In 2002, the German TV channel RTL II initially aired this series in its uncut form at afternoon, during the channel's childrens program. Despite the graphic violence in most episodes, the series still received the age certificate of 6. Later that year, following the school massacre in Erfurt, Germany, the youth protection law was revised drastically, which had an effect on TV programs of any kind as well. Because of this, RTL II edited most of the episodes, with the exception of the rather harmless ones, and aired them the following year. The editing even went so far that, in one instance, a knife sticking in the back of a victim was painted over. In 2016, German channel ProSieben MAXX was able to order the uncensored episodes.

The title Detective Conan was changed to Case Closed in the U.S. due to trademark issues on the name "Conan".
