Over the past 20 years or so, a surfeit of arthouse titles and an older demographic turning away from theaters have worn away at the sales of non-English language films.
Currently, cinema across the world, and especially arthouse, is stuck between a rock — global streamers often paying less, striking fewer worldwide deals and buying fewer finished movies — and a hard place: a pandemic-drained theatrical business for all but a few tentpoles.
“A few years ago, even if a film wasn’t perfect and had limited festival play, it sold at least a little,” says Film Factory founder Vicente Canales. “Now, either a film works, and sells pretty much the world, or it doesn’t work at all.”
Yet Spain’s top sales agents remain broadly optimistic about the future.

“Lost And Found” has closed first sales to Italy (Eagle Pictures), France (Kmbo) and Taiwan (Creative Century Entertainment) on thriller “Lost and Found,” starring Álvaro Morte, “Money Heist’s” Professor, and directed by “The Head” helmer Jorge Dorado.
The caliber of the distributors – Eagle Pictures is one of Italy’s most muscular mainstream buyers, for instance – and the movie’s high-profile talent package confirm “Lost and Found” as a preeminent title in Spain’s currently most exportable product line: Upscale ambitious thrillers with a social-issue underbelly.

Ari and Merlin are back in the follow-up and conclusion to King Arthur reimagining Once & Future: Sword in the Stars.
Once & Future, a space-set reimagining of Arthurian legend, was one of the most fun reading experiences I've had this year. Cori McCarthy and Amy Rose Capetta's young adult novel casts Arthur as teen girl named Ari living in a future where humanity has populated the galaxy. The story is highly-inclusive, action-packed, and ended on a killer cliffhanger.
Thankfully, McCarthy and Capetta aren't going to leave us hanging for long.

"I've done it this time." Gravitas Ventures has released an official Us trailer for an indie drama titled Lost & Found, one of those films where various interconnected stories intertwine showing how we're all linked in some way. This one takes place at/around a lost & found office of an Irish train station. All the segments are inspired by true stories, and share a theme of something lost or found and characters that come in and out of each other’s lives. The ensemble cast of Lost & Found includes Liam O Mochain (who's also writer and director), Norma Sheahan, Brendan Conroy, Aoibhin Garrihy, Liam Carney, Mary McEvoy, and Sean Flanagan. This looks particularly cheap & cheesy, moreso than most of these interconnecting films. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Liam O Mochain's Lost & Found, direct from YouTube: Lost & Found is 7 interconnecting stories set in and around...

Dua Lipa rode a track from her self-titled debut album to the best new artist award, winning over Grammy voters with her New Rules for dealing with an unfaithful lover.
The unlikely duo of Bob Newhart and Alessia Cara presented the award. Newhart won Best New Artist for a 1961 comedy album, while Cara won the award last year. She told the comedian that her great-grandmother had all his albums, with Newhart feigning outrage as she kept upping the age of her relatives who enjoyed his work.
Less playful were remarks from the category winner, as Lipa threw some shade at outgoing pesident Neil Portnow. “I guess we really stepped it up this year,” Lipa said, a reference to the much-criticized comments by former Recording Academy President Neil Portnow, who announced his plan to leave the job after his comments last year about the dearth of female nominees were characterized as clumsy at best,...

(L-r) Andrew Goldsmith, Lucy Hayes and Bradley Slabe.
Bradley Slabe, the co-director with Andrew Goldsmith of the Academy Award-shortlisted animated short Lost & Found, looks set for a major career boost after securing representation in the Us.
The writer-director signed with Los Angeles-based Verve after being introduced to the talent and literary agency by Jonathan Hludzinski, Animal Logic’s senior VP, production.
On the same trip to La he met with four management companies and is yet to decide which one to take on. “My dream is to create my own content but Verve has showed me the IP properties on their roster and asked me which ones I’d like to pitch for,” he tells If.
Slabe, Goldsmith and producer Lucy Hayes are keen to develop a TV series spin-off of Lost & Found, which would look at the community of knitted creatures before their ranks were thinned to two.

Though never quite as celebrated or well known as their feature-length counterparts, Pixar’s short films have been beloved since “Tin Toy” won the animation studio its first Academy Award in 1989. Often paired with features — a tradition dating back to “Geri’s Game” playing before “A Bug’s Life” — they feature everything from singing volcanoes to little birds confronting their fear of water. Pixar’s most recent short, “Bao,” was coupled with “Incredibles 2” and is now free to watch on YouTube. Do so below if you’re so inclined, but make taste: Today is the last day it’s available.
If you haven’t seen it, here’s the premise: “In ‘Bao,’ an aging Chinese mom suffering from empty nest syndrome gets another chance at motherhood when one of her dumplings springs to life as a lively, giggly dumpling boy. Mom excitedly welcomes this new bundle of joy into her life,...

With Christmas around the corner, this is the last official If newsletter for 2018.
It’s been our pleasure to report on a busy year, which saw Australian films perform respectably at the box office despite a crowded market and often limited P&A spend. Peter Rabbit, Ladies in Black and Breath were all commercial hits. Screen Australia’s Indigenous department turned 25, and stories from Indigenous filmmakers – like Sweet Country and Mystery Road – dominated the year, capturing both audiences and acclaim. In TV, shows like Mr Inbetween and Harrow resonated internationally. Our emerging filmmakers also speak to a bright future, with Charles Williams’ All These Creatures winning the Cannes Film Festival Short Film Palme d’Or, and Andrew Goldsmith and Bradley Slabe’s short animation Lost & Found shortlisted for an Oscar just today.

One of the popular hits at the second annual Animation Is Film Festival, “Mirai,” from famed Japanese director Mamoru Hosoda (who was admitted into the Academy this year), could deliver GKids’ 11th feature nomination.
“Mirai” marks Hosoda’s most personal movie yet about family. The enchanting, time-traveling fantasy about a four-year-old boy jealous of his baby sister is also unique for animation. “The story is about a secret garden showing the secrets of their family, and that was inspired by western children’s literature,” said Hosoda.
“We learn about the family tree through different methods,” he added. “On the other hand, unlike children’s stories, it’s not a fable with a lesson to be learned, other than children understanding the importance of experiencing family.”
“Mirai” (named for the sister) was inspired by personal experience. When Hosoda and his wife first brought home their newborn, the three-year-old son gave his sister a suspicious look.

Jorja Smith just wrapped a sold-out show at Chicago’s 1,300-capacity Thalia Hall, but she still has work to do. The 21-year-old London singer takes a seat backstage as her hairdresser appears and begins to meticulously braid each strand of Smith’s hair into tight knots – an eight-hour process that has been on and off throughout the day. “But it’s so worth it!” Smith says, reclining and smiling, holding strands of both real and fake hair waiting to be weaved in.

Jorja Smith is a precociously and prodigiously talented young Brit whose voice shows a nuance and maturity beyond that of most singers, let alone ones who turn 21 on Monday. She’s duetted with both Drake and Kendrick Lamar and opened for Bruno Mars on a five-week arena tour last year, yet she’s just now releasing her first album.
It was worth the wait: “Lost & Found” could make her the breakout star of the year. It’s a combination of classic and contemporary sounds, mixing Amy Winehouse, Sade and a little bit of “Baduizm” in a way that also fits alongside the hip-hop-informed R&B songstresses of the few years, but Smith’s distinctive voice and the album’s mid-tempo beats and spare, simple hooks set it apart. And while the music occasionally drifts into a Sam Smithian gilt frame or Jill Scott-ish jazz-lite chill, it’s her...
