  • This is a landmark film - an output of the genius combination of Bharathan as director and Padmarajan as writer.

The film was unique, bold and controversial - certainly would have succeeded as it has only in the Malayalam film industry which has always been ahead of its times. It's a cult classic today.

The film is about adolescence and the confusions thereof driven by hormones. Something that everyone can relate to, but to bring it on screen with such remarkable twists in storytelling definitely reveals mastery of the art by the writer.

The film is about how a teenager is overwhelmed by feelings that are a mix of adoration, love and lust for his much elderly neighbour played superbly by Jayabharathi. She definitely gets into the skin of the character at various times enabling you to empathize exactly as the teenager feels. Her initial rebuke, sympathy and then understanding needed a veteran to play these sensitively and this was well done.

I have kept wondering if the ending could have been something else - but I guess that for another story in itself..
