The lives of guards on Death Row are affected by one of their charges: a black man accused of child murder and rape, yet who has a mysterious gift.
Although Harry Dean Stanton appears in this film, and there are characters named "Harry" and "Dean Stanton", they are only coincidences; they were in the original novel, which was written long before Stanton was cast in the film.

(at around 2h 25 mins) After John Coffey finishes putting the tumor into Percy, Percy drops his baton onto the floor and no one picks it up. When he's walking toward Wild Bill's cell, the baton is hanging from a string wrapped around Percy's wrist.
There are no opening credits after the title has been shown, followed by the opening scene for place of film. Although it is now commonplace for films to not have opening credits, in 1999 it was somewhat rather unusually and it was considered for a trademark of director Frank Darabont.
