  • Takes place after Goku and Krillin finished their year training with Master Roshi. As they head for the World Martial Arts Tour. They'll soon learn there's trouble upon the royal palace, where Master Crane & Mercenary Tao are both plotting something that involves harming Prince Chaozu who is also searching for something he lost.

Out of all 4 movies this one is the most alternate reality of the Original DragonBall. The roles of Chaozu, Tien, Mercenary Tao, Upa, Bora, & Master Crane are entirely different in this movie. Even General Blue & Sergent Metalic are completely different people.

Not only are the characters taking part of unique role plays. The feature shows an alternate meeting of Upa & Bora as well as a different visit to Penguin Village. It's the same flow as the other 2 movies. Only the word "Alternate" would best describe the story to it. Because everything about it is alternate from head to toe.

If you liked the first 2 which had different flows too. Then you'll mostly likely like this one too. Only down side is it's the same length as the first two. Making you wish that there was a Director's Cut of this movie.

Dragon Ball: Mystical Adventure is by far the best out of any Dragon Ball movie released during the series' original run. The fast-paced action fits well with the story, however some improvements can be made.

STORY: The story follows a strange mashup of events occurring in the Tournament, Red Ribbon Army, General Blue, Commander Red and Tien Shinhan Sagas of Dragon Ball. It revolves around Goku and Krillin, who have now completed their training under Master Roshi, attending the Martial Arts Championship in the kingdom of Mifan, ruled by Emperor Chiaotzu, so they can speak to Chiaotzu about the killing that his men are doing. In this time Chiaotzu has lost his "wife" (who turns out to be a doll) name Ran Ran, causing his men to go out and find her. Master Shen suggests that Chiaotzu send Mercenary Tao (renamed General Tao) to find the Dragon Balls so a wish can be made to The Eternal Dragon to bring Ran Ran back to Chiaotzu. General Blue (renamed Lieutenant Blue) suggests to Chiaotzu that Shen is evil and wants to use the Dragon Balls for himself only to be killed by Tao. Shen gathers all of the Dragon Balls besides one, which is held by Upa and his father Bora. They flee their land to Mifan where they are attacked by Major Metallitron while searching for the Dragon Balls. Goku, Krillin and Master Roshi help out and tell Tao that Bora is a guest of Mifan and that he shouldn't be killed as a result. During the tournament Goku meets back up with Bulma, Oolong, Yamcha, Puar and Launch who are looking to steal the Dragon Balls from Shen, which they eventually do, only for Master Shen to attack them, causing them to drop the Dragon Balls into a chasm. As the tournament progresses Tao enters in a match against Bora, which eventually results in Bora being impaled and killed on a statue. Seeking revenge for the death of his friend Goku tries to fight Bora, only to be hit by a Dodon Ray and only surviving due to the Dragon Ball hidden in his gi. He then meets Korin who gives him advice which allows him to confront Tao where their fight takes them to Penguin Village where they meet Arale Norimaki (from Dr. Slump). Eventually, Tao is killed by his missiles being redirected at him by Goku and Arale, allowing Goku to return to Mifan. Shen orders Tien to kill Emperor Chiaotzu, even though the two had a deep bond. Tien refuses and instead kills Shen with a Tri-Beam, as Goku arrives and kills Major Metallitron with a flying headbutt. Goku throws his Dragon Ball down the chasm to summon the Eternal Dragon, where he uses his wish to resurrect Bora, reuniting him with Upa, saving the day.

PROS: This movie's voice acting is a MAJOR step-up from that of the previous movie, Dragon Ball: Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle. All of the returning characters like Bulma, Yamcha, Krillin, Master Roshi and more all sound identical to their anime counterparts, albeit with the exception of Goku. This isn't a problem, however, as Goku has a surprisingly low number of lines despite being the main character. The animation was also top notch, with action scenes having a real sense of impact and weight which really makes every hit feel like it counts, something which was sorely missing from the previous entry. This movie also tries to go for more emotional scenes which is rare for Dragon Ball and pulls them off spectacularly, such as the bonding between Emperor Chiaotzu and Tien when Chiaotzu had a bad dream. The interaction feels so real and you really get a feel for the deep bond these two characters share.

CONS: However, like any movie, this one has it's fair share of problems. One of the main ones is the story. As you can tell from the lengthy paragraph I wrote on it, the story can be rather confusing at times as you can tell that they are trying to fit 5 seasons' worth of story and characters into one 50 minute movie. Another one is the vast differences in the story and roles of characters, with Chiaotzu serving the role of Commander Red, Master Shen serving the role of Staff Officer Black and Tao being an odd amalgamation of his anime counterpart and General Blue. Overall the movie attempted to be both a retelling of the Dragon Ball story, and it's own unique thing, and I feel it would've been better off choosing one or the other. The movie would definitely have benefited with a longer runtime so that scenes don't have to feel as rushed as it tries to contain it's rather ambitious story into a 50 minutes runtime to match with the movies that came before. Hell, half the final scenes of the movie are taken up by the credits which were hastily placed over half the screen during the ending sequence, obscuring the audience's vision during the summoning of the Eternal Dragon and the resurrection of Bora, just to keep the runtime down!

VERDICT: Despite the lengthy paragraph I wrote for the movie's cons, this is a very good movie. It serves as a fantastic introduction to the Dragon Ball franchise, and has a good share of funny moments and what few action sequences are there are very impressively animated. The emotional moments between Emperor Chiaotzu and Tien also are very well written, backed up by incredible voice acting for almost all characters (once again with the exception of Goku). This movie is a must watch for anyone interesting in, or currently loving the Dragon Ball series and easily the best out of the original Dragon Ball movie trilogy.
  • This is the third and final Dragon Ball movie released during the series' run on Japanese TV. Like the first two Dragon Ball movies, this movie re-tells pivotal moments that took place during the TV series. This movie re-tells Goku and Krillin's first trip to the World Martial Arts Tournament. In the movie, however, Goku, Krillin, Master Roshi, Turtle, and Launch are off to a small country known as Mifan, where the tournament is held and the winner recieves not only prize money, but is granted an audience with Mifan's emperor, whom is Chiaotzu. However, the heroes discover that the Chiaotzu's right-hand men, Master Shen, General Tao, and Tien, are conspiring to get the Dragon Balls to abdicate Chiaotzu from the throne and rule the kingdom themselves. In this DB movie, the villains and much of the supporting characters are characters from the TV series rather than original one-shots. This DB movie is by far the most martial-arts oriented as the series was beginning to lean towards that more over adventure and comedy. But this DB movie has the best combination of martial arts and comedy and is always filled with high-energy fighting scenes and hilarious comedy re-created from pivotal moments in the TV series. This movie first appeared in the U.S. on syndicated TV in 1989 when it was combined with the first movie into a single TV-movie pilot, which was done by Harmony Gold (creators of Robotech) in the first of two attempts made to get the DB TV series released in America. In this Harmony Gold TV pilot version, the characters had radically different names. When the series finally became a success in the US when aired on Cartoon Network, FUNimation re-dubbed it, making it more faithful to the original Japanese counterpart.

GRADE: 4 out of 5 stars
  • "Dragon Ball: Mystical Adventure" is the third and final entry of the original Dragon Ball movies. The previous two movies played out more as recaps of the series with a changed villain. Mystic Adventure does keep this tradition intact, recapping the Roshi Training, RR Army and 22nd Tournament, but it does so with a creative twist.

This one, more than any of the other Dragon Ball movies, feels like it takes place in an alternate Dragon Ball timeline. The characters are there, but their positions are all different. We have Chatsu running the Red Ribbon Army, with the Crane Hermit and Tao at the command. Pilaf and the gang help build a dragon radar for the army. Bora is there as a contestant for the martial arts tournament. And hey, let's throw in Korin, Major Metallitron and Arale in there as well.

The story centers on Chatsu wanting to collect the Dragon Balls to find his lost wife. Meanwhile, Goku and Krillin are participating in the emperor's martial arts tournament. In actuality the emperor is being fooled by the Crane Hermit to collect the Dragon Balls so he can make his wish. This is at conflict with Bulma, Yamcha and the gang who are also searching for the DragonBalls.

Hearing the description of the set up, you may already notice the main problem with the story. At a 48-minute runtime, that is a lot of material to stuff into one movie. It is a lot of fun for Dragon Ball fans, but admittedly really confusing to those who aren't. And for both crowds it is very rushed.

Still a ton of fun, brings in the DragonBall magic, but it needs to take a breath, it is like one really long run on sentence that just abruptly ends.
  • As a long time fan of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z I am excited to see this finally find release in the United States. This movie spins off of the early Dragon Ball Tournament Saga very smoothly with a short scenic summary of Goku and Krillin's (Kuririn) training under Master Roshi. There is a lot of good fun and some nice action sequences, including tournament fighting hosted by Chaozu. Familiar Dragon Ball characters are there, including Bulma, Oolong, Yamcha and Pu'ar, and some new characters are introduced, including Tien and the aforementioned Chaozu. Very funny and overall quite enjoyable, though uncut this may be a little too suggestive for many children. I highly recommend this to all Dragon Ball or DBZ fans as well as any fan of lighthearted anime; I actually enjoyed this movie more than many of the Dragon Ball Z movies that follow it.

The third and final movie from the first Dragon Ball series.

A bit weaker than the previous two, in my opinion, but still pretty entertaining.

While the first movies did recycled some scenes from the series, "Mystical Adventure" is more blatant in that retelling aspect.

There were a couple of interesting changes however. The most notorious one being the deaths of Pilaf, Mai and Shu at the very beginning (Considering the effect they had in the atrocious Goku Black saga from the awful Dragon Ball Super series, makes me wish that have happened in the main canon too) and the very cool new setting: Truth to be told, I prefer the Mifan empire than Papaya Island for the martial arts tournament.

Also poor Yamcha, being unable to catch a break. His humilliating defeat here during his fight against Bora due the intervention of Roshi makes me think the writers already something against him. Why did Roshi even do that?

A pretty decent movie, very entertaining, but a bit rushed in a few parts. And despite the small role played by Arale here, it already shows how the story of Dragon Ball was already taking a more serious direction.

Then this is the third film dedicated to the first series of Dragon Ball I have already said the plot There is no need for me to tell myself and I tell you that I don't understand why there hasn't been someone who has given me a bad rating I'm your son first to do it the reason I didn't like it at allthis film because this is my opinion that for me This film is truly the most useless film of the entire Dragon Ball universe and for what reason Well the reason is because even if the previous two films were alternative versions the manga and the 'anime is more to less introduced putit introduced new opposing characters Instead here there are already old acquaintances already reviewed already seen But here they will have changed a little year of the plot for me I didn't like it I know you're closing only made to last 45 minutes but this doesn't really make sense for me and then nothe doesn't even have interesting fights he only has useless ones and then the bad guy in this film his followers in the series belonged in the red ribbon to you I feel like I'm the blue general it's metallis but I don't know now why ragù No in this bad guy and then they write to each other at an arts tournamentmartial Find me anyway manga and anime and then the opponents last briefly because since this film lasts too short but something that is truly a stretch when Tao Pai Pai throws a blow at Goku was sent to Kalid's obelisk But why do you do something like that. The only positive thingof this film and when Tao Pai Pai was found inside the penguin village Of course because just recycling Dragon Ball wasn't enough and then the ending you don't know because it can only be seen in the end credits time I'm hiding Shenron to bring his father to life of Goku's friend This movie isit was just a waste of time for me and I was really the first to write you a very negative review for me it was one of the worst Dragon Ball films if the previous 2 the arrival quite appreciated in this one However this third one not to conclude the vote 3.
