An imprisoned I.R.A. fighter is freed to help stop a brutal, seemingly "faceless" assassin from completing his next job.
The large, remote-controlled machine gun is a mock-up of the Soviet-designed KPV (Krupnokaliberniy Pulemyot Vladimirova) Heavy Machine Gun. The weapon used for the mock-up is actually an American M2HB .50BMG Heavy Machine Gun with a lot of parts added to it to make it look like a KPV. The name "Polish ZSU-33" is fictional.

(at around 17 mins) When ordering the weapon from the speaking computer, the Jackal claims he would prefer non-American equipment; however, later on in the movie (at around 55 mins) he tells Jack Black's character that the ammunition is depleted uranium, which is only used by US forces.
The Australian Theatrical version omitted the shot where The Jackal shoots Lamont's arm off in the testing scene, and removed the line in the nightclub scene in the beginning where Terak's brother calls Valentina a "scar-faced c**t". These cuts were made so the movie would achieve an M rating (recommended 15+ years). The full version was released on video with an MA rating (restricted 15+ years).
