PG-13 | | Action, War
A German submarine is boarded by disguised American submariners trying to capture their Enigma cipher machine.
In the original script, when Tank (Dave Power) is discussing the U-571's condition, he reports that the submarine has only six tons of fuel, which is insufficient to return them to the United States. That is why Lieutenant Tyler (Matthew McConaughey) sets a course for Greenland.
You're the skipper now. And the skipper always knows what to do whether he does or not.
Several scenes show depth charges dropping and exploding within a few feet of the submerged U-571. Detonations anywhere near this close would cause catastrophic hull damage and the boat would be sunk.
At least one version of the theatrical release contained no subtitles for the opening scene aboard the German submarine. This was possibly to increase dramatic effect, placing emphasis on the acting and visuals rather than the dialogue.
