With a string of mysterious murders at its center, "The Acolyte" is set to be the "Star Wars" equivalent of detective fiction -- although the show's first trailer also makes it clear that it won't forfeit any action for the sake of its mysteries. That first look features a martial arts-inspired face-off, a Force-fueled knife fight, and a forest showdown that begins with an ominous red lightsaber cutting through the trees.
According to series star Dafne Keen, who spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the new show earlier this month, "The Acolyte" isn't just trying to match the action sequences of past "Star Wars" shows; it's trying to beat them. "It was very much: We want to top the Darth Maul fight — the most iconic fight, I think, in the 'Star Wars' cinematic universe," Keen told EW. There's a good reason the climactic Darth Maul battle is a reference point for...

With gripping storylines, epic fight scenes, and envious lightsabers, the Star Wars franchise turned into a billion-dollar Hollywood project, which is now set to premiere its latest live-action Disney+ entry, The Acolyte, on June 4. The upcoming show has created a lot of excitement as it is set to feature the first on-screen look at the High Republic era.

But while The Acolyte boasts an epic storyline and impressive cast of Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Dafne Keen, and Jodie Turner-Smith, the show mainly attracted audiences with its promising action sequences on display in the recently released trailer. The show even made a bold claim of featuring the best lightsaber battle in franchise history, toppling Darth Maul’s fight.

The upcoming Star Wars series The Acolyte promises plenty of martial-arts-inspired action and a climactic lightsaber battle. The makers of the show recently mentioned that the team aimed to compete with Darth Maul’s legendary battle with Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn in Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and called it the best lightsaber battle in Star Wars history.
But is it? The franchise has seen numerous lightsaber battles across media, with fan getting their first taste of the trope in Star Wars: A New Hope. While the original trilogy is still considered to be the best of the films released to date, the lightsaber battles seem to have improved since then. The prequel trilogy’s climactic showdown between Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker definitely has a higher ground in the category.

Sofia Coppola’s distinguished career as a screenwriter and director came much later. Well before her fame with several acclaimed titles including The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation, she made an unexpected Star Wars debut.

Not everyone anticipated that George Lucas’ space opera, which tells the story of characters’ adventures from ‘A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away’, would even be a hit before it was released in 1977. Significantly, even after more than 40 years, Star Wars would continue to rank among the most celebrated franchises in popular culture.
For a long time, fans have been enthralled by Star Wars movies; nevertheless, not every flick in the franchise has been well-received by critics or has done well at the box office. There have been highs and lows, which is pretty much inevitable, even though the best of the movies are undeniably classics.

With Dune: Part Two and Civil War in theaters, it’s already been a great year for sci-fi, and that doesn’t even count goofball flicks like Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, or any other movies with the word “empire” in the title. Sure, it’s not all perfect. Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson, has been pulled from the release schedule and there’s no way that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will release this year. But overall, 2024 has been a strong start for sci-fi movies.
Even better, 2024 isn’t even halfway done. Per tradition, Den of Geek has put together a list of the big sci-fi movies heading your way for the rest of the year. This list doesn’t include upcoming sci-fi movies without firm release dates, but it will when they are announced. It will also be updated to add any movies we may have missed,...

Ewan McGregor is a Scottish actor who is better known to the world by the character he plays in the world-famous Star Wars franchise. Portraying the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi since 1999 in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, McGregor has been a much-loved character.
With the actor experiencing stardom, he didn’t think much of it at that time. Working alongside Hayden Christensen (who portrayed the role of Anakin Skywalker), the two became quite good friends. So good that when McGregor got the opportunity to work with Christensen again, he broke down in tears!

One of the most famous scenes in the Star Wars film saga almost didn’t happen at all. Although the movie was always going to end with Anakin Skywalker losing a few limbs, the stunt team behind Prequel Trilogy closer originally choreographed a different climax for Revenge of the Sith‘s final duel between brothers. In fact, an earlier version of the fight on Mustafar didn’t have Obi-Wan getting the high ground on Anakin at all; there was no cocky last leap from young Skywalker to seal his fate.
As Revenge of the Sith stunt coordinator Nick Gillard explained to Empire magazine, “Originally, they both land on the side of the lava flow and immediately start fighting. Anakin disarms Obi and grabs him by the throat. He’s about to chop his head off, but Obi sucks the lightsaber into his hand in a defensive move to try and block it,...

Get ready to play a very different kind of Easter egg hunt with the new "Star Wars" series "The Acolyte" (watch the trailer here). Leslye Headland's upcoming series takes place 100 years before "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace," which should come as a soothing balm to those who've been waiting for the franchise to move far (far) away from the Skywalker Saga and explore other periods of "Star Wars" history in live-action. That being the case, the real test here won't be seeing how many references or nods to other "Star Wars" projects you can spot; it will be figuring out where you've previously seen the show's crackerjack actors.
With the exceptions of "The Matrix" icon Carrie-Anne Moss and up-and-coming whipper-snappers Amandla Stenberg ("Bodies Bodies Bodies") and Dafne Keen ("His Dark Materials"), much of the "Acolyte" cast is composed of "Hey, I know them!" type character actors.

Carrie-Anne Moss will make the leap from The Matrix to Star Wars with The Acolyte, the upcoming live-action series set to be released on Disney+ this summer. The actress plays Jedi Master Indara, and as we’ve seen in the trailer, she’s adept at wielding a lightsaber as well as using “Force-fu,” which naturally makes one think of Trinity.
According to The Acolyte creator Leslye Headland, that connection with Trinity is very much intentional as she told Empire that Master Indara was “very much inspired” by Carrie-Anne Moss’ iconic Matrix character. “I personally wanted to see someone who had the highest status you could imagine in a Force-fu fight – somebody that would come in and you immediately would be like, ‘Oh, that’s the most powerful Jedi in the room.’ And that’s Trinity,” Headland explained.

The Acolyte’s Vernestra Rwoh Has ‘Been Through Some Shit’ After The High Republic Novels – Exclusive
For the most part, The Acolyte is set to be an entirely new Star Wars experience. It’s set in an unexplored era, 100 years prior to The Phantom Menace; it has an entirely new cast of Jedi; its mystery plot is being kept tightly under wraps. But for fans of The High Republic novels – set 100 years before The Acolyte – there’ll be a familiar face. Rebecca Henderson is playing Vernestra Rwoh – a High Republic character who, in the books, is a prodigious young Jedi Knight who passed the trials at 15, and soon finds herself facing the threat of the marauding Nihil. In The Acolyte, the green-skinned Mirialan is now 116 years old – and a fully-fledged Jedi Master based in the temple on Coruscant.
The Acolyte creator Leslye Headland is thrilled to have Rwoh be part of her series. “I absolutely love Vernestra. You can tell, because I cast my wife,” she laughs while speaking to Empire.

The Universal Monsters brand has had a rather mixed reception over the past 14 years or so. The 2010 remake of The Wolfman was a bomb, 2014’s Dracula Untold underperformed and the 2017 remake of The Mummy killed off the Dark Universe before it even began. However, the 2020 interpretation of The Invisible Man was rather well received and financially successful.
Now, as Universal attempts to reinvigorate the brand with a 2024 The Wolfman film and the Dark Universe section at Epic Universe, a beloved classic will be returning to theaters for its 25th Anniversary. The 1999 versions of The Mummy will be returning to the big screen this April in partnership with AMC.

There will be minor spoilers for "Star Wars: The Living Force" by John Jackson Miller.
"Star Wars: The Living Force" is the latest novel released by Del Rey Worlds and Lucasfilm, carrying forward the legacy of the "Star Wars" universe. Set before the events of "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace," this novel sees Qui-Gon Jinn taking the council to task for the disarray in the universe. The Jedi are paying too much attention to the bigger picture of the Cosmic Force and ignoring the individuals in the galaxy and the whims of the Living Force.
As the Jedi are closing temples on far-flung worlds because the galaxy has only grown larger and their resources haven't expanded, Qui-Gon discovers that closing temples increases crime and reduces the quality of life in the systems where it's happening. The cast of the newest Star Wars live-action series, The Acolyte, has certainly turned heads. Set 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace, at the end of the High Republic era, The Acolyte follows a group of Jedi played by a who’s who of notable stars, including Squid Game‘s Lee Jung-jae as Master Sol and Logan‘s Dafne Keen as his padawan Jecki Lon. Amandla Stenberg (Bodies Bodies Bodies) adds quite a bit of ferocity as a former padawan named Mae who’s gone rogue.

While kept under wraps for what seemed like years, the “Star Wars” Lucasfilm series “The Acolyte” was finally revealed last month with the first trailer that pulled back the curtain on the series. Created by “Russian Doll” writer/director Leslye Headland, also known for raunchy R-rated comedies like “Bachelorette,” the trailer teased some of its influences, such as “The Phantom Menace”, noir-mysteries and little bit of “The Matrix”-style kung-fu action.

The Acolyte is a Star Wars project filled with mystery. For one, it’s an actual mystery series – set 100 years before The Phantom Menace, with a spate of Jedi murders prompting an investigation into the culprit behind those mysterious deaths. Then, there’s plenty of mystery surrounding Amandla Stenberg’s Mae – a shadowy assassin figure whose role in proceedings is being held tightly under wraps. Even the show’s title is something of a mystery: who, or what, even is ‘The Acolyte’?
As series creator Leslye Headland tells Empire, it’s a term that originates in Extended Universe lore – Legends novels which aren’t considered canon, but from which Star Wars creators often draw inspiration. “It’s a position, essentially, that someone is going to fulfil, or step into,” Headland hints in our world-exclusive cover feature. “We know with the Sith that there is a Master, we know that there is an Apprentice.

It’s long been a part of the Star Wars mythos, but something rarely depicted in live-action: go back before Order 66 and the events of the prequels, and the galaxy was once flooded with Jedi. The sight of lightsaber-wielders moving en masse was a major moment at the end of Episode II – Attack Of The Clones – but given that Palpatine and a nascent Vader bumped all the other Jedi off shortly after, it’s rarely been seen again. The Acolyte, though, is set to deliver exactly that – the new Star Wars series, from an original idea by Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland, is set 100 years before The Phantom Menace, at the end of the largely-peaceful High Republic era. And it’s a time simply stacked with Jedi.

Disney really wants to make their latest ‘Star Wars’ Disney+ show ‘The Acolyte’ stick. They are so desperate to do it that they are reportedly making a ‘first look’ part of the special 25th Anniversary screenings of ‘Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.‘
If you want to see the 25th-anniversary screening of the film over Star Wars Day weekend, you will have to watch ‘The Acolyte’ first look as well.
Steeped in Controversy
‘The Acolyte’ has been controversial since it was first announced in Variety before Disney even confirmed that it was true. Some saw the “leak” as a way to push this show through by releasing the genie so it’s harder to put it back in the bottle.
Another big part of the controversy is the showrunner herself, Leslye Headland, who was a personal assistant to Harvey Weinstein at one point. However, she has not been accused of anything that we know of.

There are not a lot of actors in Hollywood whose presence itself on-screen exudes badassery. Liam Neeson has carved a unique niche for himself in the film industry, where directors and producers look up to him for serious roles. From Schindler’s List to Batman Begins, the actor has carefully picked feathers for his cap that are a testament to his effervescent acting abilities.
However, he often goes offbeat and picks up projects that show off a different side to his demanding presence on the silver screen, like he is about to do in his upcoming The Naked Gun Reboot.

No one ever really leaves the galaxy far, far away. Liam Neeson’s Qui-Gon Jinn was the first character (chronologically) to master the art of a spiritual return from the grave (a spectacle known to fans as becoming a “Force ghost”) and the estate of Peter Cushing was the first to allow his character, Grand Moff Tarkin, to reappear thanks to creepy computer imaging in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” So, between the two, you can rest assured that as long as there will never be star peace, we’ll see Ewen McGregor back as Obi-Wan Kenobi is some kind of “Star Wars” project.

Ewan McGregor is sharing his thoughts on a potential return to the Star Wars universe!
The 53-year-old actor reprised his iconic role as the titular character of Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series in 2022.
Prior to that, he had portrayed Obi-Wan in each of the Star Wars prequel movies: 1999′s Episode I – The Phantom Menace, 2002′s Episode II – Attack of the Clones, and 2005′s Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.
Although Obi-Wan Kenobi was created as a limited series, there’s always a possibility that Ewan could return in another future Star Wars project.
The star discussed the matter in a recent interview.

Frank Herbert's "Dune" is one of the most influential science fiction books of all time. The original novel remains a groundbreaking story that draws inspiration from the hero's journey or monomyth, environmental science, politics, real history, and Arabic religion and Middle Eastern culture to deliver an unprecedented epic about the dangers of messianic leaders and the importance of ecology.
Ever since its initial publication in 1965, "Dune" has captivated all kinds of audiences, including hopeful producers and executives eager to adapt the story of Paul Atreides and his rise to power into a cinematic event. For a long time, filmmakers kept trying and failing to turn "Dune" into a movie, resulting in Herbert's book being labeled "unadaptable." Since then, however, there have been a handful of movie and TV adaptations, each of them highlighting different aspects of the original novel and its sequels.

It was going to be a difficult task to play Obi-Wan Kenobi after Alec Guinness’ incredible portrayal of the powerful Jedi but Ewan McGregor somehow managed to live up to the high expectations. After starring as the Jedi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, Ewan McGregor got to play the character yet again in a Disney+ miniseries named after Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope
After the success of the miniseries, fans were left wondering if Ewan McGregor would ever return to the Star Wars universe to play Obi-Wan Kenobi one more time. While it looks like a second season of the miniseries may not be possible, the actor seems more than hopeful that he is not done playing the character just yet.

The third and final season of "The Bad Batch" focuses on the intriguing mystery of why the Empire is so obsessed with something they call "M-Count" and how the clone Omega figures into their plan. Particularly strange is seeing this concept so integral to the show when, once upon a time, it was fans' the most maligned canon addition. Out of the many alien concepts in "Star Wars," and all the things George Lucas came up with — from the Jedi to the Wookies and lightsabers — midi-chlorians remains the most contentious. They are intelligent, microscopic life forms residing within the cells of every living organism in the universe.
It is the midi-chlorians that channel the Force, and allow their host access to it. Because midi-chlorians spring from, and are connected to the Wellspring of Life from which all life and the Force itself comes from, midi-chlorians are believed to be capable...

The 1950s saw a boom of science fiction stories focused on the concept of psionics. Authors took nascent studies of the brain and its potential to wild places, exploring what could happen if humanity was able to use 100% of our brain capacity and gained superpowers. Everyone from Frank Herbert to Isaac Asimov, James Blish, and many more tapped into this concept.
When it came time for George Lucas to pivot away from doing a "Flash Gordon" movie and instead come up with his own fictional universe with enough worldbuilding to sustain a prequel trilogy, he developed his own version of psionics and combined it with elements of several world religions. The result was the Jedi and the concept of The Force, which are integral to the "Star Wars" universe and the success of its films. These movies gave audiences a unique yet also familiar imagery of samurai wizard monks. The Jedi were instantly memorable,...

“Jar Jar Binks makes the Ewoks look like fucking Shaft.” – Tim Bisley, Spaced, “Change” (2001).
Reviews for The Phantom Menace were, it’s fair to say, mixed. Looking back on it, that’s understandable. It’s a mixed film. After a lot of excitement and hype for the return of the game-changing franchise, some anti-climax was inevitable. 133 minutes and countless midi-chlorians later, a sense of disappointment gave way to rage for some.
Attack of the Clones had an improved, if not stellar, critical reception and Revenge of the Sith continued this trend to be recognized as the best of the three. That said, despite the upward trajectory there was a sense that these films would never recover from their initial mauling and that their lasting legacy would be their failure to recapture the magic of the Original Trilogy in a sustained way.

The first trailer for Star Wars: The Acolyte dropped earlier this week, and according to Lucasfilm, it actually broke a major record, besting every trailer for The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka, but unfortunately, it also racked up quite a few dislikes on YouTube.
“The trailer for The Acolyte garnered 51.3 million views in its first 24 hours,” reads the Lucasfilm announcement. “This is a new digital-only record for any Lucasfilm Disney+ series, surpassing every trailer for The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka. We’re grateful for your support, and can’t wait for you to experience the series.“
As I write this, The Acolyte trailer has 166k likes on YouTube, but it also has over 365k dislikes. Yikes. A portion of these dislikes could be down to review bombing, but the trailer did receive a rather mixed response upon release.

The trailer for Star Wars: The Acolyte has finally dropped, and it once again whisks you away to a galaxy far away. Announced by Lucasfilm in 2020, it took the production four years to get off the ground, but it is finally here, and it looks good.
Like most Star Wars projects, The Acolyte has been the subject of many discussions and speculation over the years. One of the major topics was the period in which the show was set. The trailer offers an interesting peek into the lives of the Jedi, but the fandom is less than impressed, and the show has already hit a disappointing milestone.

Disney is giving us a blast from the past with its next entry in the Star Wars series, as showrunner Leslye Headland (Russian Doll) takes us back to the golden age of the High Republic. Going back further on the timeline than live-action Star Wars has before, The Acolyte takes place at the height of the Jedi Order’s power, 100 years before Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn blundered their trade negotiations in The Phantom Menace.
With a largely new cast, the first trailer for The Acolyte gave us a look at Amandla Stenberg‘s rogue warrior Mae, The Matrix’s Carrie-Anne Moss and Squid Game‘s Lee Jung-jae as Jedi Masters, and Solo’s Joonas Suotamo playing the Wookiee Jedi Kelnacca. But despite the many Jedi in the story, Headland has said that the show also tackles the story of the Sith and how they managed to infiltrate and corrupt the Republic and the Jedi Order.

Earlier in the week, Lucasfilm released the first trailer for The Acolyte, the first live-action series set during the High Republic era of Star Wars. The series was first announced in 2020 and is headed up by Leslye Headland. The series experienced multiple production delays and will now release on June 4th.
However, despite Lucasfilm trying to generate excitement for this long in development series the reaction hasn’t been the most positive. As of writing this article, the trailer on on the official Star Wars YouTube Channel has 215K Dislikes to 144K Likes.
Surprisingly, the video still has comments enabled and a number of disappointed fans are making their voices heard. Many of them make fun of the “Close your eyes, what do you see?” part of the trailer.
A good portion of the comments also reference Harvey Weinstein as the showrunner, Leslye Headland, was his personal assistant for a number of years.
