The lives of guards on Death Row are affected by one of their charges: a black man accused of child murder and rape, yet who has a mysterious gift.
This movie features three actors who have portrayed real-life U.S. Presidents: David Morse played George Washington in John Adams (2008), Gary Sinise played Harry S. Truman in Truman (1995) and James Cromwell played George Bush in W. (2008).

During prison scenes the guards are wearing sidearms. Real prison guards would not wear sidearms in the prison population for fear that one of the inmates might grab it and hold the guard hostage or kill the guard.
There are no opening credits after the title has been shown, followed by the opening scene for place of film. Although it is now commonplace for films to not have opening credits, in 1999 it was somewhat rather unusually and it was considered for a trademark of director Frank Darabont.
