Everybody must get stoned (for making this movie!)
Desultory Florida porn, MARY JANE was about what I expected from the trailer - a go-nowhere train wreck starring a bunch of actors trapped in a hotel room. Why the crew - also responsible for plenty of 16mm storefront slop like BODY & FENDER - decided to upgrade this particular non-narrative to 35mm is beyond my understanding.
The film gestures like it's going to try early on, opening with assorted shots of Florida ports and side streets following a charming low-fi credits sequence. A guy, Jack (Jack Colt - though every character in the film just goes by their thesp's pseudonym) picks up a girl and takes her to his hotel, where a merry band of brigands awaits. Seems the pickup is part of a drug deal arranged by Marc (Marc Brock, best known as Dracula from the loopy Carol Conners vehicle THE BRIDE'S INITIATION), but Jack has grabbed the wrong girl! This lady is French, speaks with a silly accident, and seems confused why all these Americans are carting her around. Having been hanging around the hotel balling chicks (no other reason they're there - I guess they're just the guys' squeezes?), Marc heads out to take care of things himself, leaving Jack to cavort with the women.
Eventually Marc returns with another raven-haired girl who supposedly resembles the French one (I couldn't tell from my smeary video copy), and then the group just sits around having sex. I'm not sure if they were waiting for someone to come buy the drugs or what, but after the de rigeur orgy, Jack decides to take care of their unwelcome interloper when she pops out for a shower - but has he got her identity switched again?
Though overlong for the genre, MARY JANE wouldn't be bad as a storefront flick. It doesn't make a ton of sense and the sex is pretty poorly photographed (much looking like insert shots added later), but at least it's a coherent narrative with a beginning, middle, and end (with denouement provided - as usual - by a dumb last-minute twist that's at least darker than most films of this ilk). However, judged by the standards of a 35mm production, it's wanting. Despite the early feint toward exteriors and location shooting, the film is thereafter confined entirely to the hotel, and it slowly stagnates given how little is going on. None of the characters are particularly memorable, though Jack Colt's well-toned body is at least a welcome counterpart to the female flesh, so often paired with some of the ugliest male bodies on Earth in smut like this. Extremely hard-to-find and not at all worth the effort, MARY JANE is one more regional production that slipped through the cracks - spiced up with a bit of hardcore, though mostly just dragging on interminably. A real bummer of a caper flick, this one's for completists only.
