As producer of the film, Barbra Streisand found herself on the receiving end of Charlton Heston's anger. Heston was president of the National Rifle Association at the time and took issue with the film's liberal stance on gun control, calling Streisand the "Hanoi Jane of the Second Amendment". Streisand's riposte was that she was all for the use of guns for hunting, but "you don't need an AK-47 to kill game and you don't need an Uzi to defend yourself".
