Ben Stiller is reprising his role from “Happy Gilmore” in the follow-up to Adam Sandler’s 1996 classic sports comedy, “Happy Gilmore 2.”
Netflix is backing the long-awaited sequel, which is currently filming in New Jersey. Along with Sandler and Stiller, the cast will include familiar faces such as Christopher McDonald as pro-golfer Shooter McGavin and Julie Bowen as Sandler’s character’s romantic interest Virginia Venit. New additions to the golf world of “Happy Gilmore 2” include comedian Nick Swardson, filmmaker Benny Safdie, musician Bad Bunny, actor Margaret Qualley and NFL star Travis Kelce.
Netflix didn’t respond to Variety’s request for comment about Stiller’s casting.
Kyle Newacheck is directing the sequel from a script by Sandler and his frequent collaborator Tim Herlihy.

Apparently, Adam Sandler’s “The Chanukah Song” isn’t as ubiquitous as we thought.
Kathy Bates, who played Mama Boucher in The Waterboy, had never heard of the song — or Sandler — when she first received the script for the film. “Did you get The Waterboy right out of the gate?” Drew Barrymore asked Bates on her show this week.
“I actually read the first 12 pages and threw it in the trash right next to my bed,” Bates confessed. But the script didn’t stay in the garbage for long. Her niece Linda, who’s worked with Bates since 1994, rescued the screenplay soon after and asked why she threw it out. “Oh, it’s some football script, I don’t know what it is.”
Linda read the name on the front of the script. “Adam Sandler! You don’t know ‘The Chanukah Song’?”
Bates confessed she’d heard of neither, but Linda set her straight.

After a remarkable 50-year career in Hollywood, Oscar-winning actress Kathy Bates has decided to retire, with the CBS reboot of Matlock serving as her final project.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Bates, 76, expressed her plans to step away from acting, calling this moment her “last dance.”
Reflecting on her career, Bates shared that acting has, at times, consumed her life, leaving little room for personal space. “It becomes my life,” Bates explained. “Sometimes I get jealous of having this talent, because I can’t hold it back, and I just want my life.” She added that she often felt out of place in the industry, noting, “I never felt dressed right or well. I felt like a misfit.”

Like many popular comedic actors of the day, Adam Sandler got his start on “Saturday Night Live” first as a writer and then as a cast member. He was spotted by weekend update anchor Dennis Miller doing stand-up comedy and Miller recommended him for the show. Sandler was a big success on the show, particularly doing song parodies during the Weekend Update segments. Sandler left the show in 1995 after only five years on the program. Years later when Conan O’Brien was having his own problems with NBC, Sandler admitted to O’Brien that he was actually fired from “SNL” and didn’t leave voluntarily as had been assumed.
Sandler started off doing comedy films after that but has evolved into doing dramatic work at times. While he has a pretty strong track record as a box office draw, he has also often been the target of poor reviews from critics...

Disney didn't exactly have a banner year (by Disney standards anyhow) in 2023. None of the studio's films topped $1 billion last year which, again, is not the marker for success. However, for a studio with as many reliable franchises as Disney has, it's notable, particularly when movies like "The Marvels" and "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" flopped so badly. In any event, the Mouse House is having a real bounce-back year in 2024, with "Inside Out 2" literally ranking as one of the biggest movies of all-time at this point. Yet, oddly enough, it's R-rated movies that are truly leading the way for the traditionally family-friendly company at the moment.
This past weekend, Disney held the number one and number two spots at the box office, with "Deadpool & Wolverine" reclaiming the top spot in its fifth weekend with $18.3 million. Meanwhile, last weekend's champion "Alien: Romulus" landed at number two with $16.2 million.

Inquiring minds like Joe Rogan’s want to know: How does Adam Sandler come up with the ideas for all of his movies? On this week’s Joe Rogan Experience podcast, he asked if Sandler started with a character? A premise? What was the silly secret behind all those blockbusters?
The Sandman didn’t have a definitive answer, but sometimes he just knew he had a winner on his hands. “Billy Madison, I remember I thought, ‘Oh, this could be great. A grown-up who does elementary school again. And that's a great idea — I get to be goofy, get to bully these little kids, then all of a sudden connect with these kids and have fun growing up again.”
Play
There was only one problem in Sandler’s mind. “Part of my head was like, well, Rodney (Dangerfield) did Back to School already. So everyone’s gonna say, I just ripped off Back to School.

One of the all-time greats in the world of silent film comedy, Harold Lloyd, is perhaps best known for his monumental work Safety Last!, which, in addition to providing Boeing with a perfect slogan, gave us the iconic scene in which Lloyd perilously hangs from a clockface.
He also starred in classics like the college football comedy The Freshman, which no doubt served as the inspiration for Adam Sandler’s The Waterboy.
But before both of those projects, Lloyd was the victim of a freak accident that left him horribly injured, all due to a mishap that wouldn’t have seemed out of place in one of his silent comedies. In 1919, Lloyd inked a deal with Pathe distributors to star in a new series of films, and agreed to pose for a photographer in order to promote the arrangement. There is a unique charm and allure to college football that you just don’t get from watching the NFL. Yes, people still bet on college football lines but there isn’t the same level of pressure or financial burden on college sports which just makes it that little bit purer and more wholesome.
As does the fact that the youngsters playing the game aren’t weighed down by years of expectations. Instead they’re eagerly chasing their dreams and enjoying every minute of playing a sport that they love.
It’s no wonder then, that the world of college football has spawned so many wholesome and engaging movies and TV series. Here are a few that we think are worthy of your time…

“Happy Gilmore 2” is apparently being developed by Adam Sandler, and a script even exists. Shooter McGavin actor Christopher McDonald revealed the news during a radio interview on “Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan.” McDonald said he had a recent run-in with Sandler, who unexpectedly pulled out the first draft for a sequel to their 1996 sports comedy classic.
“I saw Adam [Sandler] about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,'” McDonald said. “I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that,’ and he shows me the first draft of ‘Happy Gilmore 2.’ Maybe you should cut that out [of this audio] because I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”
Variety has reached out to Sandler’s representative for comment.
Sandler starred in and co-wrote “Happy Gilmore,” which was directed by Dennis Dugan.

As the social and political turmoil of 1960s America spilled into the 1970s, network television executives and producers knew they could no longer ignore the thorny issues being argued over kitchen tables and at work/school. The Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Equal Rights Amendment, etc. were driving a wedge between families and neighbors. So when Norman Lear trotted out the unrepentant bigot Archie Bunker on "All in the Family" in 1971, many people in the country felt seen. And while they might not agree on the hot-button topics explored on this show, they could at least laugh through their many disagreements.
There came a point, however (somewhere between President Richard M. Nixon's resignation and the end of the Vietnam War), where television viewers grew weary of all these socially conscious sitcoms. Yes, they were still watching them in huge numbers, but they needed a break from the nonstop tumult of their lives.

The week of Thanksgiving is always a major one for moviegoers, and these days, that holds true for streaming too. Netflix typically offers up a new movie that becomes an instant hit among subscribers, and this year it was the animated Adam Sandler film "Leo." If you haven't seen the ads for "Leo," it's a musical coming-of-age comedy about an old lizard (Sandler) who becomes a mentor to fifth graders after they discover the class pet can talk. It's more likely that you have already seen this movie, though, as Netflix reports that 34.6 million people tuned in to watch it during the week of November 20th to 27, 2023.
Streamers' self-reported data is notoriously less-than-transparent, but an animated kids' movie doing huge numbers during a long weekend is a no-brainer. "Leo" also actually looks good; the smooth animation is closer to Dreamworks or Pixar style than typical Netflix fare, and Sandler reigns...

Streaming services are now trying to ration their upcoming original content due to the ongoing actors strike and the only recently-resolved writers’ strike, so we’re going to see a thinning-down of new releases across the board over the next six months at least. Hulu will be adding a lot of library TV shows and movies in November, but there are only a few new major original projects hitting the streamer this month.
Hulu’s spotlight streaming series in November is Black Cake, which is based on the bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. For a movie that's mostly about how friendships are forever, the 2010 Adam Sandler comedy "Grown Ups" may have had fans wondering about a conspicuously missing face from the sequel. For much of Sandler's career on the big screen, he's been joined by longtime friend and collaborator Rob Schneider. Starting with 1998's "The Waterboy," the two actors have appeared in well over a dozen movies together, from the likes of "Mr. Deeds" and "The Longest Yard" to even an animated movie like "Eight Crazy Nights." Contrary to recent rumors, the bond still seems to be going strong as the two ended up joining forces again in 2017's "Sandy Wexler" and once more in "Hubie Halloween" three years ago. But that hasn't stopped fans from wondering why, after such a prominent role in "Grown Ups," Schneider didn't return for another go-around in "Grown Ups 2."

Earthgang have shared “Die Today,” the latest preview of their upcoming EP, Earthgang vs the Algorithm: Rip Human Art. The accompanying video features the duo of WowGr8 and Olu attending their own funeral, where fellow rapper Denzel Curry gives a bizarre eulogy.
Produced by Olu with Buddy Red, “Die Today” addresses fake love. Whereas Olu asks whether his partner would “cross the galaxy” to check on him, WowGr8 is more defiant, rapping, “They say the good die young, I’ma be the last remain/ Hate all you want, I can’t stop, I’m a force of nature.”
In the video, Earthgang imagine how their deaths would spark reactions from news outlets like Fox News and CNN, Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update, and social media. Thanks to all the attention, the song piles up streams and zooms to the top of the charts. At the funeral itself, Curry mocks...

Adam Sandler drew raves for his performance in “Uncut Gems,” but his latest Netflix movie, “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah,” has so far gotten even better critics’ reviews, as well as raves for his youngest daughter, Sunny.
As of Monday afternoon, the family comedy, which co-stars his daughters, had a 96% positive ratings from critics, while the 2019 Safdie Brothers drama sits at 91%.
Audiences, at 66% positive, were less gung-ho about the Sammi Cohen-directed comedy, which premiered Aug. 25 on the streamer.
Critics are saying, essentially, “hurrah for nepotism” about Sandler’s daughter Sunny, who stars as Stacy Friedman who clashes with her Bff (Samantha Lorraine) right before their respective bat mitzvahs.
Sunny’s real-life sister Sadie Sandler plays her older sister, Ronnie, while former “Saturday Night Live” regular who also produced,” plays their father in role with limited screen time. Jackie Sandler, their real mother, also appears in the film,...

Meanwhile, WowGr8 (aka Doctor Dot) alludes to Boucher’s choice to switch over to the rival team when he spits, “Growing up, might need to be the villain.” He continues with some boastful bars: “I’m out the space, you can never come near this/ I heard your tape, but I really ain’t feel it/ Fresh out the woods, where they follow my footprints.”

Jennifer Aniston has named her favourite Adam Sandler film – and the choice is rather unexpected.
The actor has reunited with the comedian for Murder Mystery 2, a sequel to their comedy that broke streaming records for Netflix in 2019.
Both actors are doing the promotional rounds for the film, which is released later this month.
As part of this, Sandler participated in an interview with The Washington Post, which featured commentary from entertainment figures to have worked with the actor since his rise to fame in the 1990s.
It was for this interview that Aniston selected the Sandler film she thinks is the best.
Recalling being unable to “keep a straight face” when watching the actor, the Friends star said: “Personally, I think You Don’t Mess With the Zohan is one of the funniest movies.”

It feels just like last month we were complimenting Hulu on its true crime offerings. Well, with its list of new releases for February 2023, Hulu is staying in the true crime lane. Suppose that’ll happen when you push back the release date of a series or two.
February sees the arrival of three notable true crime series on Hulu. Taiwan Crime Stories premieres on Feb. 1 and presents four true tales from Taiwan’s criminal “dark underbelly.” That will be followed by ABC News Studios’ Killing County on Feb. 3. That three-episode series ponders the question “what happens when police kill?” The most interesting true crime offering premieres on Feb. 9. That’s when Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence College shares its four-episode saga of Larry Ray and the young college students he victimized.

February can be a weird month. It’s too late to wish anyone “Happy New Year,” late enough to abandon resolutions, and too early to leave the house if you want to avoid getting caught in nasty weather (even in Los Angeles).
This month also marks the third and final season of Hulu’s widely acclaimed “Wu-Tang: An American Saga,” which charts the rise of the Wu-Tang clan over time. Season 3 catches up with the Wu-Tang members after their first album, facing divergent paths in the years that follow. As with any group navigating the challenging lure of fame and money, it’s a treacherous road — but an indelible journey. “Wu-Tang: An American Saga” Season 3 premieres February 15 on Hulu.

Coming off the heels of the epic masterpiece that was 1999's "Magnolia," Paul Thomas Anderson needed a break. The massive ensemble casts of both that movie and 1997's "Boogie Nights" (which featured many of the same collaborators) as well as their massive respective runtimes had signified Anderson as a director of note. They were loaded with (sometimes literally) explosive scenes, teary confessions, a beautiful eye for San Fernando Valley views, and unforgettable widescreen images. His follow-up, "Punch-Drunk Love," would simultaneously have Anderson refining his established style and also abandoning his comfort zone.
Where Anderson took his talents next was perhaps the most shocking thing a director of his reputation and critical praise could do: make an Adam Sandler romantic comedy. The actor was often accused of polluting the multiplex with lowbrow, dumbed-down slapstick. The idea that a director known for quirky, literate ensemble epics would pair off with Sandler was...

It’s somewhat hard to believe, but Adam Sandler — the guest on this edition of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, which was recorded in late 2022 in front of an audience at the Newport Beach Film Festival, where Sandler received the fest’s performance of the year award — has been a star for more than 30 years now.
Hired as a writer on Saturday Night Live in 1990, the Brooklyn-born comedian soon began appearing in his own sketches and won over audiences with his madcap man-child characters. He then transitioned to a film career, co-writing and starring in movies about lovable losers who win the day, like 1995’s Billy Madison, 1996’s Happy Gilmore and 1998’s The Wedding Singer and The Waterboy.
While Sandler, now 56, has continued to consistently pump out unabashedly goofy comedies to which audiences have flocked, he has also, with increasing frequency, taken aback critics by deploying serious acting...

In the 1998 comedy film "The Waterboy," Bobby Boucher, a sheltered and socially challenged 31-year-old "water distribution engineer," earns a spot on the last-place South-Central Louisiana State University Mud Dogs football team. Channeling pent-up aggression stemming from being bullied, Bobby becomes an unstoppable tackling machine, single-handedly turning the team around. However, he does this behind the back of his mama, Helen.
Played by Kathy Bates, Helen wants to do nothing more than keep Bobby hidden away with her in the house. Instead of committing forcible kidnapping and torture, like Bates' character does in the 1990 horror/thriller "Misery," Helen manipulates Bobby by telling her ill-informed son that football, or in her words, "foosball," -- along with college, little girls, astronomy and anything else she sees as a threat -- "is the devil."
During a 2019 episode of the Vanity Fair series "Career Timeline," Bates said she initially turned down the chance to play the overly prudish,...

Adam Sandler has shared how Kathy Bates helped him after realising “critics hated” his movies.
Throughout his career, the actor’s choices have been regularly ridiculed by reviewers, who have given several of his releases bad write-ups.
Films including Little Nicky, Grown-Ups, The Ridiculous 6 and Sandy Wexler have been torn apart by crtiics, and Sandler has acknowledged that, at first, such a reception came as a shock to him when he started writing and leading his own films in the mid-1990s.
“When Billy Madison came out, me and my friend who wrote it, we were just like, ‘Oh yeah, they’re going to write about this in New York!’” Deadline reports the actor as saying.
“We read the first one and we were like, ‘Oh my god, what happened? They hate us.’ And then we were like, ‘It must have been this paper,’ but then 90 per cent of the papers are going,...
