Netflix added another title to its rapidly expanding Japan live-action originals slate Wednesday with the announcement of the romantic drama series Beyond Goodbye.
The series is an original story by prolific Japanese screenwriter Yoshikazu Okada (Bl Metamorphosis, The Last 10 Years). It co-stars Kasumi Arimura, known for the Japanese blockbuster We Made a Beautiful Bouquet and the Netflix feature Call Me Chihiro, and Kentaro Sakaguchi, a TV drama regular and recent star of the feature drama success The Last 10 Years (2022).
The film tells the story of Saeko (Arimura), who suddenly loses her fiance Yusuke in a tragic traffic accident. As she tries to overcome her grief, she meets Naruse (Sakaguchi), a man who strangely reminds her of Yusuke. Little does she know that Naruse had received Yusuke’s heart a few months prior to their encounter — a heart still in love and holding all the memories of Yusuke and Saeko’s relationship.

“Basically it’s a Greek tragedy,” explains “A Hidden Life” cinematographer Jörg Widmer about the tragic story of “A Hidden Life.” “Franz doesn’t have a choice: he either goes to war and dies … or he sticks to his beliefs and goes to be executed.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Widmer above.
Directed by Terrence Malick, the film tells the true story of Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian farmer who refused to fight for the Nazis and was ultimately executed for his disobedience. In 2007 he was declared a religious martyr and beatified by the Catholic Church. “[Malick] wanted to make a movie about some people who are heroes but never would be remembered as heroes in the big picture of history,” says Widmer.

Willem Dafoe refused to open up during an interview with IndieWire in May about his experience working on “Aquaman” (IndieWire’s Eric Kohn wrote that Dafoe’s eyes “curled into slits and darkened” when asked about the superhero film), but he got a bit more honest on the topic at a recent 92Y interview while promoting “The Lighthouse.” Dafoe became an especially recognizable face in Hollywood after starring as Green Goblin in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man,” but the actor says making that film was more similar to indies than what has become the norm of giant comic book productions.
“‘Spider-Man’ was great fun because Sam Raimi made that like it was a little independent film,” Dafoe said. “And also that was before a lot of the technology was in place, and comic book movies were fairly new, so it was exciting. There was nothing by the numbers, they didn’t roll in the experts.

Robert Eggers made a black & white movie — literally. Meaning, we’re not talking digital. He shot in 35Mm Double-x black and white, a negative that hasn’t changed since the 1950s for his two-hander New England ghost story starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe.
In the color era, no matter what the year, it’s always a financier’s worst nightmare to hear that a filmmaker wants to shoot in black and white. Even going back to Peter Bagdanovich’s 1973 feature Paper Moon, Paramount had agita over commercial concerns for that pic whether Eggers could bend and shoot in black and white. The answer was always “No” as he tells us in today’s Crew Call podcast. The filmmaker totally understood their ask, even the possibility of a color cut for foreign territories, however, art is art.
Recent black and white movies are typically shot in color, then converted to black in white. This is what Dp Robert Elswit did with George Clooney’s 2005 Edward R. Murrow vs. Joseph McCarthy movie Good Night, and Good Luck ($31.6M). That process gave the film a precise amount of detail and clarity. But Eggers wanted The Lighthouse to be messy where blacks drop, blue skies are white, bleak and austere and Dafoe and Pattinson’s rosy cheeks are darker. Eggers and Blaschke literally took their camera into the ocean to get in-your-face shots of the roaring waves. And as far as the sound goes, another character in the film a la Sergio Leone pic, Eggers says “we needed a larger soundscape as big as any Marvel movie” when it came to blaring lighthouse fog horn, ocean mist, piercing wind and seagull cries during their 38 day shoot.
While Eggers is in pre-production on the Viking revenge saga The Northman with Nicole Kidman, Alexander Skarsgård, The Witch’s Anya Taylor-Joy, Bill Skarsgård, and Dafoe in talks, the filmmaker says that “until I’m on set saying action, I don’t know what’s next for me” given his nonstop development of projects.
As far as third film in his New England horror saga, the Lee, New Hampshire native says, “Oh, yeah, there needs to be one more…one more New England horror adjacent folk story should be made.”
Robert Eggers, the director behind the critically acclaimed horror film, The Witch, has potentially assembled a starry cast for his latest project, The Northman, set up at New Regency. Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman, Alexander Skarsgård, The Witch’s Anya Taylor-Joy, Bill Skarsgård, and Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe are in talks to star this film, which is being produced by Lars Knudsen.
To date, The Lighthouse has won the Fipresci prize at the Cannes Film Festival, the Jury prize at Deauville, with Dafoe being nominated for Best Actor at the Gotham awards. The A24 release is on its way to $11M at the domestic box office, one of the fall’s bright spots on the specialty circuit.

There’s a light in the darkness. This is a literal and physical aspect found in the settings of both of Robert Eggers' features, The Witch (2015), and The Lighthouse (2019), but it’s also a thematic and tonal truth that makes the filmmaker’s horror films distinct within the genre.
The Lighthouse centers on two lighthouse keepers, Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe) and Ephraim Winslow (Robert Pattinson), whose isolation on an unnamed island off the coast of New England builds to a strange, humorous and rocky relationship, one beset by the tumultuous waves of folk ...

Morelia, Mexico – Mindful of how his words could “turn into click-bait,” Willem Dafoe, in Morelia to present his latest film “The Lighthouse,” declined to comment about the looming advent of more streaming giants in the market. “It’s a complex question; we’re still forming ideas on how people see films and how films are being made,” he said. However, he later observed: “I still like film a lot, not just for its quality but the intention is stronger; you can’t just shoot and shoot like you can on digital film, so it changes how you think, it weeds out the laziness in performances,” he mused.

Whenever each new iteration of the Dark Knight is cast, I’m sure the first thing on everyone’s mind is how their costume will look. After that’s been addressed, the next item for business is probably how the actor’s voice will sound while they’re suited up. Although I’m sure a percentage of you reading this are hoping Robert Pattinson will do a spot-on Kevin Conroy impression in The Batman, that likely won’t be the case.
Still, I highly doubt Pattinson will go the way of George Clooney by making no attempt whatsoever to distinguish Bruce Wayne from Batman, but he’ll indeed put his own stamp on the timeless icon. We probably won’t know what he sounds like until the first trailer drops, but at least we’re getting somewhat of an idea early on.

Zoe Kravitz is set to follow in the footsteps of Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry, and Anne Hathaway by starring as Catwoman in Warner Bros.’ upcoming superhero tentpole “The Batman.” Kravitz will star opposite Robert Pattinson, who is set to play Bruce Wayne/Batman, and Jonah Hill, who boarded the project last month in an unspecified villain role. Anyone who saw Robert Eggers’ prior outing The Witch knows that he’s a pretty weird dude. His film are odd, to say the least. Well, opening this week, his newest outing, The Lighthouse, manages to make The Witch appear mainstream by comparison. Ponder that for a moment. Though featuring a pair of bigger names in his cast this time, Eggers is doubling down on bizarre imagery and unusual filmmaking. A24 is going to have an interesting time convincing audiences to see this one. Luckily, one thing they have on their side is that, if you gird your loins and subject yourself to its weirdness, a certain type of cinematic nirvana takes over. It’s hard to explain, but while this isn’t a great work, it’s a good and, more importantly, an interesting one. Sometimes, that’s all that matters. The movie is described on IMDb as “The...

Based on an original idea by Hunter, Edie tells the story of an 83-year-old woman who, when faced with the prospect of life in an old folks home, sets off to rekindle her fond memories of childhood by heading to Scotland to climb a mountain. Filmed on location at Suilven Mountain in Sutherland, Scotland, the film is quite gorgeous to look at. Hunter is know for his flair for visuals and Edie looks like no exception. Edie stars Bafta nominated actress Sheila Hancock, Paul Brannigan and Kevin Guthrie. The film will premiere at...

First announced way back in 2008, Simon Hunter has been set to direct Last Blood, a live action adaptation of the Keenspot graphic novel that takes place after a zombie apocalypse, when vampires must battle to protect the last surviving humans to keep alive the necessary blood supply. Hunter helmed the terrible Mutant Chronicles, the actioner that stars Thomas Jane, John Malkovich, Ron Perlman and Devon Aoki, as well as the James Purefoy-starrer Lighthouse. The pic will be formally announced at Comic-Con this weekend. Last Blood will be produced by Ironclad exec producer Christian Arnold-Beutel as well as Red Giant Media's Aimee Schoof, Isen Robbins and Benny R. Powell, and Keenspot's Chris and Bobby Crosby. The Crosby siblings created the graphic novel with illustrator Owen Gieni, and Bobby Crosby wrote the script with Nick V. Sterling.

Halloween is always a good time to catch up on the horror flicks I've always meant to see but have slipped through the cracks over the years. This year is no exception and I've got a whole crap load of films I'll be checking out leading up to the premier of AMC's Walking Dead and then taking me well into the rest of the night.
Here's what I'm planning to spin this year:
- The Beyond (Lucio Fulci): I hear this is one of Fulci's best. Bat shit strange and full of his usual trashy gore.
- Dark Night of the Scarecrow (Frank De Felitta): This classic Mftv horror flick only recently became available on dvd through Vci. It's been called the first ever "scarecrow" horror pic, but whatever. It's supposed to have a real awesome old-time horror flick kind of feel.
- Devil's Backbone (Guillermo del Toro): Nope,...

Mutant Chronicles tries to be The Dirty Dozen meets Aliens but it’s really more like Pearl Harbor meets The Chronicles Of Riddick. In case you couldn’t guess, that’s Not a compliment. It’s out today from Magnolia (reviewed from the $26.98 single-disc DVD; also available as a $29.98 two-disc Collector’s Edition DVD; $34.98 Blu-ray).
Director Simon Hunter and screenwriter Philip Eisner haven’t been prolific in the last decade. Hunter hasn’t helmed a feature since 2000’s Lighthouse (a decent horror movie) and Eisner has only added Firestarter: Rekindled to his credits since penning Paul W.S. Anderson’s Event Horizon. Perhaps both have gotten a little rusty over the years, because Mutant Chronicles is a boring, flavorless, sermonic flick that dulls with its repetitive, exhausting “action” sequences and tiresome, pedagogical passages on the values of religious conviction and blind faith.

Produced in 2008 on what looks to be a rather sizeable budget (or at the very least, something out of the reach of your standard Sci Fi Channel Original Movie, which ironically is where the movie will probably end up after some extensive cuts), “Mutant Chronicles” by Simon Hunter (“Lighthouse”) spent most of its first year on the shelf as the studio tried to figure out what to do with it. The film was released in Europe and Video-on-Demand before finally making its Stateside theatrical bow last week, and is not expected to do very much at the box office. TV advertisement for the film is nil, and what’s more, Internet advertisement (usually the way to go with these types of genre movies) is nearly non-existent, especially for what is potentially such a geek-friendly movie. To be sure, the studio’s apprehension is understandable, as the film is not everyone’s cup of tea,...

Variety reports that Simon Hunter (pictured), whose futuristic action shocker Mutant Chronicles will be released by Magnolia Pictures this month, will direct the survival chiller Curve. He’ll also be rewriting the script, initially penned by Kimberly Johnson and previously revised by Zodiac’s James Vanderbilt.
The story concerns a young woman on a road trip through upstate New York who finds herself playing cat and mouse with a psychopath who at first seems like a good Samaritan. Originally, Ghost Rider’s Eva Mendes was set to star and Prom Night’s Neal H. Moritz was one of the producers, but they’re no longer attached. The Benderspink company will instead produce with financier Solipsist Films, and production is set to begin this fall. Hunter, who also helmed the superior psychochiller Dead Of Night (a.k.a. Lighthouse), talks about Chronicles in Fango #282, on sale now, and #283, on sale later this month.

After spending a good four years of his life on Chronicles , a tremendous visual challenge to execute, this British helmer is yearning to pick up a 16mm camera and tackle something with a small scale and a high impact, much like his 2000 debut Lighthouse .
