Julia Stiles has spoken about her experience working on Down to You and how Harvey Weinstein’s involvement altered the film. During an appearance on the Films To Be Buried With podcast, Stiles described how reshoots pushed by Weinstein forced her into a dance scene that she felt was unnecessary.
“It was a time when teen rom-coms were really popular,” Stiles said. “The director [Kris Isacsson] wrote the script. He was a first-time director and a very, very intelligent, capable guy. The script was very good. And then Harvey Weinstein got his hands on it and decided to capitalize on this trend. And it just became dumb.”
The actress recalled being told that, due to the success of Save the Last Dance and 10 Things I Hate About You, Weinstein wanted her to perform a dance sequence. “They’re pouring money at it in stupid ways,” she said. “So when we went and did reshoots,...

When you think back to cinema in the 1990s, there's a lot that the decade had to offer. There were some groundbreaking horror movies, a plethora of action classics, and, of course, a ton of romantic comedies that focused on young adults finding themselves, and each other. Two of the big stars to come out of the decade were undoubtedly Julia Stiles and Freddie Prinze Jr., who were paired together in the year 2000 for the film Down to You, which Stiles now says was completely ruined by disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein.
Appearing on Brett Goldstein's Films to Be Buried With podcast, Stiles spoke about her time on the set of Down to You, which was directed by Kris Isacsson and starred her and Prinze Jr. as young lovers who meet in college and go through the ups and downs of a relationship. Julia Stiles has opened up about feeling "slimy" while filming a 2000's rom-com movie. She blamed Harvey Weinstein for ruining her experience with his changes to its original screenplay.
As reported by Variety, Stiles appeared on Brett Goldstein's Films To Be Buried With podcast, and she talked about performing a dance scene in the romantic comedy Down to You, where starred opposite Freddie Prinze Jr.Stiles praised the film's original script and Prinze as a "lovely, wonderful actor" but didn't have such kind words for Harvey Weinstein, the head of Miramax who ordered extensive post-production changes to the director's original cut of the film.

"[The script was] very good," Stiles remarked. "Then Harvey Weinstein got his hands on it and decided to capitalize on this trend… and it just became dumb." She was referring to the early 2000s teen romantic comedy boom, which led to her own rise to fame as well as Prinze's.

Julia Stiles appeared on Brett Goldstein’s “Films to Be Buried With” podcast and remembered feeling “slimy” when she was forced to perform a dance scene in the 2000 rom-com “Down to You” after Harvey Weinstein took control of the production. Stiles said Weinstein ruined the movie.
“Down to You” paired Stiles with Freddie Prinze Jr. in the story of two college students who fall for each other and have an up-and-down romance. The movie was made during the teen rom-com boom, when both actors became icons of the year prior thanks to the hits “She’s All That” and “10 Things I Hate About You.” Stiles called Prinze a “lovely, wonderful actor” and said the “Down to You” script was “very good. Next month, the story of Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar can be revisited by Peacock subscribers. On March 1, the 20-year-old movie Brokeback Mountain will start streaming on Peacock.
Directed by Hulk helmer Ang Lee, Brokeback Mountain was a neo-Western drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal and the late Heath Ledger. Written by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, the film is based on the original story by Annie Proulx. Because of the same-sex intimacy involving the main characters, the movie was met with controversy at the time of its release, but it nevertheless drew widespread praise, resulting in major Academy Award nominations.

The promenade dance, commonly referred to as a prom, is a dance party that high school students attend and which is typically held near or at the end of the school year. The event may be for either junior or senior year students individually or act as a combined event that includes both demographics. A Prom King and Queen may be revealed as well, and the event is noteworthy for many of those who attend. Girls may spend months looking for the perfect gown to wear at prom, which may end up being quite pricey as well. Providing a corsage for a prom date is another important aspect of prom, one which is meant to signify generosity and consideration and which should complement the colors of the dress for a unified look.

Despite releasing at the end of 2023, one of 2024's biggest sleeper hits at the box office was "Anyone But You," a romantic-comedy starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney as former lovers who cross paths at a destination wedding and pretend to be a couple in order to placate their respective families. Given the film's financial success, it shows a potential bright future for the rom-com genre, which in recent years has struggled to have the success it once had throughout the 2000s with hits like "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and "Knocked Up."
Thanks to "Anyone But You," there are a lot of audiences with a renewed interest in satiating their desire for a raunchy, laugh-out-loud rom-com, especially ones with the hard-to-resist enemies-to-lovers trope, a disastrous wedding, or perhaps a reinterpretation a well-known story in the modern era. Matthew Lawrence recently said on the “Magical Rewind” podcast that the only time he got into trouble on a film or television set was when Gabrielle Union allegedly reported him. According to Lawrence, the incident occurred after he declined Union’s offer to rehearse their lines together on the set of their 1999 TV movie “H-e Double Hockey Sticks.” Lawrence starred in the film as a hockey player who becomes the target of a young devil, played by podcast co-host Will Friedle.
“There was this one moment where — and, again, I’m oblivious, I had no idea — and [Gabrielle] wanted to rehearse. And I was like, ‘No, I’m good,'” Lawrence remembered (via Entertainment Weekly). “And she got angry and went and reported me to the director and the studio. With Valentine’s season finally here, the urge to watch rom-coms of the past and present is more prevalent than ever. Watching two people fall in love over the course of an hour and a half despite the wacky hijinks and shenanigans that get thrown their way offers a charming and romantic experience for audiences. Love stories have always been an important and beloved part of pop culture and media, but arguably no decade was better for the genre than the late 1990s and early 2000s.
From How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days to 13 Going on 30 to The Wedding Planner, that era produced beloved classics that still get referenced and watched in 2025. One classic 1999 film was not only the strongest of that era, but continued to be cherished by rom-com fans all the way through the modern day. 10 Things I Hate About You became a genre-defining classic thanks to...

Nothing quite screams the late aughts and early 2010's like a comedy loosely related to a classic work of literature. There was She's the Man starring Amanda Bynes, which was based on the William Shakespeare play Twelfth Night. There was the absolute classic that was 10 Things I Hate About You, starring Julia Styles and the late-great Heath Ledger, which was based on The Taming of the Shrew. In 2010, one comedy came about loosely related to Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. Now, Easy A starring Emma Stone, is coming to Hulu next month.

The theme song for "The Big Bang Theory" is a fast-talking deluge of pseudo-nerdy references that are juuust incorrect enough to drive real-life nerds a little big crazy. The full version of the theme, rarely played in its entirety before the show, included enough brainy references to be clever, however. It talks about bipeds evolving, the continent of Pangaea, and it contains the lyric "Australopithecus would really have been sick of us," which I deeply appreciate.
The theme song was written and performed by Canadian rock band Barenaked Ladies, the authors of the famously wordy 1998 hit "One Week." Gen-Xers can likely recite large portions of "One Week", although only committed Barenaked Ladies fans have memorized the entire thing. The band also had charting hits with "It's All Been Done" (also from 1998) as well as "Pinch Me" and "Too Little Too Late." Those paying attention to indie rock in 1992 likely heard...

Anyone who was around cinema in the early 2000s saw Julia Stiles take the romantic comedy genre by storm. 10 Things I Hate About You and Save The Last Dance were staples of any millenial film collection. She always had a certain something that made her stand out from other leads at the time. So it’s exciting to see her now take the directing route, as she embarks on this new path. A first film is tough, as it can really shape how an audience sees the types of films you’re wanting to make. And while I wasn’t a massive fan of the film (check out my review Here) there’s still plenty of potential for Stiles behind the camera.
I was able to speak with Stiles about her directorial debut, Wish You Were Here, and why she chose to adapt a novel for her first feature.

Julia Stiles’ recital of that emotional poem in 10 Things I Hate About You may have cued the waterworks, but she admits it was never supposed to be that emotional in the first place.
In an interview with Bustle released Wednesday, the actress and director of Wish You Were Here reflected on her breakout role as Kat Stratford in the teen rom-com in which she and Heath Ledger’s Patrick Verona fall in love. In one scene in particular, Stiles’ Kat recites an emotional poem to Ledger’s Patrick in which she expresses her heartbreak and feelings for him as she offers 10 things she “hates” about him.
“In the table read with the whole cast, I kind of just read it without any emotion and I do remember the director saying, ‘She’ll be more emotional next time,’ so maybe that sunk in,” Stiles recalled of the poem scene.

If you — like this millennial — found yourself growing up with movies like 10 Things I Hate About You, Down to You and Save the Last Dance, Stiles played a pivotal role in your budding cinematic taste. Beloved performer Julia Stiles is still keeping busy with romance projects in Hollywood, but this latest one sees her behind the camera as screenwriter and feature film director for the first time. Fans know Stiles from great titles like Save the Last Dance, the Jason Bourne franchise, State and Main, Dexter, and Hustlers, but the public might know her best from the 1999 classic, 10 Things I Hate About You. Yes, it's hard to believe that it's been more than 25 years since that rom-rom was released, just like it's hard to believe that it's been 17 years since the death of Stiles' co-star in that film, Heath Ledger. The late Oscar-winner starred as her bad-boy love interest, a budding romance we all rooted for.

With the recent release of Mufasa: The Lion King, Disney continues to revisit its beloved animated classics and breathe new life (or something) into the cherished stories, whether it be a sequel, spinoff, or live-action reboot. Back in 2019, Will Smith filled the shoes of fellow Oscar-winner Robin Williams when he took over the coveted Genie role in Aladdin for an acclaimed live-action take on the hit 1992 film, this time directed by Guy Ritchie. Mena Massoud played the beloved eponymous role and is now starring in a new romantic drama film directed by Julia Stiles (10 Things I Hate About You), Wish You Were Here.

The 1990s were an amazing time for comedy movies. Major stars like Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler seemed to be churning out one hit after another, dominating the box office with their seemingly endless stream of big laughs. Rom-coms also flourished during this era, with numerous major hits like Clueless and 10 Things I Hate About You consistently pleasing audiences with their enjoyable balance of humor and heart. No matter what your tastes were, there was bound to be something to make you laugh when you entered a movie theater in the '90s, even if it was cringe comedy.
However, not every great comedy from the '90s managed to achieve the same level of popularity or critical acclaim. Many hilarious films actually flew under the radar for the most part, falling in the shadows of other, more popular movies. Although these films may not have made as much of a splash,...

James McTeigue made an explosive directorial debut with the critically acclaimed V for Vendetta in 2005, and has since added five more movies to his resume. His last cinematic project was Breaking In, a home invasion thriller starring Gabrielle Union, released in 2018. Despite receiving mixed reviews initially, the movie managed to cultivate a modest fan following, thanks largely to Union’s powerful performance. Breaking In has recently become a free streaming hit, ranking #4 on Freevee.
Breaking In centers around Shaun Russell (Union), a mother who travels with her two children to her late father Isaac’s secluded mansion, with high-tech security features. She must make the final arrangements to sell the estate.
But their trip takes a dangerous turn when four criminals break into the house looking for $4 million that Isaac put in a safe. They also take the children hostage and lock Shaun outside the house. The twist on the...

10 Things I Hate About You star Julia Stiles remembers working with the late actor Heath Ledger on the teen comedy that would change the lives of all the young performers who worked in the film. Decades after they played Kat Stratford and Patrick Verona, Stiles recalls the "energy and passion" of the performer who sadly passed away in 2008 after an accidental drug overdose.
As reported by CinemaBlend, Stiles appeared as a guest on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, and spent some of her time reflecting on co-starring with Heath Ledger in the film. Stiles and Ledger played Kat and Verona, respectively, and the couple ultimately became one of the iconic duos in the '90s teen comedy sub-genre. Julia Stiles became widely lauded relatively early in her career for excellent romance films, from 10 Things I Hate About You to the Shakespeare modernization O and Save the Last Dance. She's taking on a brand role in the history of the romance genre via her directorial debut, Wish You Were Here. It's a moving drama about doomed love, with a strong central performance, heavy themes, and some genuinely great scenes. At the same time, the film's script shortchanges some essential moments, specifically as it pertains to the lovers at the film's center. Wish You Were Here consequently leaves the story's greatest potential unmet.

Julia Stiles looked back on her 2023 Saturday Night Live cameo on Monday, saying the sketch came together so quickly she struggled to find childcare in order to make it work.
“They contacted me the Friday before the Saturday show,” Stiles said during an interview on Watch What Happens Live. “I scrambled to find someone to take care of my kids until the middle of the night.”
At the time, the 10 Things I Hate About You star had recently welcomed her third child.
Stiles appeared during a segment of SNL‘s “Weekend Update” alongside cast member Chloe Fineman. Together, they recreated and extended the Juilliard audition scene at the end of 2001’s Save the Last Dance. Coincidentally, Stiles’ last experience with the sketch show had been in March 2001, when she hosted two months after Save the Last Dance‘s release.

No, you won't hear Pink Floyd's iconic rock song of the same name anywhere in Julia Stiles' feature directorial debut, and you won't see Stiles anywhere in Wish You Were Here, either. Stiles made a unique and shining name for herself with that tough-gal demeanor we all adored in throwback hits like 10 Things I Hate About You, but it does feature a talented little ensemble of other stars that mostly carries this new Lionsgate offering — based off Renée Carlino's acclaimed novel — all the way to the tear-jerking finish line.
Sappy tear-jerkers are hardly dead, from We Live in Time and Someone Like You to It Ends with Us and The Idea of You. Continuing that trend (which might as well be sponsored by Kleenex), you might just find yourself ugly-crying by the end of Wish You Were Here, its somber title alone perhaps striking a chord in the...

Teen comedies have been part of cinema since the 1980s. John Hughes elevated the genre with The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, and Weird Science. There was also a crop of fun teen movies in the '90s like She's All That, 10 Things I Hate About You, and Clueless. Audiences undeniably love these films because they're relatable and show a glorified version of high school, one where all the problems can be solved by the prom. Of course, not all teen movies are so wholesome and cookie-cutter.
Some teen movies go for broke with raunchy humor and nudity. R-rated teen comedies, which seemed to be the most popular in the 2000s, are arguably even funnier for certain viewers because they're not limited when it comes to sex and profanity. The best R-rated teen comedies offer self-aware commentary on what it means to be a teenager—and hold little back in the process.

Quick Links Who Was Will Friedle in Trojan War? Trojan War Gave Friedle's Brad a High-Octane Night
One of the hottest debates will always rage over who's the best Batman. Live-action fans are torn between Michael Keaton and Christian Bale. Of course, Zack Snyder fans love Ben Affleck's Dark Knight. On the cartoon front, Kevin Conroy stands atop the list. But Will Friedle is another iconic name associated with the genre due to his role, not as Bruce Wayne, but as Terry McGinnis from Batman Beyond.
Many loved how Friedle went dark and bleak, switching things up from his other most famous role: Eric Matthews on Boy Meets World. Interestingly, Friedle had a hilarious role in a 1997 teenage rom-com, Trojan War, that didn't go quite as dark as Terry, but just far enough to subvert what he was as Eric: a clumsy charmer. Chris Evans is one of the most charming actors of his generation. He can seemingly do it all, from cult action like Snowpiercer to starring as a scene-stealing supporting cast member in movies like Knives Out and The Gray Man. These films are excellent and have their own dedicated fan bases, but without a doubt, Evans is best known for starring as Captain America in nine MCU movies to date.
Before Chris Evans donned the star-spangled shield as Steve Rogers, he made his movie debut in an underappreciated comedy called Not Another Teen Movie. High school is a confusing but wondrous time. Raging hormones, developing social skills, and new romances are all part of the high school experience, and teen movies are a great way to relive the wonder years. Over time, cinema has captured the magic of first love, heartbreak, and first times in movies like 10 Things I Hate About You and Twilight.
Luckily, high school romances have diversified, and there is a teenage rom-com for everyone. Inclusive love stories and even supernatural ones have refreshed the high school romance movie genre, and these coming-of-age stories are better than ever today. When "10 Things I Hate About You" was released in 1999, it featured a cast of swoon-worthy young stars. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who wasn't sold on the movie at first), Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Larisa Oleynik were the film's core four, but the supporting cast was rounded out by actors like Gabrielle Union, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, and Allison Janney, and everyone delivers a fun performance. The contemporary movie is actually an adaptation of William Shakespeare's classic play "The Taming of the Shrew," setting the romantic comedy at a modern high school instead of the olden days. It's about a pretty girl named Bianca (Oleynik) who isn't allowed to date until her uptight older sister Kat (Stiles) is taken; as a result, Cameron (Gordon-Levitt) pays the rambunctious Patrick (Ledger) to woo Kat. Hijinks ensue.

This article briefly mentions abuse and misogyny.
William Shakespeare's extensive body of work has been subject to countless adaptations. Whether it's a film clearly based on Shakespeare's story or one with more subtle connections, there are plenty out there to choose from. One of these is the 16th-century comedy The Taming of the Shrew, which was memorably retold in the beloved 1999 teen movie 10 Things I Hate About You.
