It’s often said that the best things in life are free, but James Gandolfini proved that sometimes, the best things come with a hefty price tag—and that price was part of his paycheck. The beloved star of The Sopranos, who embodied the iconic Tony Soprano, had a knack for playing the tough guy, but in real life, he was anything but.
When production of The Sopranos was on the brink of collapse due to a contract dispute, Gandolfini pulled a move so generous that it practically made the mob boss’ code of loyalty look small time.

In a past interview, David Chase, the creator of The Sopranos, shared his thoughts on the widely discussed finale of the series. The ending, which left Tony Soprano’s fate up in the air, created a storm of debate among fans. People were split, with some believing that Tony survived, while others felt that his death was the inevitable conclusion.

The late James Gandolfini is often looked as the single biggest reason why The Sopranos is considered one of the most iconic shows of all time. As the mob boss Tony Soprano, Gandolfini brought to life one of the most favored anti-heroes of all time, on the HBO series.

And while he pulled off a range of difficult-to-watch actions during his time on the show, it seems as if Gandolfini was firmly a hero, off-screen. A new HBO documentary, Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos, revealed that the actor went ahead and paid more than $30k each to each of his castmates on the show.

They say that luck is where preparation meets opportunity, but sometimes, even the most prepared can find themselves standing at a crossroads, ready to walk away from something that could change their lives forever. Michael Imperioli, the actor who played the unpredictable and ambitious Christopher Moltisanti in The Sopranos, knows this better than anyone.
It’s hard to believe that the show, which is often dubbed the greatest TV series of all time, almost lost one of its key players before it even started. But Imperioli was never one to blindly chase fame; he wanted something more.

What would have happened if he had chosen a different path? If, instead of embracing the role of a hot-headed, aspiring scriptwriter, Imperioli had walked away from the role that defined him? Well, the world of The Sopranos was not about to let him go that easily.

The Sopranos is easily one of the best television shows of all time with actor James Gandolfini’s performance as Tony Soprano receiving universal acclaim. In the series, Gandolfini played the role of a mob boss seeking therapy while trying to manage his violent professional life. However, Gandolfini never attended therapy in real life.

Throughout his Hollywood run, James Gandolfini preferred to stay out of the spotlight and wanted his acting roles to do the talk. It turns out Game of Thrones fans should’ve seen the Season 8 disaster coming from miles away, because one of the showrunners basically foreshadowed it years ago. David Benioff once shared his very strong (and kinda controversial) take on The Sopranos ending, admitting he’d gotten into plenty of arguments about it.

The Sopranos may be one of the greatest television shows of all time but David Chase never had plans to make six seasons of a network TV show. The show, starring James Gandolfini, was initially planned as a movie. It was supposed to be a mob comedy centered around a mob boss and his problematic mother, much similar to Tony and Livia Soprano.

However, Chase was told that a mob comedy wasn’t exactly the crowd-puller in the theaters. But he was then approached for creating a TV series based on Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, which became a classic hit as a movie. Chase wasn’t ready to rehash the story for television, but he had another storyline in his mind.

As "Yellowstone" approached its conclusion, yeehaws turned into hoo-hahs when Kevin Costner made a heated exit from the series prior to its final batch of episodes. Costner's departure, the result of behind-the-scenes issues, ultimately led to his character John Dutton being killed off in "Yellowstone" Season 5 Part 2. Regardless of how things wrapped up though, there's no doubt that Costner, as the leader of the Yellowstone ranch, provided exactly what was required — something that the show's creator, Taylor Sheridan, envisioned from the start.
In s 2018 interview with Collider, Sheridan said that casting Costner was a dream come true, describing it as collaboration he had long hoped for. "I'd been a fan of Kevin's work my whole life," Sheridan confessed. "Just the chance to sit down with someone you've admired was a great honor. I was really eager to find something to do with him, and I had the idea for this show.

If you know famed comic Rodney Dangerfield, then you know his punchline, “I get no respect!” But whether he was performing at a nightclub or chatting with Johnny Carson on the couch of The Tonight Show, some of Dangerfield’s most fertile comedic ground was joking about his wife. Their terrible sex life, her being a lousy cook, how much she loathed him — all were fair game.
Arguably, it was his wife Joan Dangerfield, who “got no respect” in his stand-up sets. Thankfully, she enjoyed her late-husband’s “my wife” jokes as much as anyone else. And so, just in time for Valentine’s Day, we asked Joan to share some of her favorite Rodney Dangerfield “my wife” jokes — and to let us in on which had the most truth to them.

Pork rolls. Bruce Springsteen. 24-hour diners. Boardwalks. These are just a few of the quintessential New Jersey icons you'll find in most films about the state. New Jersey has one of the most unique and diverse landscapes, boasting pastoral farmlands, tightly-packed cities, refineries stretching to the sky, and sandy beaches next to amusement parks.
Yet, despite this eclectic mix, many stories about New Jersey focus on escape, wanting to get the hell out of the state to chase something bigger and better. This feeling is exacerbated by being right next to New York City. It can be frustrating to have the skyline of that thrilling concrete jungle just outside your doorstep, yet still feel far enough away to be unattainable.
The notion that New Jerseyans are always on the outside looking in, just a step away from success, is a common theme. Many films about New Jersey have working-class characters who dream of rising above.

Jennifer Esposito’s Fresh Kills does not unfold in the bluster and bravado one might expect from a mafia narrative. Instead, it invites us to peer into the quiet, suffocating corners of a world where family ties, rather than the criminal enterprise itself, become the true source of anguish.
Set against the grim backdrop of Staten Island—a place as decayed and overcast as the lives it holds—the film traces the lives of two sisters, Connie and Rose, caught within the gravitational pull of their father’s shady empire. What seems like a film about mobsters quickly reveals itself to be something far darker: a meditation on the corrosion of the soul when familial loyalty trumps moral reckoning.

Now that Yellowstone season 5 has concluded, fans are anxiously awaiting what's next from the Taylor Sheridan universe. Thankfully, there's a new season of 1923 coming to Paramount+ in February 2025, but there are also a number of Sheridan-produced series coming down the pipeline, including the highly anticipated new season of the Jeremy Renner crime drama Mayor Kingstown.
Back in December 2024, Paramount+ announced that Mayor of Kingstown was renewed for season 4 with Renner returning to reprise his role as Mike McLusky. Since the renewal, the streamer hasn't revealed too many details about the forthcoming season, like a filming timeline or a release timeframe, but we're learning more information about the new cast members joining Renner.
Mayor of Kingstown season 4 had added a handful of high-profile series regulars and recurring star, and one of the new additions just might be the show's biggest gets yet. Deadline reported that Edie Falco, the Emmy Award-winning...

Did you know that there's a movie out there starring Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis, Amy Poehler, the late Edward Hermann, "The Office's" Jenna Fischer, Peter Bogdanovich, and even Melissa Rauch from "The Big Bang Theory?" What if I told you the movie is written and directed by Matthew Weiner, a veteran of "The Sopranos" who went on to create "Mad Men?" Are you wondering why you haven't seen it before?! It's probably because that movie, 2014's "Are You Here," was a huge flop — but I'll get back to that in just a moment. First, what is "Are You Here" — which is currently proving pretty popular on Amazon Prime Video — about?
When we first meet Wilson's local weatherman Steve Dallas, he's a womanizer who barely does his job — often outsourcing the actual weather predictions to his assistant Delia Shepherd (Lauren Lapkus) before taking credit for them on air — and blows his money on expensive dates,...

David Cronenberg has said that his new film The Shrouds – which has been making the festival rounds lately (you can read what JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray thought of it Here) – was originally intended to be a Netflix TV series, but the streamer dropped it after paying him to write the pilot episode. So a feature film it is, and Sideshow and Janus Films have acquired all U.S. distribution rights to the film, with their plan being to give it a theatrical release sometime in the spring of 2025. We don’t know a specific release date for this one yet, but a new teaser trailer has arrived online and you can check it out in the embed above. We saw the previous teaser trailer eight months ago.
Pyramide Distribution will be giving the film a theatrical release in France on April 30th.

With just over one month to go before the premiere of Daredevil: Born Again, new promotional shots and a look at the fresh logo have arrived, all of which is completely in line with the dark edge that the show has been teasing.
Hitting the web ahead of the March 4th debut, the promo art for Daredevil: Born Again is noted for deep reds, grays and blacks, immediately pointing towards a tone that the character and property haven’t yet reached. We also get a look at some chief baddies, including Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) and a more subtle nod to Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter (Wilson Bethel), as Daredevil is seen in front of New York City which looks to be targeted within a bullseye…We also get a look at the new logo, an update of the famous “double D”, all of which you can see courtesy of...

Long before the Roys of New York or the Sopranos of New Jersey, one family dominated television: the Ewings of "Dallas." The genre-shaking soap opera aired for 14 seasons from 1978 to 1991, chronicling the dramatic, twist-filled epic saga of the Ewing Oil dynasty.
On a picturesque ranch in Dallas, Texas, the family used their money, connections, and cunning to bat away threats from outside and within. Whatever threats that rival oilman, spurned lovers, or wannabe politicians think they can pose, "Dallas" always reminds us that there's nothing stronger -- or more dangerous -- than family.
Over 30 years have passed since the final episode of the original series, and there's been well over 10 years of silence from this world following a brief revival on TNT. As such, many are curious about what happened to the cast of "Dallas," so we tracked down as much information about its massive ensemble cast as we could.

Taylor Sheridan has really managed to endear himself to Hollywood, thanks to how his shows have managed to catch the attention of an audience that Hollywood considered completely lost. However, there is a large section of this fandom that is dealing with some dissonance when it comes to the show.

Given all the hype around Yellowstone, there was a section of the fandom that expected the show to follow in the footsteps of prestige TV classics like The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, and Ozark. However, what the fans ended up getting was a soap opera which is nowhere near as complex or deep as fans expected it to be.

Roseanne Barr, the comedian and actress who was removed from her self-titled ABC sitcom in 2018, is planning a return to television. Now 72, she has teamed up with longtime collaborator Allan Stephan, a producer from Roseanne, to develop a new comedy series.
Details About The Upcoming Show
In an interview with Variety, Barr described the upcoming show as a blend of The Roseanne Show and The Sopranos.
The series will span four to six episodes and follow an Alabama farmer who takes on the mission of “saving the United States from drug gangs and China” while cultivating and selling substances like cannabis and psychedelic mushrooms.
“It’s silly and out there,” Barr shared. “[It will contain] very offensive ideas and a lot of swearing.” She added that the series is partially inspired by her life in Hawaii, where she lives on a farm with her daughter, son-in-law, and six grandchildren. “They have goats running through their house and stuff,...

The Sopranos followed the story of mob boss Tony Soprano, played by the brilliant James Gandolfini. The series revolved around Tony trying to find a balance between his mob family and his real family. As a result, Gandolfini’s performance began integral to the series and it might surprise some fans that he was nearly replaced by another actor who was later cast in a different role.

Back in 2018, Roseanne Barr was fired from the reboot of her namesake sitcom. Since then, the actress has been planning her comeback. In a recent conversation, Barr gave a few hints on what the show will be like. She also teased her backup plan if the series doesn’t sell in Hollywood.
The Comeback Was Described As A Cross Between ‘The Roseanne Show & The Sopranos’
Getting her start as a standup comedian, Barr’s breakout was her own namesake sitcom, Roseanne. At the time, the series was considered subversive for its realistic portrayal of a working-class family.
In 2017, ABC announced a revival of the series including most of the original cast. Notably, the sequel series retconned the earlier series’ original ending, which infamously killed off John Goodman’s character Dan.
Roseanne Barr – YouTube
However, the revival ended up cancelled in 2018 after Barr released controversial tweets about government official Valerie Jarrett.

The streaming wars remain a struggle in juggling quantity and quality. However, there's one service that's struck a finely tuned balance, since one can say the best TV shows on Max can also be considered among the greatest TV series of all time, according to IMDb. Now, if only someone could convince Max's parent company to stop removing original series and movies for tax break purposes, that would be terrific. Don't let Zaslavamania run wild, brother!

Lorraine Bracco played the role of the defensive but empathetic Dr. Jennifer Melfi in The Sopranos. Tasked with giving therapy to a mafia boss, Dr. Melfi has to maintain her composure and not judge the moral ethics of her client’s line of work while also helping him. Her on-screen co-star James Gandolfini played the boss Tony Soprano.
Bracco’s performance in The Sopranos was highly appreciated at the time. She received Primetime Emmy nominations four times, with thrice for Outstanding Lead Actress. One of the things about Sally Albright that drives Harry Burns crazy in the 1989 movie “When Harry Met Sally” is her picky food sensibilities. It takes her an hour and a half to make a sandwich, he tells her. In the sequel, she only has 30 seconds.

Every A-lister in Hollywood is loaded, but to state the obvious, it is not like TV stars aren’t, especially in this era of prestige streaming. If you’ve got the star power and the right role, you’re looking at million-dollar paychecks. So, naturally, to rank them in order of their salaries becomes a laborious affair. Does one take into account the total money made throughout the course of the show? Per episode, perhaps?
A tall order of names, meanwhile, emerges if one were to rank them using the per-episode metric. James Gandolfini in The Sopranos, Kaley Cuoco, Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons in The Big Bang Theory, Nicole Kidman in Big Little Lies, and Jennifer Aniston in Friends all clocked in a million dollars for their respective roles.

Imagine a world where The Sopranos wasn’t the same. Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas almost stole away one of the show’s greatest casting choices after James Gandolfini. Yes, things could’ve gone very differently, and not in a good way.

While Goodfellas is iconic in its own right, the thought of this actor missing from The Sopranos is like pasta without the sauce — unfathomable. Luckily, fate (and some solid decision-making) stepped in to keep this legendary role right where it belonged.

Band of Brothers has always remained on the peripheries of great television – critically revered but never quite as celebrated as other HBO projects like Game of Thrones or The Sopranos. However, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks’s sensational work isn’t just another war story filled with gritty realism and unfiltered horrors of war.

Roseanne Barr was fired by Disney (which owns ABC) in 2018 after she posted a racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett, a former advisor to President Obama. In the tweet, Barr compared Jarrett to an ape, which sparked widespread backlash.
The controversy quickly led to a public outcry, and ABC canceled her hit sitcom ‘Roseanne’ just hours later. Barr apologized for the tweet, but the damage had been done, and the network decided to sever ties with her.
The firing was a significant moment, as ‘Roseanne’ had been one of ABC’s highest-rated shows at the time, and the decision to cancel it was both a financial and cultural statement from the network. After the cancellation, ABC launched a spinoff show called ‘The Conners,’ which continued without Barr’s character.

The new series, which will star Barr and be four to six episodes in line with the U.K. comedy format, is “a cross between ‘The Roseanne Show’ and ‘The Sopranos,’” she says, and centers on a small-town farmer in Alabama who is “saving the United States from drug gangs and China.” The protagonist dabbles in growing and selling drugs like cannabis and magic mushrooms.
“It’s silly and out there,” she says. “[It will contain] very offensive ideas and a lot of swearing. I live with my daughter and her husband and their six children on a farm.

In March, Disney will debut Daredevil: Born Again, a continuation of the Daredevil series that ran for three seasons on Netflix, to much acclaim. All of the cast members from the original show are coming back, including Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock and Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, but there will be changes. There will be fewer episodes per season, for instance: nine vs 13. And showrunner Dario Scardapane told SFX Magazine that the tone would shift.
"There is more fun in the moments with these characters and a lot less navel-gazing than before," Scardapane said. "The earlier show, at its best, was fantastic. At its worst, it was two characters in a room talking about what a hero is. I felt that had been done. I'm not taking swipes. I just didn't want to hear characters grousing about their lot in life. I wanted to see them doing things.”

Daredevil: Born Again wasn't always going to be so closely linked to Netflix's Daredevil. However, as part of the show's creative overhaul, Marvel Studios realised that it was something fans wanted and proceeded to bring back several familiar actors and characters.
We don't expect the revival to be too beholden to what's come before and, in an interview with SFX, showrunner Dario Scardapane admitted there will be some very specific alterations.

Netflix canceled ‘Daredevil’ despite the success of its third season because the streaming giant decided to end its partnership with Marvel. This was part of a larger shift, as Disney (Marvel’s parent company) was preparing to launch its own streaming service, Disney+, and wanted control of its Marvel content.
Though ‘Daredevil’ was the most popular Marvel/Netflix show, the decision seemed to be part of Netflix’s move to phase out Marvel projects entirely, including ‘Luke Cage,’ ‘Iron Fist,’ and eventually ‘Jessica Jones’ and ‘The Punisher.’
Daredevil got a second chance with the revival ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ and after the creative reboot that the show underwent, its tone is more similar to the original show than ever.
Still, the ‘Born Again’ showrunner Dario Scardapane revealed that not all was good when it comes to the original show, and despite trying to follow it faithfully some changes had to be...

David Chase is the mind behind The Sopranos, the critically acclaimed HBO series that frequently ranks among the greatest television shows of all time. Chase created the series and served as a showrunner for all six seasons, which ended up setting the stage for modern prestige television dramas through the morally complex story about a mob boss.

During an interview, Chase talked about how his original concept for the series evolved during development. At the same time, his vision for the series became nearly impossible to pull off on a major network. Instead, Chase credited HBO with understanding his vision and the show couldn’t have materialized without the channel’s involvement.

The Peabody Awards are heading back to Los Angeles, following last year’s long-awaited move to the City of Angels. After several attempts — delayed by the Covid pandemic, and then by the Hollywood strikes — the Peabodys finally made their move to the west coast in 2024, and this year the event will celebrate its 85th anniversary at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on June 1.
“Our 2024 debut in L.A. was a major success, and we look forward to continuing to introduce the wider Hollywood creative community to what makes Peabody the premier award for media that matters,” said Jeffrey Jones, executive director of Peabody. “In such polarized times, the stories that Peabody honors are unifying in their clear call to address injustices and see humanity in all its beauty and messiness. Honoring such programs remains our goal.”
