  • Beware this comedy isn't palatable to all taste, but after watched it firstly on TV cable and stayed disoriented for a while, such foolishness, anyhow it was so fresh and inventive, an anti-hero character, who have countless bad behaviors, drunkard, racist, disgusting, filthy, obscene, we can thing the worst thing that he will be fits perfectly, however he hooked the audience in such shallow ground, Torrente is fantastic and deliberately bad to catch us toward him, in fact the viewers in such environment don't mind anymore, it's just a black comedy, we realize that it is a farce, then who care what's coming to next, so Santiago Segura conceived a harmless, but appealing character, in fact amazed us entirely, even politically incorrect to nowadays patterns, great box office in Spain that spread to the world!!!

    Resume:

    First watch: 2009 / How many: 2 / Source: Cable TV-DVD / Rating: 7.5
  • Torrente, a useless medium aged man, overweight, coward and ugly. He has a dream of being a police, and he actually pretends to be one. At times, it does reflect what the real policemen do. Always be there, at the end of any incident.

Rafi is his friend, a action movie freak who is living with his mum and cousin Amparito.

Torrente and Rafi will be patrolling Madrid and they get involve in real gun shooting, as they meet drug traffickers and other undesirable human beings.

Highly recommended to have nice laughing time. Nice watch and very funny, one of the best comedies in the Spanish movie industry :)
  • This film is awfully fun if you like the crazy comedies in style of John Waters, or films like the amazing Ettore Scola's "Brutti, sporchi e cattivi" or "Dumb and dumber" for that matter. Bad taste comedies, that is. And this film is up there among the finest.

A lot of other great comedies come to mind while watching this. If you like these kind of films, I'll also highly recommend the brilliant films "One night at McCools", "Seven psychopaths", "Drowning Mona" and "What's up, Doc?" Or the "Airplane-movies". I simply love these kind of stupidly funny films.

What makes this stand out is the fabulous supporting actors roles, more than the main role. The film is filled with passages you immediately want to see again. Now, if that isn't a sign of a good crazy comedy, I don't know.

Sure, it filthy, racist, disgusting and insulting, but it is as stupid as they come. The Seat- driving Commissionaire Torrente is really the dumb arm of the law.

Recommended for a good laugh if you are not if the easily offended.
  • This was movie of the year in Spain in 1998 following Ulloas success with Airbag the year before. It's about a truly revolting cop in Madrid. He's a sexist, egotistical, dirty pig. There are some memorable scenes in the film and it's quite funny if you don't have any problems with political correctness. It's probably more fun to a Spanish audience who get the jokes about Atlético Madrid fans, "in" expressions and other national references. A Spanish viewer can also appreciate all the cameos. Some of Spain's most renowned actors appear in little parts and add an extra twist to it all. The pace of the movie is fast and there are no dull moments. Go and see it if you can but have a couple of beers before you go.
  • Drink a lot of beer before you watch this movie. I don't get why it was the Spanish movie of the year, cause the humor is kind of 'out there'. But it's good laugh after a few beer! The story is kind of predictable as well.
  • First entry in ¨Torrente series¨ starred by the most grotesque detective and well played by Santiago Segura, he is a real private dick , a poster child for police corruption . Featuring politically incorrect private detective Torrente (Santiago Segura) , he is a macho man , lazy , rude , drunkard , Athletic fan , caring only about protecting and serving himself , here he fights against the oriental mafia in Madrid and patrolling the city looking for delinquents . Despite that, he still manages to get the job done . Torrente follows the exploits of Jose Luis Torrente , a Bad Santa of the police force , a peculiar and fatty man , being a ¨El Fari¨ fan . Torrente was rejected from police duty and he has returned to private investigation . He lives in a rotten flat with his wheelchair-bound daddy (Tony Leblanc) , whom he treats quite badly and wipes out of the money he had gained in begging . One day, in his decrepit slum appears a new family of neighbours move in , and the gorgeous young , Amparito (Neus Asensi) , catches his eye . Cheesy Torrente becomes a good friend Rafi (Javier Camera) , to get closer to her . Rafi is a naive young who loves action movies , guns and imitates Robert De Niro's Taxi driver . Later on , the botcher dirty private eye , being helped by Rafi, her nerdy neighbour and a group of geeks , all of them attempt to detain the local Mafia . In one of his cases he discovers the illegalities and irregularities of a powerful drug lord (Espartaco Santoni) and gets involved in the middle of a nasty's plot to introduce lots of drug in the city . As we find our anti-hero in a delicate situation but he can count on to help him some people , as Rafi and his equally geek friends ; one of them results to be a Karate man , Bruce Lee/Mark Dacascos enthusiast , using Shuriken and other Ninja weapons .

This is 1º installment in Torrente series . These films are made to entertain , and this movie , especially for a good time and a nice entertainment . "Torrente" is a passable and unapologetic dark comedy with great special effects , it has several funny and hilarious scenes and quite successful action scenes with persecution , car crashes and many other things . The picture contains thrills , noisy action , tongue-in-cheek , grotesque situations and above all , humor . Although there are also nudism , bad-mouthed language , bad taste jokes and profanities . Torrente 2 is written, directed, produced and stars Segura, whose production house Amiguetes Entertainment produced the film , UIP holds Spanish distribution rights . The screenplay is absurd as well as crazy , just what makes laugh a lot , that the character "Torrente" a very slutty , clumsy , sexist , Machista , extreme-right-wing , on a real person is despicable , being not adequate , but this is a film that satirizes all this and that just means he's a pathetic character , though he also has his unsettling charms . Here Torrente discovers that a band of drug traffickers are operating in a nearby Chinese restaurant and along the way , he falls in love for sexy Neus Asensi . This first Torrente, which set box office records in its day, took $707,000 and Torrente 2 grossed more than €22 million in 2001 . The film contains many cameos of famous people, familiar faces such as Javier Bardem , Carlos Bardem , Chus Lampreave , Tony Leblanc , Antonio De La Torre , Luis Manquiña , Espartaco Santoni , El Gran Wyoming , Daniel Monzón , Mariola Fuentes , Pablo Carbonell , Manuel Tafalle , Luis Cuenca ,among others . The cameos are very amusing and fun and there are lots of laughters and jokes . The movie contains a colorful and adequate cinematography by Carles Gusi . Thrilling as well as appropriate musical score by Roque Baños . Santiago Segura dares to make films with total entertainment and bemusement . And "Torrente " is pure eschatological fun , it is 90 and some minutes of fun and laughters . It is a commendable effort by Santiago Segura to make a film like this . Few directors are able to achieve results as ¨Torrente¨ , the biggest box-office in Spain until ¨8 Apellidos Vascos¨. This film will not disappoint Santiago Segura fans.

The first outing was this ¨Torrente El Brazo Tonto De La Ley¨ , being followed by "Torrente 2: Mission in Marbella", with Juanito Navarro , Jose Luis Lopez Vazquez , Paloma Cela , Santi Millan , Jose Mota , Pablo Carbonel ,among others ; ¨Torrente 3 El Protector¨ in which the horrendous Spanish detective becomes a bodyguard , being performed by José Mota , Javier Gutiérrez , Carlos Latre , Yvonne Sciò , Eduardo García , Fabio Testi ; ¨Torrente 4 Lethal crisis¨ with Carlos Areces , Kiko Rivera , Javier Gutiérrez , Fernando Esteso and ¨Torrente V: Misión Eurovegas¨ with Alec Baldwin , Anna Simon ,Neus Asensi , Pablo Motos , Chus Lampreave ,Andrés Pajares . The movies were written by, directed by and starred popular Spanish comedian-director Santiago Segura and is getting the remake treatment from New Line Cinema ; all of them were produced by Andres Vicente Gomez, who exec produced the Academy Award-winning Belle Epoque
  • Jaw-droppingly hilarious from beginning to end, the brilliant Santiago Segura delivers one of the funniest films ever made about an unbelievably likable racist, homophobic, misogynistic, gloriously non-PC, ex-cop.

You really have to see it to truly appreciate its unique sense of lusty invention and bravura staging.

Segura's Torrente is a filthy, fat bastard who partners with an insufferable nerd to crack a drug smuggling operation. But the plot merely provides Segura with a framework for his non-stop barrage of brilliant gags and set pieces.

Torrente's attempt to seduce his nerd partner's slutty sister is hilarious, as are Torrente's off-the-cuff comments about all women wanting it up the rear and his lecture on how washing your hands before you take a leak shows greater respect for your penis.

There are so many gems in this movie it's impossible to catalog them all. Another corker, which occurs near the film's climax, has the kidnapped slut sister dropping to her knees to enthusiastically fellate her captor. When the nerd expresses concern that his sister is being "forced" to have oral sex, Torrente quips: "I don't think she's being forced too hard."

The sequel, while still very funny, doesn't have the rough, crude edge of the original.

    Sublime!

This is one of the worst comedies I have ever encountered. It brings nothing new, it's like to take all bad Spanish humor films (just the bad ones) and to mix them together. The problem lays in the plot, interpretation and camera are OK. The film is full of clichés and easy jokes, it ridicules the typical fascist, nostalgic of Franco's era, but so in a way that I could even feel compassion and solidarity to him. The whole film is predictable. This is a film to avoid.
  • This movie is a killer! One of the funniest ever! If you like Farelly brothers's work, this will overpass everything they've done by far! Great stuff! If you see this film once you will feel that you need to see it at least one more time! Of course, you'll need to have the stomach for this kind of jokes! The other characters, Rafi and his two friends are also extremely funny! But cannot overpass Torente! Also, you have to see the sequel! An absolute killer!! I laughed so hard at this movie, that I actually cried!!! These friends of his are so stupid and cheesy, that almost all the parts with them will make your laughter hard to take! As I said, when you'll think you had enough, it comes back, bigger, longer and uncut! If you like humor and especially black and somewhat racist and apparently dumb humor, it's a must! Go see it dudes! It's all worth!
  • Ettore Scola had done a great movie about people living in slums. It was farcical and many liked it, I liked most of it but couldn't find it delicious because of its worst moments of ugly sordid reality. To me this feels sick to get a kick out of this.

Torrente goes full throttle on the dumb and dirty reality that some might find great fun. It had some great laughs I admit, but for me these laughs - scattered within the cheap ludicrous grins - were the most natural, low-fat, jokes. Fortunately there are no fart or puke jokes but, hey, Torrente is a big farting load of puke all the same.

And even if I admit this stuff is not for me I can still say that a movie, even a not-the-least-serious movie, that brings in nice little supporting characters to kill them the next minute, just for fun, is plain wrong. That's why I won't pinpoint the good things in Torrente. Basically, Outrageous Fun can be roaringly funny but it takes more than piling up dirty jokes and cheap tricks.

This guy (Torrente) is an ex-cop, El Fary and Altético Madrid fan. This movie (and the whole Torrente-saga) is about stupid and bizarre characters and they are very funny, you can trust in me. He is very fumbler and his "friends" are also flumbers. He has a few mates like Rafi who wants to be a cop, Amparito is a slag but somehow she likes Torrente('s carrot), Malaguita is his informer who can't give a true information for the Spanish super cop and... there are a few more unbelievable characters but I don't really want to spoil the whole movie. Overall, this film is an excellent action-comedy and you will laugh the whole approximately 97 minutes. Watch it! My opinion: 10 out of 10!
  • Being Spanish as I am I find this movie amazingly funny (i've watched it a million times :P). But I must admit it might not be as funny for everyone, if you're not Spanish you'll probably find it quite stupid and boring, why? Because many of the jokes are referred to things everyone in Spain knows about but people from other parts of the world don't, some of the characters are quite... infamous in Spain and that makes them funny... and many other details as these. Torrente is something of a Spanish Homer Simpson / Peter Griffin, and everyone finds those characters funny because everyone knows quite a lot about the US and American celebrities, but with Spain... I'd say not.
  • To this day, this is one of the best movie ever. I remember watching it in 2000 on TV,I was blown away how good it was. Only first movie. 2nd,3rd or 4th were bad. But, watchable.

Torrente is truly one of the most despicable, disgustingly selfish persons ever. Even than, he is somehow likebable. Mostly because there are even worse characters in franchise.

Torrente, to be honest is closer to be villain rather then a hero. He becomes hero almost identical like Travis Bickle. He saves a girl only because his selfish motives.

Santiago Segura creates one of the most epic character ever on small screens.

    My total reccomandation.
  • Spanish auteur Santiago Segura, who wrote, directed and stars in this film, creates a decent if overly dark comedy about corruption. Segura claims to be a member of the Madrid police force, but his outlandish behavior – he drinks before going on duty and forces his wheelchair-bound father to beg to increase his income – hardly demonstrates the qualities required of a representative of the law. When sleazy nymphomaniac Neus Asensi moves in next door, he befriends her cousin, extremely nerdy Javier Cámara. When Segura and his new sidekick accidentally discover a drug ring run through a Chinese restaurant, Cámara calls in his loser friends to help. As the cast gets significantly reduced in a flurry of bullets and tragedy, Segura concludes the film with a few plot twists and the unsettling suggestion that sometimes people are as bad as they seem. An inherently unfunny story gets injected with a dose of morbid wit through Segura's approach to the characters. His attitude toward humanity appears quite dark. Everyone in the film either takes advantage of others or finds himself exploited, and no one seems to wind up punished for their wrongdoings. True, a number of maniacal drug dealers get offed, but so do all of Cámara's awkward, endearing friends. Segura follows few conventions in his portrayal of the world of his deluded cop. Chus Lampreave, familiar from several of Pedro Almodóvar's films, has a nice role as Cámara's mother.

A bull's eye. A sarcastic rock-bottom insight into the worst of Franco's inheritance. It's like a Quijote of modern Spain. As its director commented himself `All Spaniards have a Torrente inside, the more vigorous that Torrente is, the worst we are'. Just those who fear their inner Torrente won't take advantage of this therapeutic movie.
  • The best comedy ever made in Spain. Every Santiago Segura fan will enjoy it. Maybe you'll miss a few details if you're not related with Spanish society and culture because the movie is an ironic critic to the old-fashioned fascists that still live in Spain, people who still adore Francisco Franco and similar freaks. If you have an open mind and want to laugh hysterically don't miss it
  • Whether or not you have ever lived in Madrid, this movie is worth seeing. From putting his father out on the street to beg to stealing old ladies' panties, Torrente shows his true colors as a scumbag all the way through. He is loyal to no one except himself.

Some of the humor is very typically Madrid, such as the making fun of Catalonians and the continual support the fans give of the Athlético de Madrid soccer team. Even so, the English subtitles on this movie are actually quite good - I was impressed how they translated some unique Spanish slang.

Film critics, on the whole, did not favor this movie. This movie is not a serious film, people, so just get ready for raunchy laughs.

Also, don't forget to see Torrente 2: Misión in Marbella. Se pasa aún más.
  • Santiago Segura has crafted a hyperbolical picture of a delirious cop. He is the creator of Torrente, a loser who wants to gain respectability. The movie is plenty of memorable gags and the dialogs are really incredible. It can be disgusting for people who act and think politically correct, because Santiago Segura shows, with cunning humor, the worst of the present society. This is a movie to see with an open mind. Don't take seriously the exaggerated cliches, and enjoy the film!

    9/10
    Great
European humor far better than American, greetings from serbia
  • Lets straight up something first .. you must judge a movie by its purpose, you know, you cannot criticize badly a movie like Dumb & Dumber because its silly, why? Because it is suppose to!! So said that.. Torrente, El Brazo Tonto De La Ley is an awesome, stomach akin laughter comedy, it is exactly what it should be, it is stupid, but intelligent, silly, but real. Chocking and nasty, filthy and exciting. Indeed very nationalistic, so a few jokes might not make sense for many people outside of Spain, but anyway, if u are just a bit globalized ..u will not mind and will laugh anyway. I just cannot see any single problem within. The roll of Torrent is perfectly represented by this superb actor that is Santiago Segura, the constant naiveness inherit the relationships and social disgrace transformed into pure laughter is genius! I cannot see how any open minded intelligent person who enjoys fast and furious comedy could not like this one.

  • Just bought and seen the dvd (dirt cheap) though I never heard of it. Had the same experience with works like Almodovar (Todo Sobre Mi madre, Carne Tremular) and Amenabar (Abre Los Ojos). None of them were disappointing (understatement). First I thought It would be a movie like Bad Lieutenant , this time on too much sangria. From the right beginning really funny and a-moral. But hey, it turned out to be a true movie after all.
  • A great box-office hit in spain. Full of crazy gags ignoring all decency, showing the worst part of the perfect antihero.

I enjoyed all the film but specially the first half where i would say the film can be highly respectable for filmcritic standards, after that the plot takes the film to a kind of pathetic behaviour and becomes slightly senseless without need. In my opinion the great Santiago had not needed add this plot-action, that makes the film look like the kind of films he is partially laughing at.

Great gag comedy, about someones (everybodies) silly self-ideas y the land of the bull.
  • Great comic filmmaking. Grotesquery and comedia del arte at its finest.
