Originally, the gameplay included much more survival elements, requiring the player to look for food and water to stay alive. Furthermore, many objects could only be obtained by carefully locating and unearthing them; failure to do that could destroy them. When Sean Clark took over, he removed these elements because they would only frustrate the player. He also simplified the interface, moving away from the traditional 'verb interface' that LucasArts had used for years, where the player performs actions by combining verb commands with objects.
