I first watched this movie when I was a teenager, and I have never forgotten the intense emotions that I felt. Dosti is my all-time favourite film; I have not seen another that has left me with a deeper impression. The story-line, at times, was quite unbelievable, but then this was Indian film-making. What is best about Dosti is the music --- just mesmerizing --- thirty years after I first heard it, it still resound in my ears, even though I have not heard it again till recently. And after years of searching, I finally managed to purchase a DVD of the film; unfortunately the quality isn't very good, and a great part of the English subtitles (I don't understand Hindhi) was missing. If anyone out there knows of where I can get a good quality DVD of the film with English subtitles, I would appreciate hearing from you.
  • I saw this on Amazon Prime Video Yesterday. It will move and stir you emotionally and definitely affect you morally. Bollywood don't make this kind of Stuff anymore. It was Simple and Elegant, nothing fancy. Its long movie but worth the time. Acting is superb and songs are good and meaningful. Somewhere on the line you will feel sorry for the characters and how they deal with life's challenges in their own way. Its one of the classic Gem. It's been made my Rajshree Production House which brought "Hum Apke Hai Koun". To my surprise they been making films since 1947.
  • Pure emotions. :')

And I could have never guessed that "Chaahunga main tujhe saanjh sawere, Fir bhi kabhi ab naam ko tere, Awaaj main na dunga, awaaj main na dunga." - is for a friend not a bewaffa. :D
  • First of all, I cannot believe no one has commented on this classic movie yet! I had the fortune of watching it for the first time last year and I was blown away! The honesty that the 2 almost unknown boys bring to the screen is unmatched. The movie tells the story of 2 lost - one blind and the other crippled - boys who God has given the gift of music. While they both realize they are the only ones left in the world to take care of each other, the true bonds of friendship surfaces. While the blind boy is looking for his sister, he also is making his friendship with the crippled boy stronger each day.

With some mind blowing music that brought out quite possibly Mohd. Rafi sa'ab's memorable classics like - "Chahoonga Mein Tujhe..." , "Jaane Waalon Zara..." etc, this movie is a beautiful treat to the ardent Bollywood fan. Acting wise both Sushil and Sudhir Kumar portray their roles with élan. Its a shame these 2 talents did not go beyond this mega block buster movie.

    A 10 without a doubt.
  • I watched this film a few weeks ago and really the first thought that crossed my mind was concerning the levels to which Indian cinema has come down in today's scenario. We can keep boasting about the strides that Bollywood has made in terms of professionalism and technology but where are films like Dosti and others gone? I guess it's all lost in the frenzy of commercialization and marketing.

Well, maybe I should not dwell too much on Bollywood's present state but say something about the golden era that is lost and that had films like Dosti, Guide, Tere Ghar Ke Samne and others. So, What a brilliant film this is - the emotions that it portrays and the feeling of comradeship which it brings out are simply a work of pure class. It's a story about friendship and in many ways dignity and self-respect. The performances are really good even though they have the stamp of the 60s melodrama, still it keeps the viewers involved and touches their heart. The music is exceptional with Mohd. Rafi Sahab at his very best with as many as 5 great solos to his credit. Laxmikant Pyarelal, the music directors, also take a lot of credit for the brilliant music.

All in all, this a classic and if you are interested in watching the best of Hindi cinema this one is a must for you.
  • I stumbled across this great movie in a somewhat unusual way. I was an American student in Cairo, on a fellowship to study Arabic, way back in 1971. I'm not sure exactly why I bought a ticket and went to see this movie, but I came out feeling as though everything in my life had changed, a little bit anyway.

I went back to America and then the search began. I found an old recording of the soundtrack -- made in Dum Dum, India as I recall. The songs were one of the best parts of the movie, and so in this way I came to know the soaring voice of M. Rafi, a man with a voice to rival Luciano.

But I could never find a videotape, or a DVD, or anything, until FINALLY this week I was able to order a DVD from Music House in the UK. I have my fingers crossed! :-) This review is mostly to let others know that there is a DVD out there.
  • It is one of the best movies I have ever seen. The dialogues are classic and the music by Laxmikant Pyarelal with the voice of Mohammad Rafi make this movie a top classic hit. The strange fact about the movie was that, it was low-budget and no major actor was ready to act in the movie. It was expected to undergo a huge flop, but due to its brilliant acting and awesome story it went a major hit. It portrays and outlines the friendship between a blind boy and a cripple. There is a famous dialogue in the movie where the the characters say that they sing on the street not to beg but to make people happy and out of happiness the people give them gift. Indeed its a true classic and inspiring movie
  • With the songs, EACH ONE OF THEM, more famous than than the most famous flavour of chocolate ice cream ( i was actually surprised to hear one or two songs (chahunga main tujhe saanjh savere) in the movie, i never knew they were in this context ) and with the leads' acting so profusely emitting a beatific note of innocence and simplicity; i finally discover why this, almost half a century old movie, is considered by the most intellectual and even the most imbecile persons related to the language; a saga and an unachievable and literally untouchable benchmark of the Indian cinema.

i am not an expert over the finances available and their utilization in the perfect way at that time, or even the BOMBAY of that time; but the detailed but simple sets and the overtly excited extras are a perfect personification of what those "golden times of cinema", and undoubtedly so, India, must have been.

the seemingly 'just another of those full of tragedies story with everything happy go lucky in the end' is rather a remarkable portrayal of one of the purest and strongest of human relations.

the simple and meaningful lyrics of the songs act like a majestically glowing beacon on top of a ship which arrives with perfectly refurbishing dialogues which are delivered with such proficiency that even the select few lines which might make (only an uninterested)viewer think of them as the 'boring emotional drama'; are wholly capable of taking responsibility for emptying tissue boxes in the house.

it doesn't really make you feel relaxed after a long day at work, it would not give you a lesson for your life, it can not lead you on a path for rediscovery, its not meant to go deep into your souls and shake some bones over there, and its never going to match your own inventory of dreams; BUT STILL, it somehow ends up making you smile, in a way which they refer to as 'straight to the heart'; with those tears still trying to trickle down your eye lids; and we all perfectly know where that emotion is placed on our list of special desired moments of life.so my recommendation, go on and make it a moment of your life. it surely will be one of the best two and a half hour memory of yours....
  • I watched the movie and can't resist appreciating one of the master class from Indian Cinema. What a depiction of friendship !! just amazing....This is third movie which broke me in tears , the first two being Mera Naam Joker and Shree 420. The two actors Sudhir Kumar and Shushil Kumar have performed as if they were born to play the role. They can't be so much bonded even in real life as they are in the movie. Direction is also perfect with each emotion being captured and portrayed so simply but vividly . Mohan bringing lantern for Ramu was just superb and the way Ramu's examination result is disclosed to Mohan at the end is so heart touching and emotional that one can hardly resist ones tears. I was lucky to watch it alone at night with no one around to disturb and was just captivated in the movie for 3 hours.

Three cheers to Tarachandji.....Hats off to you....

It will be a great injustice not to comment on songs. No wonder the film won all five best Filmfare awards of 1965. There couldn't be a better lyrics and better voice . I usually fwd the songs while watching a movie on DVD but this was an exception as the songs are worth listening. Md. Rafi at his best ...

It feels so bad that with so much advanced technology now a days in Bollywood somehow the real art and classics are lost and worst is that the loss is beyond repair with increasing commercialization and glamor. Gone are the days of real classics.

A must watch movie for all who love Indian Cinema.

  • Dosti is a good movie with an ordinary storyline but the 2 young boys look as if they are more gay partners than thick friends. Finally, when they unite the old lady "Mausi" saying you both live together adds to the agony. The "Raj kumari" young girl from the palatial villa falling sick & dying for 2 roadside singers is just undigestable. The crippled youngster Ramu who is shown as an exceptional student is being persuaded to study more by the school, neighbors, his friend & everybody in the movie. None of the cast did anything exceptional, it just is a flawed storyline & an over hyped movie. The movie is for week hearted hungry people who live on mercies.
  • I don't usually write review of the movies as there are millions who do and I am thankful to them. But this movie seemed like it didn't get its fare share of popularity/recognition when it should have. Yes, it was a hit movie of its time, yes people still listen to its songs now and then, but the movie, the actors, which no one knows about or talks about, deserve more than that. The lead actor Sudhir Kumar 'Mohan' beats many of actors even now. His smiley face makes my problems feel so small. He is smiling even when he is singing this heart wrenching song...'Jaane walon jara..' especially the line "Dekhta hoon tumhe..(I see you)" brought tears to my eyes. A blind man is seeing through you, when nobody else (with eyes) can or cares.. It was so gratifying that I had to watch it again and again. Ramu says to Mohan that you have such beautiful eyes and you are blind!! It is unbelievable. Yes, it was to me too. But the director 'Satyen Bose' has done such a great job with these 2 unknown actors that you immediately fall in love with them, with their friendship. You wish that you had friends like them... You wish that you could have such trust among your friends. Movie so simple, with such simple characters and very predictable storyline, which can do such a great job, is so hard to make now a days. Aah... such good old days... watch it with your family and enjoy the memory of your childhood days.

  • Dosti (1964) : Brief Review -

EPIC !!! Believe it or not, Inspiration, Emotion and Friendship, 3 Greatest Theories come together in ONE FILM.. Satyen Bose's Dosti is particularly known as a Great tale of Friendship but i don't understand how people can forget 2 other greatest theories told in the film? How many Bollywood films are there which can be called Great Inspirationally and Emotionally? Of course many, on Individual and single theories but how many has a combination of all it? Answer is None. That none is replaced by Dosti. I may have how to count fingures of 2nd hand to calculate how many times i cried while watching this film. What a high level tear-jerker it is. Apart from that what an Inspirational film it is. A disabled and handicapped boy fights all odds from bad to worse and then to worst and manages to emerge Successful. How emotionally impeccable this film is. Like i said a handicapped boy has to struggle a lot but emerges victorious and his only dear friend in this cruel world is a Blind Boy. How hard Writing Strikes.. The blind boy works hard to his limits just to see the handicapped boy tasting a success. Ultimately those conflicts created in cinematic liberty makes it even better with proper use of Sacrifice theme. That's how it becomes the Greatest Friendship tale ever told in Bollywood. Now, add those factors of Great emotional tear-jerker and Inspiration in that vessel of Greatest Friendship tale ever and see the results. Classic..? No. Masterpiece...? That's understatement. EPIC is the word to explain it. Hands down to Satyen Bose for 3 remarkable achievements in One film. Sushil Kumar and Sudhir Kumar presents a never seen before chemistry of best friends. Music of Laxmikant Pyarelal is Top Notch, Evergreen, Timeless, Outstanding and bla bla. Every song shines like a golden coin from Treasure box. Mohammad Rafi nailed it. "Chaahunga Main Tujhe Sanjh Savere", "Mera To Jo Bhi Kadam Hai", "Koi Jab Raah Na Paaye", "Jaanewalon Zara Mudke Dekho Mujhe" are Soulful, Unbeatable and deservingly popular since release. Dialogues of Dosti drives on realitic life path rather than walking on cinematic and dramatic path and that's why the film connects quickly. Story writing is One the Finest of All Time, i repeat all time. I just couldn't find a single scene to bash or which was difficult to digest. Sublime i say. Screenplay too is not down at all, it keeps the level high as the story. Bollywood may have another film made on Friendship which could be better than Dosti, Bollywood may have another emotional film which could be better than Dosti, Bollywood may have another film made on Inspirational plot which could be better than Dosti, but Bollywood and Indian Cinema can never have that One Film which will have these 3 Greatest Theories included in One Film like DOSTI.... Finally, a rarest of rare 10/10* Bollywood Film for me.

    RATING - 10/10*

You can't rate these type of movies. Even 10 rating is less for it. Such an excellent piece of work 🙏👏👏
  • It's an emotional movie showcasing how difficult life is and we should respect for what we have in our life. We should also help to those who need help. It's a movie for emotional people. It will bring tears to your eyes.
  • I have been hearing songs of this movie ever since my childhood. This is the only reason why i decided to watch it. It's a very low budget dull melodrama which becomes a complete drag only after couple of minutes. Full of childish dramatic scenes coupled with pretty bad acting by almost everyone in this movie,it's hard to care for characters. Script is lazy, editing it choppy,it appears that only money producer spent was on few little outdoor shots. The scene at police station is so illogical ,it seems to have been written by a four year old child. It throws one melodramatic scene one after another with much logic. Such stories works good on stage not in a movie. It's like you are watching a stage drama where you get a new scene after the curtain is lifted. A completely boring childish silly mess. I gave it a rating of ten just because of the super hit songs which i can never cease to listen through all my remaining life.
  • Dosti" is a classic Hindi film released in 1964, directed by Satyen Bose. It is widely regarded as one of the finest films in Indian cinema and remains an iconic movie that explores the themes of friendship, compassion, and the resilience of the human spirit.

The film tells the heartwarming story of two physically challenged boys, Ramu and Mohan, who meet in an orphanage and form an instant bond. Despite their disabilities, they find solace in each other's company and support each other through the trials and tribulations of life. The movie beautifully portrays the strength of their friendship and highlights the power of unconditional love and sacrifice.

The performances in "Dosti" are exceptional, with the two lead actors, Sushil Kumar and Sudhir Kumar, delivering outstanding portrayals of Ramu and Mohan, respectively. The supporting cast, including Sanjay Khan, Baby Farida, and Leela Mishra, also deliver commendable performances.

One of the film's standout aspects is its memorable music, composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, with lyrics penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri. The songs, such as "Chahoonga Main Tujhe Saanjh Savere" and "Rahi Manwa Dukh Ki Chinta," have become timeless classics and continue to resonate with audiences even after decades.

"Dosti" successfully addresses societal issues, such as disability and social discrimination, in a poignant and sensitive manner. It sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and advocates for a more inclusive and compassionate society.

The film's direction by Satyen Bose is remarkable, as he masterfully balances emotional moments with lighter scenes, ensuring that the story never feels heavy-handed. The narrative keeps viewers engaged throughout, evoking a range of emotions, from laughter to tears.

Overall, "Dosti" is a cinematic gem that has stood the test of time. Its portrayal of friendship and the triumph of the human spirit continues to resonate with audiences, making it a must-watch for anyone seeking a heartfelt and emotionally charged film experience.
  • Warning: Spoilers
A movie is all about journey and journey is all we want to portray on big screen, but presenting a simple journey so beautifully is in itself a skill.

Dosti (Friendship) is a relationship we all experience once in life but only few understands the true meaning. Friendship is a beautiful relationship, we tend to ignore the simplicity in such relationship between people.

Songs are just icing on cake, listening to them is different but you truly get the feel of those songs when you immerse yourself in emotions of two characters.

Most moving scene was when the little girl dies, she only remembers her only friends.
  • This movie will overwhelm you, too much of pain and love together. Friendship, kindness,Life, love, sacrifice everything. Inspite of poor acting by the side characters this movie is bundle of emotions. Keep the tissue handy. Every time you feel you need more luxury in life. Go watch it. Struggle of the main characters are hard hitting. Mohan the blind guy character is so heart wrenching, the way he loved his friend is beyond anything. The pain he felt when he felt abandoned by his sister and friend will make you cry.

Mohammad Rafi sir voice will melt you to the core, specifically with the last two songs.
