It makes sense that Dan Fogelman and Sterling K. Brown would reunite with a White House drama. The This Is Us creator left Brown’s beloved Randall Pearson with hints of a presidential future when he stuck the landing with the series finale of their megahit NBC family drama in 2022.
But Fogelman’s new series, Paradise, isn’t one big This Is Us Easter egg. In fact, the writer, showrunner and Only Murders in the Building executive producer came up with the idea for the political thriller before he even launched This Is Us back in 2016.
“This was an idea I had that predated This Is Us, the kernel of what this show would become,” Fogelman tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It was an idea that I really liked and wanted to attack at some point, and I ended up getting swallowed up by This Is Us and Only Murders for quite a while.

Superhero movies wouldn't be as popular today if it wasn't for the success of Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man films in the 2000s, and the Peter Parker star has an unsurprisingly high net worth. Maguire first rose to prominence as an actor in the late '90s, often playing soft-spoken, somewhat dorky characters like in Pleasantville and The Cider House Rules. With this experience, Maguire was perfect to play the kind-hearted Peter Parker in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy. The actor has stepped out of the spotlight in recent years, though Maguire's cameos in Babylon and Spider-Man: No Way Home are beyond memorable.
Maguire was born in Santa Monica, California to parents Wendy and Vincent. While most parents want their kids to avoid the spotlight, Maguire's mother was the opposite, and reportedly paid him $100 to pursue drama instead of the culinary arts when he was in the sixth grade. This was clearly money well spent as,...

Tobey Maguire's acting is so much more than just a certain wall-crawling superhero. Maguire has been acting professionally since 1989, with his career really taking off in the late '90s. After a string of acclaimed supporting roles, Maguire broke out with 1998's Pleasantville, and won viewers' hearts with his distinctly dorky, often quiet presence on screen. However, what really launched Maguire to the top of the A-list was playing Peter Parker in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies, a role he reprised in the McU's Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).
With his decades-spanning career, Maguire has acted in everything from comedies like Tropic Thunder to period pieces like Seabiscuit and has received critical acclaim for his acting. There is something indescribable about how Maguire uses his eyes onscreen, always providing viewers with a window into how his character is feeling. However, his career is not without its ebbs and flows, which is typical for many actors.

In “The Wizard of Oz,” Dorothy (Judy Garland) just needs to click her heels three times to be transported from the dreamland of Oz. But right from the opening shot of “Wicked,” director Jon M. Chu’s sweeping camera — flying up from the sea to the cliffs, over miles of landscape, past the flying monkeys — grounds his Oz in a tangible place.
“If you’re going to believe characters that exist there that have real stakes, then you have to believe that this place exists,” said Chu while he was a guest on IndieWire’s Toolkit podcast. “What I realized is in [‘Wicked’ the Broadway] show, you walk into a theater, and you are in Oz, it’s decorated that way, and the bubble comes down [with Glinda], and you absolutely buy in… but the perspective of a movie audience is very different.”

On a cop show, no one is supposed to be more compelling than the cops themselves. One rung below them is the crime victim, whose backstory has to be interesting enough for us to care that our heroes are trying to bring them justice, even posthumously. Still lower on the ladder are all the bit players, whose contributions to the cops’ investigation might seem insignificant, but collectively fill out the picture: the retail clerk who digs out a receipt that helps to establish a timeline; the barmaid who remembers the victim was harassed by a regular; the neighbor who heard upsetting sounds through the wall.

The bond between siblings has been a longtime fascination for film and television shows, leading to some of the most famous brother and sister duos in film and television history. Those who think romance is the pinnacle of an interesting relationship need to look closer at these memorable bonds between sibling characters. Popular shows like Supernatural have a brother duo as their main characters, and one of Disney's biggest hits, Frozen, is all about the love between sisters rather than a princess and prince finding each other.
Besides brother and brother and sister with sister duos, though, there are also very memorable brother and sister characters at the heart of the best TV shows and movies ever. Reese Witherspoon almost played Cher in Clueless but ultimately lost the role to Alicia Silverstone. The success of Legally Blonde spawned a franchise, but Witherspoon only returned for the direct sequel. A prequel TV series called Elle, following a teenage Elle Woods, is in the works alongside Legally Blonde 3.
Reese Witherspoon has had various memorable roles on the big screen, among them Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, but she almost played another iconic rom-com blonde six years earlier. Witherspoons acting career began in 1991 with the TV film Wildflower and the coming-of-age movie The Man in the Moon, but her big break arrived with the 1998 teen fantasy comedy-drama Pleasantville. The 1998 sci-fi war film "Soldier" might be the best film in Paul W.S. Anderson's career. A kind-of-spinoff to "Blade Runner" (both films were written by David Webb Peoples), "Soldier" begins in 1996, when the American government implements a new program to raise children, from birth, to engage in combat. Over the course of decades, their souls are meticulously erased and they become wholly devoted to military conquest. The soldiers barely speak and don't appear to possess empathy or compassion. If anyone falls behind or displays weakness, they are executed.
One of the star soldiers of the program is Todd-3465 (Kurt Russell), who has been molded into a ruthless killing machine over the past 40 years. It is now 2036, and the Soldier program is under threat. It seems that a new breed of soldiers, genetically engineered ones, are stepping up to take Todd's place. Many '90s films exposed the dark side of suburban life, challenging the perception of perfection with hidden struggles and sinister secrets. Cinema of the '90s twisted suburban bliss into something malevolent and thought-provoking, delving into complex characters and societal issues. Movies like Clerks, Apt Pupil, and Pleasantville offered unique perspectives on suburban life, exploring existential dread, hidden pasts, and societal repression.
Suburban life was sold as the dream of the traditional nuclear family, but if movies are to be believed, the suburbs were also a hotbed for angst, lust, and murder. Movies of the 1990s were especially interested in exploring themes that uncovered the darker underbelly of the shiny beacon of middle-class life, piercing its pristine veil for its audience of disaffected youth. These films revealed that beneath the surface of the manicured lawns and the white picket fences lay a world of hidden desires and moral decay.

Before Maguire took on the role of Spider-Man and Witherspoon established herself as a prominent figure in Hollywood, they actively pursued roles to refine their skills. During the release of the movie, Witherspoon expressed how working on Pleasantville allowed her to form a connection with Maguire. Despite having some prior collaboration experience, it was during the preparation for Pleasantville that their bond truly solidified. There are a couple of movies about making movies out now – MaXXXine sees Mia Goth’s aspiring movie star bag a role in a 1980s horror sequel, while Fly Me To The Moon has Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum stage moon-landing footage as a Plan B for NASA in 1969. Tobey Maguire is best known to audiences around the world as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the first three adaptations of the comic-book hero’s adventures, but he has had a wide range of acting roles from intense dramas to comedies to even a Western. One of Maguire’s great advantages in getting started was the fact that, from his early days as a child actor, Maguire had a boyish look that allowed him to be cast as characters who were much younger than his own chronological age.
After his breakthrough role in 1997’s “The Ice Storm,” Maguire’s solid work soon came to the attention of Hollywood’s awards groups, and Maguire was honored at the Golden Globes with a Best Actor nomination for 2009’s “Brothers.” In addition, he also received two ensemble nominations from the Screen Actors Guild for his work in the films “The Cider House Rules” and 2003’s “Seabiscuit.

After Lucille Ball's spunky housewife Lucy signed off on the last episode of "I Love Lucy" but before Mary Tyler Moore did away with the nuclear family sitcom model with her own self-titled show, another actress was one of the faces of womanhood in comedy. Oscar-winning actress Donna Reed headlined "The Donna Reed Show" from 1958 to 1966, playing middle-class mother and housewife Donna Stone in the popular black-and-white series. Reed starred opposite Carl Betz, who played Donna's husband, pediatrician Dr. Alex Stone. In season 5, family friends Midge and Dave joined the fun, but for the most part, the show was all about the lighthearted hijinks of the Stone family.
Though "The Donna Reed Show" was popular upon release, it's now perhaps most often referenced as a pop cultural window into a time before second-wave feminism, when women were expected to spend their time cooking, cleaning, and child-rearing while men went to work.

The third installment of the Sands: International Film Festival of St Andrews has set its slate, and that will include director Steven Soderbergh engaging in a conversation with directors Anthony and Joe Russo. A New Orleans native who was raised in Tennessee, Reese Witherspoon is the very definition of good things coming in petite 5-foot-1 packages. She made her film debut at age 14 in 1991’s “The Man in the Moon,” a bittersweet Southern coming-of-age tale of first love and loss. From then on, she was pegged as a young actress to watch. She would soon gravitate towards edgier fare such as the underwhelming 1994 comedy “S.F.W.” and 1996’s “Freeway,” a rancid take on a Little Red Riding Hood on the run. She then scored a signature role as the rabidly ruthless high-school over-achiever Tracy Flick in 1999’s political satire “Election.” That was followed by her first major box-office hit, 2001’s “Legally Blonde,” as a perky Harvard student with a penchant for pink, feathered pens and cute Chihuahuas.

With Westworld, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy presented a vision of the future that was at once sleek and sexy, dark and dangerous. In Fallout, though, they've gone for something altogether more chaotic and comedic. Adapting the hugely popular game series, the new show promises a bonkers adventure through a post-apocalyptic locale that feels like Mad Max crossed with Pleasantville. See the new trailer:

The original screenplay is set in the rust belt of Pennsylvania involving a high school hockey rivalry from the mid-’90s that gets re-kindled 25 years later.
Ross is no stranger to uplifting sports movies as he directed and wrote the hit horse racing pic Seabiscuit, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. The four-time Oscar nominee has made a career out of writing and directing hit pics that include Pleasantville, The Hunger Games, and most recently Ocean’s 8 starring Sandra Bullock.
Jakubowski wrote the Black List feature screenplay 8-Bit Christmas which received both a PGA Award and Humanitas Prize nomination. His other credits include the screenplay for Assassination of a High School President,...

Have you ever watched a TV show and dreamt about the food being made on screen? We’re not talking about the professional chefs on Food Network or other cooking shows, that’s a conversation for another time, but rather the fictional characters that know their way around a kitchen and make you wish you could reach through the glass to taste what they’re making.
There’s no better time of year to fantasize about the TV characters that we would love to cook for us than Thanksgiving – the holiday dedicated to stuffing your face with delicious food all day long. Whether you opt for a traditional meal or avoid turkey entirely, most people will agree that the best part about Thanksgiving is the food, especially if you’re not the one cooking it.

One of the most acclaimed movies of 1998 is “Pleasantville,” starring Tobey Maguire, Reese Witherspoon, Jeff Daniels, William H. Macy and Joan Allen. Written and directed by four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross, the film is a creative fantasy drama about two 1990s teen siblings who are transported to a 1950s family sitcom and then slowly begin to transform the dull, colorless world into someplace better. Released 25 years ago in October 1998, “Pleasantville” only grossed about $50 million worldwide on a $60 million budget. But it did end up receiving three Oscar nominations. Read on for Gold Derby’s tribute to the “Pleasantville” 25th anniversary.
Most of the nation’s critics gave enthusiastic notices to “Pleasantville,” including Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times, who picked it as the second-best film of 1998 and wrote that it “is the kind of parable that encourages us to re-evaluate the good old days and take a fresh look at...

It’s the year of color/black-and-white hybrid films, led by such Best Cinematography Oscar contenders shot on Kodak film as “Oppenheimer” (Universal), “Poor Things” (Searchlight), “Asteroid City” (Focus Features), and “Maestro” (Netflix). In addition, there are two other contenders of interest: “The Zone of Interest” (A24) contains a series of striking monochromatic moments, while the black-and-white “El Conde” (Netflix) offers a lone color sequence.
They are part of a great stylistic tradition of intermingling color and black-and-white to evoke heightened states of mind in such films as “The Wizard of Oz,” “A Matter of Life and Death,” “Bonjour Tristesse,” “Wings of Desire,” “JFK,” “Natural Born Killers,” and “Pleasantville.” It can be real or imaginary, but the aesthetic differences help drive the narratives.
By contrast, “A Haunting in Venice” (20th Century), shot by Kenneth Branaugh’s go-to cinematographer, Haris Zambarloukos, utilizes conventional black-and-white flashbacks to recap a mysterious murder. This...

"Ocean's 8" graced the big screen more than five years ago and it seemed to promise more to come. However, a sequel has yet to materialize for reasons unknown. Boasting an all-star ensemble including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna, Awkwafina, and Mindy Kaling, the third installment of the popular "Ocean's" franchise proved its mettle at the box office, amassing a worldwide total of $297.8M, a figure roughly on par with "Ocean's Thirteen." Additionally, it garnered favorable reviews from critics. Mixed audience reactions resulted in only a 47% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes. Overall, the picture achieved success.

The truth of the Killer Milkman has been revealed, Riverdale fans.
After months of mysterious deaths and control from the adults, their secrets came crumbling down on Riverdale Season 7 Episode 18. A tidal wave of revelations and victories left this town shaking in its boots.
But with this being the third remaining episode of the series, did the reveal make its big landing? Or did it bubble over like curdled milk?
"Chapter One Hundred Thirty-Five: For A Better Tomorrow" was a jam-packed chapter that made up for lost time.
With so little time left in Riverdale Season 7, the momentum kicked into overdrive to unravel some long-standing mysteries. And in one case, a secret we didn't even know was happening under the surface.
Before we get into the three main stories, we need to call out the exciting style change within the episode.
Shifting scenes from color to black and white was very evocative.

Jeff Daniels is ready to tell his story. The actor, who has been in everything from “The Purple Rose of Cairo” to “Dumb and Dumber,” is readying his audio-only memoir, “Alive and Well Enough,” as a 12-part series for Audible, with the first season debuting in September (with a second season on the way).
According to the official release “Alive and Well Enough” “mixes storytelling, original music and performance, [and] is like nothing you have heard before.” Would it be too much to ask for several chapters devoted to the making of “Arachnophobia?”
“Audible is the only place where I get to do everything I do,” said Daniels in an official statement. “’Alive and Well Enough’ is an audio adventure of an accidental artist who one day looked up and realized he had a sense of humor, a passion for writing and stories to tell.”

Speedy Ortiz have unveiled “Ghostwriter,” another look at their upcoming album Rabbit Rabbit. Listen to the single below.
As a nu-metal homage, “Ghostwriter” finds Sadie Dupuis seething with rage — a reasonable reaction to this summer’s boiling heat, and what that means for the future ahead. Rather than breaking stuff, however, the bandleader tries to find a more productive release.
“While ‘Ghostwriter’ ruminates on the horrible realities that stoke my anger — in this song’s case, the death of our climate and the criminalization of environmental protesters — it’s also about trying to live with less rage in the day-to-day,” Dupuis explained in a statement. “And not always succeeding, but not getting mad about that, either. And sometimes directing that angry adrenaline toward positive actions.”
Dupuis continued, “My bandmates picked ‘Ghostwriter’ as a single, perhaps because it subtly nods to our unabashed love of nu-metal. It was really fun to...

In the span of just six months, between October 1998 and April 1999, three movies were released that, put together, helped establish Reese Witherspoon as one of Hollywood’s hottest new stars. First came Pleasantville, then Cruel Intentions, followed by Election. The first, Pleasantville, garnered great reviews and, although it wasn’t a box office hit, has managed to attract a following over the years. The movie was written and directed by Gary Ross, who, at that point, had two Oscar nominations for writing under his belt. When we spoke to Witherspoon about Pleasantville, she told us that working with Ross made the film an amazing experience for her. Reese Witherspoon is recalling riding out the rollercoaster of being a young Hollywood star under the male gaze.
The Hello Sunshine production company founder told Harper’s Bazaar how the infamous 1996 erotic thriller “Fear” — released when she was 20 — partly inspired her to shift her career to become an “agent for change” for women in Hollywood.
Witherspoon unpacked the iconic rollercoaster scene in which her character is fingered by the sinister love interest, played by Mark Wahlberg. Witherspoon noted that she requested a stunt double for the below-the-waist scenes; the film was directed by James Foley.
“I didn’t have control over it,” Witherspoon said. “It wasn’t explicit in the script that that’s what was going to happen, so that was something that I think the director thought of on his own and then asked me on set if I would do it, and I said no. It wasn’t a particularly great experience.

The ensemble cast of Nickelodeon's Salute Your Shorts has taken a variety of different career paths since the show ended. Debuting in 1991, the teen sitcom followed a group of campers at Camp Anawanna and the different adventures they get up to and the relationships they have over the course of a summer. The main star of the series changed over the course of its two seasons, but for the most part, the characters stayed the same. Bullies, preppies, and every other '90s stereotype came together to prank, fight, make friends, and be kids in a way that wasn't always depicted on television.
While the show only ran for two seasons, it gained a cult following and has a 75% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. Salute Your Shorts was part of a gambit by Nickelodeon to inch into the original programming space that The Disney Afternoon had taken when it...

It’s never easy for Cary on “The Other Two,” is it? The older Dubek brother (Drew Tarver) finds himself doing the yeoman’s work of television — playing a lawyer — on a long-running series called “Emily Overruled,” in Episode 4 of Season 3. But although the cast and crew of “Emily Overruled” delight in hitting their marks and going home at 5 p.m., Cary is convinced that acting should be much more and tries to inject some life into the colorless soundstage environs— a journey that required intense collaboration across multiple departments on “The Other Two.”
The show’s production design, camera, editing, and VFX teams all worked together alongside series showrunners Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider to create a rich visual metaphor for working on a long-running series: a black-and-white world in the style of “Pleasantville,” one that throws Cary off of his game until he can bring color and life...

The Malcolm in the Middle cast is filled with great actors – both sitcom staples and traditional dramatic performers in comedic roles – playing the show’s delightfully wacky characters. Created by Linwood Boomer, Malcolm in the Middle revolves around the titular child prodigy and the various misadventures he gets into with his dysfunctional family. From its single-camera shooting style to its regular fourth-wall breaks, Malcolm in the Middle made a few stylistic revolutions to the TV comedy format that went on to influence future sitcoms. Its dark, surreal comic sensibility was also a radical break from the family sitcom style.
A consistent ratings success and a hit with critics, Malcolm in the Middle ran for seven seasons on the Fox broadcast network. Throughout its run, the series won many prestigious awards – including a Peabody Award. While the writing was highly acclaimed, Malcolm in the Middle received particular praise for the work of its hilarious ensemble cast.
