The 1851 Navy Colt Revolver was a cap and ball gun; the ball (bullet), powder and cap would be loaded separately. These guns did not fire cartridges, so there would be no reason to have cartridges on his gun belt.
There were 1851 Navy Colt Revolvers that were converted to fire cartridges. However, close inspection in the movie will not reveal any signs of the conversion; including a breech plate or ejector rod.
