Nonetheless, Oppenheimer remains the archetypal science fiction story—one about a mad scientist who devises a new machine that changes the world through terrible unforeseen consequences. He is an an American Prometheus, yes, but also a regular Yankee Frankenstein. More than that though, by ushering in the nuclear age, Oppenheimer may have lit the fuse on the genre of cinematic science fiction.

Maureen “Mo” Henry, the veteran negative cutter and a giant in the postproduction community, died Sunday of complications from liver failure in Los Angeles, her son, Logan, told The Hollywood Reporter. She was 67.
During her half-century in Hollywood, Henry cut negatives on hundreds of films, starting with Jaws (1975). She followed with such movies as Ghost (1990), Heat (1995), Casino (1995), Before Sunrise (1995), From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), The Fifth Element (1997), Starship Troopers (1997), The Big Lebowski (1998), The Iron Giant (1999), The Sixth Sense (1999), My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002), Million Dollar Baby (2004), Babel (2006), The Blind Side (2009) and Intersteller (2014) and entries in the Matrix, Dark Knight, Shrek and Spider-Man franchises.
Hers was a family business, she explained in a 2020 interview for the Chicago Film Society.

The episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw covering Gothika was Written and Edited by Paul Bookstaber, Narrated by Kier Gomes, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Back in the late 90’s, early 2000s the horror genre was in that weird phase of encapsulating what it truly wanted to be. Hot off the heels of Scream, horror movies focused much more on the teenage angst, and lifestyle. But there comes a time when some hidden gems make their way to the silver screen that branch off the beaten path with a more adult-themed tale, drenched in psychological/mental horror. What if one day you’re living your average life, working your 9-5, and suddenly black, out only to wake up, institutionalized and accused of committing a crime you can’t seem to remember doing? Gary Oldman's controversial comments in a 2014 interview sparked outrage, but he quickly apologized for his remarks. Oldman starred as Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg in The Fifth Element as a favor to director Luc Besson. While Oldman may not be a fan of his own performance in Sid and Nancy, both films remain cult classics.
Out of the many characters Gary Oldman has played in his career, Zorg from The Fifth Element may be one of the most memorable. Gary Oldman's long and vaunted movie career has earned him three Academy Award nominations with one win, one Emmy nomination, and three Golden Globe nominations with one win. A true chameleon, Oldman disappears into his roles, sometimes putting on a heavy disguise and transforming into a real person like in Darkest Hour, and sometimes just changing his movements and voice like in Léon: The Professional. Gary Oldman considers his performance as Sirius Black in Harry Potter to be "mediocre". Oldman believes his performance could have been better if he had read J.K. Rowling's source material more quickly. Despite Oldman's self-criticism, audiences appreciated his portrayal of the complex character, making Sirius Black a memorable highlight of the Harry Potter films.
Gary Oldman thinks his performance as Sirius Black in Harry Potter was "mediocre." The English actor first appeared as Harry Potter's infamous godfather Sirius Black in 2004’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He reprised the role for two additional films before his character met a tragic demise in 2007's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Though Oldman's performance as Sirius Black was generally well-received by both critics and audiences, the actor apparently isn't happy with his own performance.

Writer-director Luc Besson’s Dogman will arrive in U.S. cinemas this spring, Briarcliff Entertainment announced Tuesday.
The dark thriller, starring Caleb Landry Jones, will open in select cinemas on March 15 and then expands on March 22.
Dogman is the embattled filmmaker’s first movie to arrive in theaters after he was cleared of rape charges by a French court last summer, weeks before Besson’s new film made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. And it’s also his first directorial effort since 2019’s Anna.
Briarcliff, an indie distributor, picked up U.S. rights to the movie following its debut at Venice, where it was a major curiosity factor. The drama stars Jones as a tortured young man who finds salvation through the love of his dogs.
Besson has rebuked the notion that the movie is his comeback. “It’s really hard when you get to 60, because you...

Bruce Willis' last movie, Paradise City, was supposed to be a classic action role that showcased his strengths, but it ultimately fell short of expectations. The reunion between Willis and co-star John Travolta in Paradise City was highly anticipated and served as a tribute to their previous collaboration in Pulp Fiction. While Paradise City received negative reviews, it did not impact Bruce Willis' legendary status as an iconic actor with a long list of successful films throughout his career.
After over 40 years of making movies, Bruce Willis has announced his retirement ending his career with what should've been a perfect final film, but Bruce Willis' last movie was anything but. Landing his first part in 1980, Willis has appeared on screens big and small nearly 150 times, has seven films released in 2022, and three more in post-production. Luc Besson's "The Fifth Element" certainly has one of the most eclectic casts of any '90s blockbuster. On one hand, you have a variety of established actors. Then-beloved action hero Bruce Willis was the film's centerpiece, propped by British thespians like Gary Oldman and Ian Holm, both of whom had garnered recognition in major Hollywood blockbusters. On the other hand, you have a variety of unknown variables: Milla Jovovich, a young Russian model just getting her start on film; Chris Tucker, a hyperactive comedian slowly on the rise after "Friday," which also just so happened to feature "Fifth Element" co-star Tommy "Tiny" Lister Jr., an actor-turned-wrestler-turned-actor-again. Besson's call sheet of obscure talents goes on and on. However, it is exactly the director's ethno-galactically diverse, if often aesthetically disparate, vision for the film that makes the cast of "The Fifth Element" fit surprisingly well together.

Veterans of the computer graphics industry are expressing shock and sadness over the death of Daniel Langlois, the influential founder of pioneering 3D computer graphics software developer Softimage, whose tools were used to create visual effects on countless notable films — among them, Jurassic Park, The Matrix, Men in Black, The Fifth Element and Titanic — during a period of rapid development in this field.
The CBC reports that on Dec. 6, two men, Jonathan Lehrer and Robert Snyder, were charged in a Dominica, West Indies court with the murder of Langlois and his partner, Dominique Marchand. According to the CBC story, their bodies were discovered in a burnt-out car Friday near their Coulibri Ridge resort on the island. The CBC also reported that Lehrer owned property next to the resort and had been involved in a past dispute over a road.

District 9 was a critically acclaimed and successful sci-fi movie that deserves a sequel, but the director's other projects have delayed its production. Elysium, another film by the same director, also received praise for its social commentary and action, but a sequel hasn't happened yet. The Fifth Element, despite being a sci-fi classic, never had plans for a sequel as the director preferred to focus on new projects.
Science fiction is one of Hollywood's biggest markets, with many sci-fi films branching into sequels and franchises. However, many great sci-fi movies deserved sequels and never got them for one reason or another. The sci-fi genre encompasses various material, from space operas like Dune and Star Wars to dystopian franchises like The Hunger Games to space adventure movies like Interstellar or 2001: A Space Odyssey. These films take the viewer into worlds that are fantastical but also seem like possible future realities.

Every year, dozens of science-fiction films hit theaters but only a few feature enough intelligence and power to leave a mark. The best ones challenge our minds with captivating ideas and cause us to rethink the world and our place in it. Think Steven Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey," or John Carpenter's "The Thing," all drastically different tales with unique perspectives on the universe. Or, for a little more fun, hit up Spielberg's "E.T.," George Lucas' "Star Wars," or Luc Besson's "The Fifth Element," then explore the darker nature of life with Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" and Andrew Niccol's "Gattaca."
The point is that science fiction caters to all crowds—even those needing a good twist. Luckily, the genre features several pictures designed to make heads explode with stunning third-hour revelations. Often, these plot...

Sometimes villains in movies can be forgettable or inconsequential, and it doesn't affect the overall enjoyment or engagement with the film. Villains with little screen time, who are easily overpowered, or lack sincere motivation can fade into the background. Even with a weak or underdeveloped villain, a movie can still be great if the heroes are well-developed, overcome obstacles, and engage the audience.
Villains can make or break a movie, but sometimes, they end up so forgettable or inconsequential that it doesn't really get in the way. Action films that have clearly defined heroes and villains often rely on the dynamics that play out between the two, whether their origins are linked or they have some sort of connection, this relationship tends to be important. For some projects though, the villains and heroes just seem to casually cross paths because of conflicting interests that lead them to each other.

Bruce Willis burst onto the American entertainment scene as the glib, smart-alecky detective David Addison Jr. opposite Cybill Shepherd’s Maddie Haynes in ABC’s Moonlighting, a show that helped launch the dramedy genre. Willis was not long for the small screen, though, with his his sharp tongue and sarcastic wit destined for bigger things.
More than 90 films and $5.3 billion later, Willis has played a smart-aleck New York detective in the Die Hard series, a smart-aleck oil driller-turned-astronaut in Armageddon, a smart-aleck cop in The Last Boy Scout, a smart-aleck gangster in Last Man Standing, a smart-aleck soldier in Tears of the Sun … well, you get the picture.
When he wasn’t cracking wise, Willis played many other memorable roles in films that included The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990), Billy Bathgate (1991), Color of Night (1994), 12 Monkeys (1995), The Fifth Element (1997), The Sixth Sense (1999) The Story of Us (1999), Looper (2012) and Motherless Brooklyn...

The first thing to know about Yorgos Lanthimos' latest film is that it takes a very nifty metaphor for self-actualization, and turns it into a film that wants, more than anything, to drive that point home in as many ways as it possibly can – subtlety be damned.
The film is Poor Things, and stars Emma Stone and her hypnotic, ever-probing gaze. In it, she plays Bella Baxter, but how Bella came to be is not so simple. In a former life, Bella was a woman who took a plunge to her chilly, wet death. Happening upon her corpse, the disfigured Dr. Godwin "God" Baxter (Willem Dafoe) takes it to his lab for experiments. Discovering that this dead woman was pregnant, God removes the baby, and its brain, and plants it in the mother's skull. Reanimated, the daughter has essentially become her own mother. If this were a Mel Brooks film,...
