The most important event in South America

Andrés Wood (no relation with Ed Wood!) shows with humour how the soccer is present in the Chile's everyday life. More than a movie about soccer is about the people who is around it. Daniel Muñoz performance, the burp contest in Calama and the Gustavo Moscoso's goal are the highlights of this movie. In the screen Chile ties with Germany 1-1. Actually, this match was played in 1982 world cup and we lost 4-1! This movie was a success in Chile and one of the best in the second half of the 90s.

Excellent insight into the southern American culture.

There is no other sport in the world that appeals to most countries than football (soccer). This is particularly true in South America and Europe. In south America, if the game is important, people would stop working for the duration of the match. Someone would bring a TV to the classroom, turn on the TV on the conference room, or just watch the game at a bar. Andres Wood portrays three different realities through this "passion of multitudes" (the tag line for football in Chile). The three stories also show landscapes and characteristics of Chile's middle class in the north (arid desert), middle (big urban setting) and the south (fjiords, Islands and Rain). They show the importance of football to the culture, they show honesty, the will to come forward and the passiveness of the isolated. They are three very pretty stories, with wonderful photography and a great insight into the culture of south America taking Chile as an example. Thumbs up.
