The forthcoming Michael Jackson biopic has been slammed by the maker of the documentary Leaving Neverland, with Dan Reed calling the movie’s script “a complete whitewash.”
Reed, whose 2019 film featured claims by Wade Robson and James Safechuck that Jackson had abused them as children, told The Times of London he had seen a draft script of the biopic, due for release next year. He said:
“It’s an out-and-out attempt to completely rewrite the allegations and dismiss them out of hand, and contains complete lies. You never even see him alone with any boys, when it is a matter of fact that he shared his bed with small children for many years.”
The biopic has drawn a pedigree team in director Antoine Fuqua, who made Training Day, and writer John Logan, Oscar-nominated for Gladiator, The Aviator and Hugo.
Oscar-nominated Colman Domingo is playing Jackson’s abusive father, Joe, while Miles Teller will play John Branca, Jackson’s manager.
The newspaper adds that music sales data suggests that Jackson’s appeal is growing again after his star waned prior to his death in 2009. It cites Sony’s confirmation last month that it will acquire half of Jackson’s catalog in a deal that valued his assets at $1.2 billion — the largest transaction for a single musician’s work. And Billboard reports that consumption of Jackson’s music worldwide grew last year by more than 38 per cent to 6.5 billion on-demand streams.
The musical Mj, telling the story of the star’s life and using his music, has also arrived in London, fresh from success on Broadway, with German and Australian tour dates also scheduled. The musical makes no mention of the abuse allegations that Jackson faced.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences doesn't always get it right. Actually, you can count on them to just about never get it right.
This is especially true of the lead acting categories, where voters often become prisoners of the moment and vote for the buzziest and/or showiest performance. This is how Al Pacino's chilling depiction of Michael Corleone's descent into pure, dead-eyed evil in "The Godfather Part II" gets passed over in favor of Art Carney's amiable portrayal of a lonely old man hitting the road with his pet cat in "Harry and Tonto." This results in overdue Oscars, which frequently create new injustices — like Denzel Washington's bravura turn as Malcolm X losing to Al Pacino's ceaseless hoo-hahing in "Scent of a Woman," which led to Washington getting his Best Actor trophy for his (admittedly entertaining) grandstanding work in "Training Day" (which cost...

Hollywood has seen many stars come and go over the years, but very few have truly left a mark. Here are nine actors with the most nominations, whose incredible body of work forced the Academy to acknowledge their effort.

The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Actor are Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”), Colman Domingo (“Rustin”), Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”), Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”), and Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”). Murphy (16/5) is favored to win by our odds, followed in order by Giamatti (18/5), Cooper (9/2), Wright (9/2), and Domingo (9/2).
Whereas last year’s lead male lineup was the first in almost nine decades to consist entirely of Oscars newcomers, this one includes three rookies and two general veterans. Standing alone in having already competed for this specific award is Cooper, who was previously recognized for “Silver Linings Playbook” (2013), “American Sniper” (2015), and “A Star Is Born” (2019). Since he personally helmed both “A Star Is Born” and “Maestro,” he is now the fourth person to direct himself to multiple acting nominations, following Laurence Olivier, Warren Beatty, and Clint Eastwood.

This Classic 1990s Movie Should Have Earned Denzel Washington His Second Oscar (Before Training Day)
Denzel Washington's Oscar win for Training Day should have been his third, with Malcolm X showcasing his strongest work. Washington's portrayal of Malcolm X was flawless, but controversy surrounding the figure likely deterred the Academy from awarding him. Training Day earned Washington his second Oscar, but his transformative performance in Malcolm X deserved recognition.
Denzel Washington is a two-time Academy Award-winning actor, but an Oscar snub of one of his films from the 1990s would have made him a two-time Oscar winner much earlier. Actor Terry Crews is best known for the portrayal of Terry Jeffords in the sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine. While the sitcom made Crews a household name, the actor initially struggled to carve a name for himself in Hollywood, having made his film debut in 2000. One of Crews’ earliest roles was in Denzel Washington’s 2001 crime thriller film Training Day.

We have more intriguing casting news for one of the most highly anticipated series of 2024.
From the moment NBC began developing Suits: LA, fans of the original series have been clamoring for updates about the spinoff.
And some of the information about the cast has received a very mixed response.
But we think this latest report won't be as controversial as some of the news that preceded it.
According to a new report from Variety, Lex Scott Davis is the latest addition to the cast.
Though perhaps not a household name, Davis has an extensive and impressive resume, highlighted by her work in The First Purge, her performance as Toni Braxton in the biopic Unbreak My Heart and her roles on the TV series Training Day and The L Word: Generation Q.
Davis has been cast as Erica Rollins, whom producers describe as “a savvy and strong-willed rising star.

Lex Scott Davis is joining the cast!
The 33-year-old Training Day actress is set to star in a lead role on the Suits LA spinoff pilot at NBC, Variety reported.
Lex joins previously announced cast members Stephen Amell and Josh McDermitt in the pilot.
The official description of the pilot states: “Ted Black (Amell), a former federal prosecutor from New York, has reinvented himself representing the most powerful clients in Los Angeles. His firm is at a crisis point, and in order to survive he must embrace a role he held in contempt his entire career. Ted is surrounded by a stellar group of characters who test their loyalties to both Ted and each other while they can’t help but mix their personal and professional lives. All of this is going on while events from years ago slowly unravel that led Ted to leave behind everything and everyone he loved.

Terry Crews Reveals He Was Paid “Nothing” For ‘Training Day’ But “Heart Is Always Full of Gratitude”
Terry Crews is careful not to correlate his personal gratitude with financial compensation. The actor and TV host revealed this week he didn’t receive payment for his role in Training Day but emphasized that the lack of a check has never affected his love for a project.
“I have never ever, ever looked at whatever money I got as a horror story,” Crews said during an appearance on Club Shay Shay. “You can’t nod yes and mean no.”
Crews went on to say he was only paid $4,000 for his role in 2002’s Friday After Next and that he received “nothing” for 2001’s Training Day. The two films eventually put Crews on the path to becoming the movie star he is today.
“I didn’t get zero [for Training Day], but it changed my life forever,” Crews said. “You wouldn’t know who I was if it weren’t for a no-paying job.

For the past six years in a row, the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor has gone to men with more than 35 minutes of screen time in their respective films. Although four of last year’s nominees could have bucked that trend, the academy chose to keep things consistent by honoring Ke Huy Quan’s especially lengthy performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” By appearing in a whopping 58 minutes and 33 seconds (or 42.03%) of the Best Picture winner, he more than comfortably surpassed his category’s screen time average and came within nine minutes of outpacing every previous supporting male victor.
Quan’s performance is the second longest in his film, as he and his Best Actress-winning on-screen wife, Michelle Yeoh, are separated by 36 minutes and 43 seconds (or 26.35%). Directly below him is Stephanie Hsu – who earned a supporting bid as his character’s daughter – at 42:18 (30.36%). Considering all 87 featured male turns that have merited Academy Awards,...

In the 95 years that they’ve been handing out Academy Awards, just 10 African-American actresses have won dating back to Hattie McDaniel’s famed supporting actress triumph for “Gone with the Wind” in 1940. Nine of those wins have come in Best Supporting Actress, with Halle Berry being the lone victor in Best Lead Actress for “Monster’s Ball” in 2002. Berry has expressed disappointment that no other Black winner has followed in her footsteps over the past two decades. But the truth is that while it was 51 years between McDaniel’s win and the second for Whoopi Goldberg in “Ghost” in 1991, things have improved significantly over the past few decades for African American actresses and actors in terms of winning at the Oscars in the supporting categories in particular.
This year, there are five opportunities for Black performers to take home an acting trophy spread across three categories: Colman Domingo (“Rustin”) and Jeffrey Wright...

Just 30 minutes after final voting for the Screen Actors Guild Awards wrapped up, I made a last-minute switch in my best actress prediction — from Lily Gladstone in “Killers of the Flower Moon” to Emma Stone in “Poor Things.” Let this be a lesson: Second-guessing yourself is seldom a good idea.
Lily Gladstone made history as the first Native American and Indigenous person to clinch an individual SAG Award for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman, in Martin Scorsese’s gripping crime saga. With a lead actress (drama) Golden Globe and a SAG Award now under her belt, Gladstone’s award-season momentum continues to be formidable. Historically, only seven performers have failed to win the Oscar after winning the unique combination of Globe and SAG:
1995: Lauren Bacall (“The Mirror Has Two Faces”) lost to Juliette Binoche 2001: Russell Crowe (“A Beautiful Mind”) lost to Denzel Washington (“Training Day...

A jam-packed weekend of last-gasp Oscar campaigning — the film Academy’s final round of voting opened on Feb. 22 and will close on Feb. 27 — kicked off on Saturday night with the 30th SAG Awards, the first major awards show ever to be streamed on Netflix. But do Saturday night’s results actually provide reliable clues about what will happen two weeks from Sunday night at the 96th Oscars?
I would argue that they probably do.
SAG Award winners are determined by the roughly 160,000 members of SAG-AFTRA, the world’s largest union of actors, whereas Oscar winners are determined by the roughly 9,500 voting members of the film Academy, 86 percent of whom are not actors, which would suggest that any overlap is purely coincidental.
But it is quite a statement that SAG-AFTRA members voted best actor in a film — which has long looked to be neck-and-neck between Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer over Paul Giamatti...

Denzel Washington and Spike Lee are reuniting to adapt a Japanese thriller, marking their fifth collaboration. "High and Low" will be based on Akira Kurosawa's work. Set to debut in theaters before streaming, the new film must capture the complex themes of the original.
Denzel Washington, Spike Lee, and Alan Fox are teaming up to remake Akira Kurosawa's High and Low, giving Washington a new opportunity to adapt a film by the legendary director. Washington's first endeavor to adapt a Kurosawa film came in the form of 2016's The Magnificent Seven, a remake of the 1960 classic western starring Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen, which is itself a remake of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai.
High and Low is also a remake, insofar as being a loose adaptation of the 1959 novel King's Ransom by Ed McBain. The Washington-Lee version will be their first team-up since 2006's Inside Man. Washington and Lee's previous...

Jaafar Jackson as Michael Jackson in Michael. Photo Credit: Kevin Mazur
Worldwide audiences received their first look today at Jaafar Jackson in performance as Michael Jackson, bringing to life the “Man in the Mirror” from the legendary 1992-1993 Dangerous Tour.
The iconic photo, captured by renowned photographer Kevin Mazur, was released by Lionsgate and Universal Pictures International, the studios behind the much-anticipated April 18, 2025 film “Michael.”
The choice to have Mazur capture the first-look photograph of Jaafar Jackson is as intentional as so many of the artistic choices the producers have made. As one of the photographers who documented Michael over many years, Mazur captured rehearsals as he prepared to entertain the world with his “This Is It” concerts. He is now also the first to photograph Jaafar Jackson in character as Michael.

The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson, is easily one of the most impactful and important cinematic events of the 21st century. The classic fantasy novels written by J.R.R. Tolkien were often considered to be unfilmable, making the idea of successfully translating them to the big screen almost laughable at the time. Somehow, Jackson, New Line Cinema and the rest of the extensive team on the films were able to do the impossible.
The result was a series of films that was able to capture the world’s attention in an incredible fashion. Each film was a smash hit at the box office, with The Return of the King becoming just the second film in history to gross more than $1 billion worldwide.
This success was also seen at the Academy Awards, as all three films were strong contenders in their three consecutive years in a row.

Actor Denzel Washington and director Spike Lee announced they are joining forces once more, the first time in 18 years, for a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller “High and Low.” The duo have collaborated four times previously, on “Mo’ Better Blues,” “Malcolm X,” “He Got Game,” and, most recently, “Inside Man.”
“High and Low” was originally based on the novel “King’s Ransom” by the prolific American author Ed McBain. McBain was a nom de plume for Evan Hunter, who also wrote “The Blackboard Jungle” (adapted to a popular film with a significant early turn by Sidney Poitier) and was a co-screenwriter of Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds.”

While innovations in technology have made it easier than ever to make a movie, it has become harder than ever to receive significant financial backing. Doubly hard when one is a director of an underrepresented background.
Black Americans have been a part of the film industry since the beginning, over a century ago, but one could argue that there were not any Black film directors given enough of a platform to become a household name until the 1990s. Though a diverse set of directors were able to breakthrough from that time through the aughts, the shift in focus toward solely blockbuster filmmaking has left many Black filmmakers out to dry.
In recent years, quite a few Black directors have seen a greater level of support and reverence, from “Get Out” director Jordan Peele to “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler, “Moonlight” director Barry Jenkins to “Selma” director Ava DuVernay. And every...
