Every year the race for the Oscar for best documentary feature gets more expensive and less inclusive.
The challenging doc marketplace favors a handful of big-name filmmakers commissioned to make one-off films or docuseries. During the last two years, directors of independently made docs, especially those tackling hard-hitting social issues, have been facing an uphill battle to secure distribution.
The major streaming services, who just a few years ago were spending millions to acquire indie fare, seem to no longer be interested in garnering titles out of festivals.
There have, of course, been exceptions. Matthew Heineman’s “American Symphony” sold to Netflix immediately after the film’s Telluride premiere in September, and HBO Documentary Films/Max picked up Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson’s Sundance Grand Jury Prize U.S. Documentary winner “Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project” eight months after it debuted in Park City. Riyadh-registered Middle East and North Africa integrated media group Srmg has announced the launch of Asharq Documentary, an Arabic language, free-to-air factual channel available on a variety of platforms.
Asharq Documentary joins a growing bouquet of channels gathered under the Asharq News Network banner, which also include Asharq News, Asharq Business with Bloomberg, and the soon-to-launch Asharq Discovery.
Srmg said the creation of Asharq was in response to growing audience appetite for more long-form, high-quality documentaries in the Mena region.
The group said that according to an in-house study more than 80% of those surveyed in Mena wanted more and higher quality factual Arabic content.
It also noted that its Asharq News channel has already aired over 400 hours of quality documentaries with strong viewing figures and positive audience engagement.
“The Mena region currently lacks a comprehensive Arabic language documentary channel that delves into the topics shaping our world today,” said Srmg CEO Jomana R.

On the evening of Feb. 23, 2022, a small team of AP correspondents including Mstyslav Chernov headed to Mariupol. They pulled into the Ukrainian port city at 3:30 a.m. Russia invaded Mariupol one hour later.
As the only international reporters in the city, the Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and his team captured what later became defining images of the war: dying children, mass graves, and the bombing of a maternity hospital.
Chernov, Vasilisa Stepanenko and Evgeniy Maloletka initially went to Mariupol to capture what they thought would be news segments. But after escaping the city, Chernov knew that he needed to take the harrowing footage he and his team had captured and make a documentary. The result is “20 Days in Mariupol,” a 94-minute film that is both devastating and riveting. The Television Critics Association awards nominations went public Friday, and it was great news for some series and sad news for others.
The Last of Us, The Bear, and Succession are in a three-way tie with five nominations apiece.
All three shows were expected to get some awards love, so their performances here are not surprising.
The Bear has been a bonafide hit for FX and Hulu, but there were some more first-year shows in the mix, too.
Andor, Jury Duty, Shrinking, Interview With the Vampire, and Poker Face were all well-represented.
Somewhat surprising: Ted Lasso and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel were shut out.
The news comes after both series have been big hits on the awards front and could set a precedent for upcoming awards shows.
Awards will be handed out at an in-person ceremony on August 7, 2023.
Check out the complete list of nominations below.

The final seasons of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and (maybe-probably) Ted Lasso got the cold shoulder from the Television Critics Assoc., which honored the Emmy-winning pair with a total of zero TCA Award nominations.
By contrast, Succession‘s swan song scored a leading five nods, putting the Roy family in a three-way tie with fellow HBO drama The Last of Us and Hulu’s breakout hit The Bear.
