Before the filming of an outdoor scene by the river, a gaffer was fixing the lights and noticed something floating by in the river. It was a dead body. The police were called and when they arrived, they anchored it to the dock, out of sight of the camera. They removed it after the scene was shot.

Neve Campbell never appears naked in any sex scenes (even in the Unrated version) because she has a no-nudity clause written into her contract. She would, however, go on to appear nude in When Will I Be Loved (2004).

In an interview with Maxim magazine, Kevin Bacon noted that he has a no-nudity clause in his contract, and that he was a producer of the movie, so technically he could have sued himself.

According to Neve Campbell in an interview for Entertainment Weekly at the time of the film's release, she, Denise Richards, and Matt Dillon all got slightly drunk on tequila in order to get past the nervousness of doing the three-way love scene.

Robert Downey, Jr. was originally cast as Sam Lombardo, but dropped out.

Director John McNaughton says he deleted a scene that would have shown Matt Dillon and Kevin Bacon showering together, as it was gratuitous.

Prior to filming, Denise Richards had a corrective breast implant procedure, after she had a rushed breast procedure at age nineteen, but the surgeon again gave her larger implants than expected.

Even though Suzie and Kelly's character's were supposed to be in High School, Neve Campbell was 25 and Denise Richards was 27.

Despite prominent billing, Bill Murray only gets about twenty minutes of screentime.

In the original draft of the screenplay, the object Kelly is holding underneath the towel, in the threesome scene, wasn't a bottle of champagne, as seen in the film, but a novelty penis.

The first time Kevin Bacon was a producer on a film.

The bar where Matt Dillon's character meets Kevin Bacon's character is called "Smiling Jack's Fishing Club". In the movie A Few Good Men (1992), Cruise's character addresses Bacon's character as "Smiling Jack Ross."

In the three-way scene in the original version of the screenplay, when Suzie removes her tank-top, she has a couple of tattoos and a pierced nipple.

Almost all the high school sequences, including the pool scenes, were filmed at Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove, Florida.

Denise Richard's only nude scene in a feature film. Years later after the film's release she appeared in the December 2004 issue of Playboy Magazine in a nude pictorial and during the filming of Denise Richards Its Complicated where she had a brief topless scene while sunbathing.

Tara Reid auditioned for the part of Kelly Van Ryan.

Denise Richards and Jennifer Taylor would both later appear on Two and a Half Men (2003) as Charlie's girlfriends.

Even though the high school scenes are filmed at Ransom Everglades, the lacrosse team showed isn't from that school. The producers thought that the Ransom team wasn't good enough, so the Palmetto lacrosse team was used.

On the back of the chapter insert of the U.S. DVD, it says "Neve Campbell is a Scream!" this is a direct reference to her movie Scream (1996).

This original script provides some additional backstory for many of the characters, in particular giving both Sam and Kelly more reason to get involved in the conspiracy. Unfortunately, this backstory was cut from the final version of the film.

Both Matt Dillon and Denise Richards, are left-handed.

Robert Wagner starred in the film A Kiss Before Dying (1956). Matt Dillon starred in the remake of that film A Kiss Before Dying (1991).

The same year, Matt Dillon also starred with W. Earl Brown in There's Something About Mary (1998). Both Neve Campbell and Brown previously appeared together in Scream (1996).

Matt Dillon would later star in another crime film, (a comedy) where he seduces the film's leading lady. That film was One Night at McCool's (2001).

Sandra McCoy, who later played Elena Sandoval in the third film, would appear in an episode of Two and a Half Men (2003), where she shared a scene with Denise Richards' future husband Charlie Sheen. Richards herself would appear in the sitcom.

Eduardo Yáñez and Marc Macaulay both later starred in The Punisher (2004).

Denise Richards declined to use a body double for the threesome scene.

When Lombardo talks to Art Maddox about his fishing photograph, Lombardo tells Maddox that the fish in the photo is a barracuda and that it is "poisonous and it'll kill you.", to which Maddox replies, "I could say that about most of the girls you date." It is a foreshadowing of Sam's death.

Suzie's ulterior motive for using Sam Lombardo and Kelly to steal Sandra van Ryan's money was revealed in a scene in the Unrated Version that was cut from the theatrical release. Susie's grandmother Ruby (Carrie Snodgress) reveals to Detective Gloria Perez (Daphne Rubin-Vega) that Susie is actually Sandra van Ryan's half-sister and Kelly's aunt, because Kelly's grandfather had a relationship with Suzie's mother and got her pregnant. But, after he abandoned Suzie and her mother, the mother drank herself to death. With this revelation, this means that Suzie is the rightful heiress to Sandra Van Ryan's wealth in money, not Kelly, and Kelly and Suzie have technically committed incest.

Kelly skeet-shooting in the scene which Sandra talks to Lombardo on the telephone foreshadows Kelly's death.
