Johnny, who played Boomer, reportedly earned thirty-five hundred dollars a week while appearing on the series, and had a stunt dog who stood in for him on some of his more difficult tricks.

Boomer in all of the shows was played by a four-year-old mixed-breed dog named Johnny the Dog, who was trained by Ray Berwick.

The television movie A Christmas for Boomer (1979) served as the pilot for the series.

Johnny, who played Boomer in this series, also played a dog named Boomer in The Red Hand Gang (1977).
