In keeping with the theme that the late 90s are a "new world" for the Webers, the main characters are named Adam and Eve. Other characters also have mythical names, such as Helen and Troy. The name Weber is German for "weaver," which may suggest the unusual way in which these characters' lives are woven together.
Adam, Age 11:
Calvin: It's a game, son. I can explain it pretty easily. See, there's a pitcher...
Adam, Age 11: Oh, like a painting.
Calvin: No, a pitch-er.
Adam, Age 11: Like one of mom's?
Calvin: No. There's a man who throws the ball to a man who has a bat.
Adam, Age 11: Oh! The nocturnal flying mammal?
Eve storms out of the house leaving the door open. Moments later, when she and Adam enter the house, she opens the door.
