  • When the script of a suspense movie is written in such a way that you keep on laughing generously alongside enjoying the spellbinding mystery embedded in the story, then the laughs available are nothing but the cherry on the cake. They are to be considered by the audience as the bonus received with a handsome salary by some employee. Gupt (1997) is one such movie only.

Gupt (secret) is the story of Saahil Sinha (Bobby Deol) who is the step-son of Jaisingh Sinha (Raj Babbar), the governor of the state. Saahil's mother (Priya Tendulkar) had married Jaisingh Sinha after the death of her first husband (Saahil's father) and she begot a son (Master Harsh) through her second marriage also. Saahil is a college student and he does not like his step-father at all. In the college, his friend is Sheetal Chaudhary (Manisha Koirala), the daughter of a businessman, Meghnaath Chaudhary (Dalip Tahil). However when he happens to meet his childhood mate, Isha (Kajol) in the college, it does not take much time for love to blossom between them. Isha is the daughter of the secretary to the governor (Paresh Rawal). Since Sheetal is also in love with Saahil, the love-triangle is complete here. But the theme of the movie is not a love-triangle but a murder-mystery. So here comes the twist in the tale.

Jaisingh announces Saahil's matrimonial alliance with Sheetal in Saahil's birthday party inadvertently fuelling Saahil's anger towards him. The same night, Jaisingh gets murdered. Saahil is arrested for his murder and he is awarded long imprisonment by the court. However he breaks jail and escapes through sea-route alongwith two fellow jailbirds in his bid to search for the real murderer and prove his innocence. Sheetal helps him. He meets Isha also. A shrewd and no-nonsense cop, inspector Udham Singh (Om Puri) is assigned the duty to re-arrest him. Locating the murderer of his step-father is by no means easy for Saahil because the suspects are many. The fathers of both his lover-girls, a high profile minister of the state (Prem Chopra), a corrupt labour union leader (Sharat Saxena), a corrupt advocate who had prepared the governor's will (Raza Muraad) etc. had motives to kill the governor. Hence the confusion is great. Further, the personal physician of the governor (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) is also murdered when he was going to tell Saahil something significant regarding the governor's murder. Now Saahil is facing the charge of that second murder also. However Saahil is able to unmask the real murderer and prove his innocence in the end.

Gupt is a gripping murder mystery, no doubt. As said earlier, the high laughter-quotient can be considered as its another USP. There are several characters in the movie who do not leave any stone unturned to make the audience laugh. The first and the foremost among them is Prem Chopra who has played the role of a minister. His reacting upon anything by exclaiming 'Beautiful !' in a peculiar manner tickles the funny bone of the viewer every time. And the last but not the least among them is Om Puri who though plays the role of a no-nonsense and highly efficient cop, has amused the audience with his mannerisms. The other ones contributing to the audience' laughs are Raza Muraad who utters funny SHERs (Urdu couplets), Harish Patel who always laughs (at the minister), Sadashiv Amrapurkar and Ashok Saraf who play the sidekicks of the investigating officer, i.e., Om Puri, Dinesh Hingu who plays the servant of the advocate, i.e., Raza Muraad etc. Thus the mystery becomes spicy.

Gupt has its share of flaws too. There are many weaknesses in the script. The governor has been portrayed as if he were the President of the United States of America. Nowhere in India, does a governor enjoy that much powers and profile. Instead of showing any chief minister or council of ministers, just one minister has been shown throughout the movie interacting with the governor and others. The governor must be governing some state but he talks as if he is governing the whole nation. Besides, there is no security at his official residence which is completely indigestible. The hero keeps a locket of the murderer (found in the fist of the victim) with him till the climax of the movie without making any serious attempt to open it and know something about the murderer whom it must be belonging to. The director has kept too many songs in the movie making it unnecessarily lengthy. At least three songs could have been easily removed and the movie could have been trimmed by 15-20 minutes. The songs block the flow of the story and irritate the viewer who is interested to be lost in the mystery.

Viju Shah has kept the melody intact in his music compositions. However keeping less no. of songs would have been better for the movie.

The story roams around Bobby Deol and he has done well. However, the director has not given him a proper hairdo. Anyway, it's his second movie only (the debut movie being Barsaat - 1995) and he has done everything viz. romance, emotion, action, song and dance etc. satisfactorily. Both the heroines also have done well. Manisha Koirala used to look very pretty those days. The complete supporting cast is well in place. Om Puri and Prem Chopra deserve special admiration for their performances. The dialogs written for Om Puri are also brilliant, highlighting the fearless and stylish personality of his character.

Summing up, Gupt is a well-made murder mystery which should not be missed by any mystery fan.

Rajiv Rai's Gupt is an ordinary yet enjoyable thriller, but there is something unique about it. It had a certain ingenuousness and charm, whether it's the way it was made, directed or acted, the music, the cast or the dialogues. This style has somehow disappeared from today's Bollywood. As a thriller, it does work and manages to keep the viewer interested and curious, but it is mostly a love triangle. Bobby Deol plays the leading man who is accused of killing his stepfather. Deol is too angry at times and is not the best choice for the role, but he generally does an okay job. It's an interesting paradox watching a serious actress like Manisha Koirala in an all-out commercial flick. She is amazingly beautiful, sexy, attractive and convincing in a role that is very different from what she was generally used to doing. It may have been her choice to get a slight relief after all the intense dramatic characters she played before.

Gupt clearly belongs to Kajol though, not because she made it that way, but because the script allowed her to go to such extents. She was compelling, and despite the scary and dark shades of her character, she ends up being sympathised by the audience. The contradiction between her restrained act before the true identity of her character is discovered and her wild animal afterwards only deepens the significance of her role and the impression of her performance. Surprisingly, the movie does not go over-the-top, even though it would have been easier to with such a simple yet complicated storyline. At times it does look completely messy with all these idiotic and corrupted politicians, but overall it's interesting throughout and towards the end after the secret is disclosed, it's even more interesting. This one's an entertainer, well done.
  • Good movie to watch for especially the movie's all songs are good to hear and also the suspense murder mystery is neatly done.
  • A movie in true Rajiv Rai tradition, Gupt is a big budget suspense thriller. The songs are well shot and the movie runs at a pace which manages to sustain interest throughout. Bobby plays a man wrongfully convicted for his father's murder and all evidence is against him. He escapes from prison and puts together all the clues to catch the real killer. Kajol acts well while Manisha looks cool. In fact she looks better than she has ever looked in all her recent movies. If you like well made Hindi masala movies, this is your movie.

Rajiv Rai after series of action films YUDH, TRIDEV, CHAALBAAZ and MOHRA hardly great films but yet watchable. In GUPT he brought a fresh cast, Bobby, Kajol and Manisha Koirala The film is still remembered for it's hit music which is always a selling factor of Rajiv Rai films, thrills and also the identity of the villain which does surprise. The film starts off well on a routine note but the scene at the birthday party is superb, The twist is well handled and scenes in the jail though too similar to Sunny Deol's Ghayal and all are well handled, however the constant focus to action and music does reduce impact but yet there are several brilliant scenes like Om Puri scenes, though at times there are too many cinematic liberties and too much formulaic stuff. The villain's identity is well handled in the end and the end is good There are some corny scenes like how Om Puri reaches the location at the end?

Direction by Rajiv Rai is good Music by Viju Shah was amazing, Duniya Haseeno Ka Mela, Mere Khwabon, Mere Sanam are all good though picturisation is crude of most songs

Bobby Deol looks disinterested throughout and hardly impresses, surprisingly he was better in Barsaat before this film but here he is too dull, his dialogue delivery too is bad Manisha Koirala hams through her role Kajol gives the best performance in a challenging role, For people who don't know it's really surprising Amongst rest Mostly Rajiv Rai regulars Om Puri is amazing in a role written for Naseeruddin Shah Sharat Saxena is okay, Prem Chopra hams, Raza Murad is as usual Ashok Saraf and Sadashiv Amrapurkar are good Raj Babbar hams as usual, Paresh Rawal is great, Khulbushan Kharbanda is okay, Dalip Tahil, Priya Tendulkar are as usual
  • Gupt was one of the biggest hits of 1997. It was a lavishly mounted film and directed by Rajiv Rai. Gupt starred Bobby Deol, Manisha Koirala and Kajol in the main roles.

I have watched this movie many times and its varied theme made me interested in it. The movie is not a typical Bollywood crap.

A plot with lots of twist and turns. The movie is about Bobby Deol who is convicted to life imprisonment for murdering his step father.Deol has all the evidence against him in the murder case to kill his father. His love interest is played by old flame Kajol as well as Manisha Koraila who his step father wanted him to get married to.Deol escapes from jail with the help of Manisha and vows to get to the bottom of the matter as to who killed his step father and why He also has the uneviable task of running from the law as a convict who has run from jail.Other co-actors like ompuri, raza murad, prem chopra and others have also performed to their best.i will not tell more as it will reveal suspense for those who have not watched it yet.

Direction by Rajiv Rai is excellent. As the writer, he has done extremely well to keep audience guessing till the end.He also keeps the pace of the film tight and fluid as the editor. The cinematography is eye-catching and Gupt features some of the best locales ever filmed.

The music was a very important factor in making the movie a hit. I think that the music of the movie is among my all-time favorites.Music director viju shah has done an excellent job.Movie's Background score is classic.

''Mere Sanam'', ''Yeh Pyassi Javani'', ''Gupt Gupt'', ''Yeh Pyar Kya Hai'', Mere Khabon Mein'', ''Becheniyam'', ''Duniya Haseenom Ka Mela'' - all are great to hear with some quick as well as different beats. This is one of those less movies which has each and every song perfect and loving to hear. The film's soundtrack is one of the best of the year 1997.

This movie is definitely a must see and I highly recommended to everyone.see it to Believe it.10/10
  • this song seems to have the bill (brit police soap/drama) theme tune stuck in it!! i was very confused!! why???! although i first saw this movie when i was 14, 8 years on, i just realised what on earth that tune was!! In Gupt Bobby Deol sure is a guy on the move. He romances two women, Kajol and Manisha, bashes up anyone he suspects for his dad's murder and escapes the cops in the nick of the time, displaying the same ESP they do when they trace him to wherever he is. In between, he meets his mother who believes he's knocked off his step-dad to convince her that he's innocent and meets all his dad's friends and colleagues in an effort to trace the real culprit. There's murder, mayhem, chases but little of the promised 'spine chilling suspense'.
  • Gupt is probably the best murder mystery film ever made in Bollywood in modern times. I don't think there's been any that superseded.

The elements that make this such a great murder mystery are that the director Rajiv Rai directed classics like Yudh, Tridev, Vishwatma and Mohra, a great soundtrack by Viju Shah, top star cast of Bobby Deol, Manisha Koirala and Kajol and top supporting cast of Om Puri, Paresh Rawal, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Ashok Saraf, the famous villains Raza Murad, Prem Chopra, Sharat Saxena, Tej Sapru and Mukesh Rishi and, Raj Babbar and Kulbushan Kharbanda.

The intro was a James Bond-style title card with a lady dancing and the locket, the item that leads to the murderer. I don't think there has been and still there's been a credits intro like this.

None of the actors had any flaws in the film, everything was perfect.

Even in 2018 it is a timeless classic.

One star got knocked off because of Bobby's hair style. They guy is hot, so don't give him a horrible hair style! The other reason why this star was knocked off was because of the outfits....HORRIBLE, HIDEOUS, GROTESQUE 80's getup! I am a fashion lover, and these outfits in the movie was a fashion no-no. Another star got knocked off because of the dancing/ singing routines. They came in at weird places in the movie. One minute they were in a house and the next minute they were out in the middle of nowhere. HOW DID THEY GET THERE??? WAS IT A DREAM??? You have to let some clues as to why they should sing and dance at that moment. The costumes were hideous in the dance/song scenes. Choreography sucked. Who designed these dance moves? Even I can dance like that without practice :) Again, the guy is hot...make him look hot, please. The last star was knocked off because of crazy lady's unibrow. It was very startling to see a unibrow on film. You think they would have eyebrow waxings on set? It doesn't hurt. I get it every done every month. Was the actress resilient to getting her eyebrow waxed?

The good! I loved the plot. It was sneaky, and I was kept on the edge of my seat (or in this case bed) the whole time. I know who the killer was from the very beginning. First, take a look at the necklace. Who could it belong to? That's all I'm saying. Figure out who the killer is for yourself.
  • I liked Gupt more than I liked Tridev, Mohra and Vishwathma. The plot was unconventional and some of the songs in the movie were awesome. But I must say the lack of better choreography and good costumes stick out like a sore thumb in most of the songs.

The success of Gupt lies in the brilliant portrayal of one of its leading lady, Kajol. She carries the whole movie on her shoulders. She was thoroughly into her character.

The climax will give you goosebumps. After a lot of red herrings, you can't really guess who the real killer might be. And that's where the victory of the script and the director lies.

There are lots of characters in this movie though. But these characters are added to heighten the suspense.

Bobby Deol is strictly okay. He should cut his hair and develop a strong screen presence like his brother Sunny Deol. Manisha Koirala looks good but looks heavy and wears clothes that accentuate her heaviness. The rest of the cast are okay but Om Puri stands out among the rest. I liked the way he mouths his dialogue.

Overall, Gupt is a must watch for Kajol fans! Go watch it with an open heart.

What can I say this movie is terrific. There is suspense, comedy, action, and even some horror! I know that it is probably a remake, but then again, just about everything is ultimately a remake. All the main actors and supporting casts are fantastic. Kajol shines as the villain, as does Manisha, both looked sexy and Deol is better than usual. Om Puri was legendary as always. This movie has more than enough action, but the comedy was surprisingly actually funny! The poetry by the lawyer was the peak of all the humor. Everyone has already praised the other aspects of this film, so I wont elaborate on all of them. The music, which is universally acclaimed, deserves all of its accolades. "Duniya Haseeno Ka Mela", "Mere Khwabon Mein Tu", and my personal favorite "Yeh Pyaar Kya Hai" are extremely well known, but the other songs are also great, thus placing the late great Anand Bakshi's soundtrack amongst the best of the generation. Oh, and did I say Manisha looked sexier in this than in any otther movie? Because that is true. Ultimately a great film that stands the test of time. 10/10.

I remember watching this the first time at home when it released, I was about 12 years old, I love a good thriller.

The love story was so wierd and forced.

30 minutes in to the film, i was shouting at the TV. The first murder and Bobby deol finding a locket was pure amateur and childish. When a killer leaves behind a item, like a large locket... surely you have to examine it, it belongs to the killer, so maybe there is a name or photo.. but no, our sloppy hero Bobby deol defused to just gaze at it and it took the ending and a child to use common sense and open it, to reveal the killer.

By that point, me and my family were already guessing who the killer is and we immediately fingered Kajol. It was so obvious.

I'm writing this review, as Wikipedia has labelled this as one of Bollywood best thrillers.

This got me laughing off my sofa. Best thriller? Yeah right... maybe for dummies.

The actors are unique to this film. Bobby Deol is head strong and determined (his usual self). But praises for Kajol!!! Her character is complex and mind blowing, making the movie suspenseful. She proves she can act in any role. Manisha added some sparkle to the movie and helped Kajol's character. Paresh Rawal was the amazing. He usually plays funny roles but this was another side of him. The plot was very thorough and detailed. Everything was laid out piece by piece so there was no time to guess or ponder. The music was melodious and added embellishment to the movie. The climax was heart stopping and filled with goose-bumps. This movie is definitely a must see and I recommended to everyone who likes thriller or suspense.
  • Manisha is good. Kajol is better. And Bobby is the best .... Screenplay is good, direction is better and music is the best

Awesome, Mindblowing, Superb and similar adjectives to describe the movie....

Well "gupt" happens to be my most favorite Hindi movie and I have seen it 10-12 times !! The story lineup, screenplay, choreography , songs and a pirouette end are the USP of "Gupt".

Rajiv Rai has given the audience his magnum opus !

You should see the movie to gauge it's excellence ! What else to say...!
  • Warning: Spoilers
First of all let me say I am a huge huge Rajiv Rai but unfortunately after the failure of Pyar Ishq aur Mohabbat and Asambhav his name is now forgotten but back in the early 90's he made some very entertaining action flicks like Tridev,Vishwatama,Mohra and Gupt. Gupt is a murder mystery but what sets it apart from other movies of its kind is the fact that the identity of the killer actually shocked me. The plot is lifted of The Fugitive(1993) but the writers have added their own touches. Usually when I watch Bollywood murder mysteries I normally work out who the killer is before the end and therefore when the killer is finally revealed I am not shocked and that is a major flaw. This is where Gupt succeeds, I suspected everyone from Raza Murad to Kulbulshan Karbanda to Paresh Rawal but I never suspected the actual killer. Rajiv Rai movies are heavily reliant on chart topping songs to make his movies a success, in Tridev there was "Oye Oye, in Vishwatama there was "Saat Samundar" and in Mohra there was "To cheez badi hai mast mast" but while Gupt does have excellent songs it does not rely heavily on them to sell the movie, the story does that on it's own. Rajiv Rai has always repeated his actors, He used Sunny Deol in Tridev and Vishwatama,he used Naseer Uddin Shah in Tridev,Vishwatama,Mohra and Asambhav and character actors like Raza Murad and Tej Sapru have appeared in almost all of his movies. I first watched Gupt in 97 when it had just released and therefore the twist wasn't widely known. Unfortunately the twist is now widely known and therefore the shock value doesn't exist for the people who watch it for the first time now and the twist is a vital element of Gupt. Watch Gupt not just for it's twist at the end, watch it also for the great story and wonderful songs. Highly recommended for people who love Bollywood suspense stories.
  • What I really love the most about this film is the songs. The music is so magical and a little bit mysterious...Viju Shah did a brilliant job undoubtedly...'Mere Khwabon Mein Tu', 'Mushkil Bada Yeh Pyaar Hai', 'Gupt Gupt', 'Yeh Pyaar Kya Hai' and 'Duniya Haseeno Ka Mela' - these are my personal favorites...

Moving on to the great performances of the three leads...'Bobby Deol' beautifully played a character who is wrongly framed for the murder of his father...During my childhood I was not so fond of 'Manisha Koirala'. But after watching her 'Gupt', 'Dil Se', 'Khamoshi' and 'Bombay', I've started liking her a lot...She is such a brilliant actress...I like to watch 'Kajol' with SRK on screen...My favorite movies of Kajol are - Baazigar, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and My Name Is Khan...She is paired with SRK in all of these films...Besides these films, I liked her in Gupt and Dushman where she is not paired with SRK...This film is undoubtedly a milestone of these three leads' careers...

Finally, I just want to say if anybody like to watch suspense thriller Hindi film, I must say this is a must watch movie for him/her...
  • Gupt works pretty well for the most part. The only drawback is over length. Roughly forty-five minutes could have been edited out without any loss of plot clarity. The film is basically an enjoyable whodunit with Bobby Deol falsely accused of murder. While the songs increase the film's length, some of them are definitely worth watching. Kajol does well in a slightly underdeveloped role. Manisha Koirala provides high-wattage glamour. The various twists and turns help hide the truth regarding the real killer, though it becomes obvious who it is long before the end.

    Overall 6/10
  • Rating

    6/10

Overlong but entertaining Bollywood suspense thriller. Has catchy musical numbers and a long drawn twisty storyline but keeps viewer interest right till the end. Performances are strictly adequate with some usual clichés.
  • Gupt the hidden truth my all time favorite director after mohra Rajiv Rai made this movie amazing performance by every actor. The music is the best all songs and lyrics and the tunes are still chartbusters. This movie is out and out suspense movie with great background music great direction beautiful locations and great performances by Bobby deol ,manisha ,Kajol , paresh Rawal and om puri must watch
  • The movie is very good. The direction is brilliant. The screenplay is excellent. The story is brilliant. It tells about Sahil who is the son of the chief minister. He is in love with Ishika. But he is to marry Sheetal. But he wants to marry Ishika. One night Sahil find his father in a pool of blood. He is being accused.Sent to jail and soon escapes. And he goes to Sheetals house. The movie is a pure entertainer.Bobbyy is an actor who i don't appreciate but gives a good performance.Manisha does a good jjob.Kajol is the star of the movie and gives a very good performance(highlight:Kajol won the best villain award(The first lady to won the award. The second is Priyanka chopra in aitraaz(2004).The others do a good job too. This is the best movie of Rajiv Rai and this is also his last hit.The action scenes are well shoot. The cinematography is good. The title is good too.The music is quitte okay with only 4good songs.Highly recommended
  • Gupt is about Sahil(Bobby Deol), a man who is framed for the murder of his step father. He is sent to prison and depends on Isha to help him get out and have his revenge on whoever framed him. Strangely the bigger problem might be the fact that both Sheetal and Isha(Manisha Koirala and Kajol) are vying for his love. Meanwhile a cop is hot in the pursuit of Sahil. The are 4-5 suspects.

It is one of the films which shocks you, not in a bad way but in a good way . Story is original and fantastic . At no point of time you will feel bored . Performances by all the actors are superb especially from Bobby and Om Puri . Its music is great , some fast catchy tones and some melodious music.

Its a suspense film but you can watch it any number of times .
  • A movie which was very ahead of its time. When people doesn't know the thing called thriller, it proved its mettle. No one is making such movies anymore :(
  • Gupt has its flaws, and quite a few at that, but it is an entertaining and holds your attention till the end, although just about.

The story starts off at breakneck pace and keeps you immersed, but it gets repetitive and drawn out towards the end. A 30 minute time chunk could have easily been shaved off the runtime without losing too much in the way of plot integrity.

If you look past some of the over the top sequences, the story is immersive, a whodunit, that keeps you guessing for large parts of the film.

There are far too many characters in the film, mostly insignificant, which could have been greatly reduced. Having so many minor characters coming in and out and different points does hamper the development of the main cast.

Kajol does well with her limited screentime and underdeveloped character. Manisha Koirala too does her part, although her job for most parts is to up the glam quotient without too much in the way of getting into the motives of the character. Bobby Deol tries hard enough, and for most parts fits in, but given that he gets the most screentime and a multifaceted character, a lot more could have been done with it. As for the other characters, Om Puri makes a mark as the dogged police officer. Among the rest, there's nothing much to do, but some of them do come off as too irritating, some too irrelevant.

The songs are good, the background music catchy although again, too many song and dance sequences does begin to take a toll, and you wish they'd use the time to push the story ahead.

The editing is jarry with sudden cuts and scenes move at very sudden, irrational pace. It does lack in fluidity.

For all its negatives, it's still a very entertaining movie with a good story line at its centre and makes for a fun watch, without asking a lot from you.
  • My gut instincts tell me that a Bobby Deol film is to be avoided at all costs but I still managed to get roped into watching Gupt – it does have Manisha and Kajol – two of the finest actresses of mainstream cinema. He is rich boy, childhood friends with a flunkey's daughter (Kajol) but the father prohibits a marriage between the two. Bobby is accused of murdering his father, lands up in jail, is busted out by his friend Manisha. Then he sets out on a quest to find the real killer – there are corrupt ministers, strange doctors, weird hoodlums, even a very suspicious mother. In the meantime the hero also romances Kajol for real, and Manisha in his or her dreams – I forget which, as it is all highly irrelevant.

This is a most boring and illogical film. Bobby cannot act to save his life, Manisha is wasted, and let no one tell you that the film showcases good acting by Kajol. Negative roles of note do not consist of a seemingly normal person suddenly turning psychotic and wielding a knife with a wild look. There is certainly a secret about Gupt – how on earth could two fine actresses act in such a trashy and illogical film, and why could they do nothing to salvage this travesty?
  • Gupt is really a thrilling blockbuster of 90's. I would appreciate the director for doing an excellent 11th hour suspense blockbuster. This movie reminds me the days of repeatedly watchable thrillers like Teesri Manzil (1966) and Jewel thief (1967).Excellent background score adds a great value to the movie. Of course really a taut movie which increases your anxiety to know the suspense. The major characters of movie had done a great job by delivering excellent Dialogues.Even lengthy a repeatedly watchable thriller by even non-Bollywood fans.No other trilling blockbuster came like as Gupt in the 90's.Justwatch it and enjoy the suspense.
