It cannot be understated how huge "Baywatch" was. It was a goofy show with lightweight drama, resting somewhere on a matrix that incorporated soap operas, "Gilligan's Island"-like sitcoms, and 1970s "jiggle" shows like "Charlie's Angels." The central appeal of "Baywatch" was, of course, witnessing attractive people in swimsuits running dramatically down the beaches of Los Angeles. David Hasselhoff's star stayed high in the sky thanks to "Baywatch," and many of his co-stars -- notably Pamela Anderson -- became world-famous. 

"Baywatch" debuted in 1989 and ran a powerful 241 episodes over 11 seasons, finally drawing to a close in 2001. The final two seasons were relocated to Hawai'i, and the title of the show was changed to "Baywatch: Hawaii," even though it retained the same cast and premise.

Say what you will about the Twilight books and films, one thing is certain: The films involved a lot of acting talent. Are they a bit too campy at times? Yes, and maybe the vampires are a bit too brooding for their own good. These works don't mine the emotional depth as the Harry Potter series does, but they still somehow entertain.

The movies are about much more than vampires. There are werewolves, too. After all, are you Team Edward or Team Jacob? That might depend on whether you want to be a vampire or a werewolf.

But the acting talent involved might be enough to push you through whatever you don't like about the campiness of the series. Robert Pattinson plays vampire Edward, who falls head over heels for Kristen Stewart's (Charlie's Angels), and vice versa, before werewolf Jacob (played by Taylor Lautner) sticks his dirty nose into their business.

Kristen Stewart didn’t just bet on herself. She practically threw her wallet out the window for On the Road. At the peak of her Twilight fame, when Hollywood was throwing checks at her like confetti, Stewart signed on to a film that paid her pennies compared to the blockbuster paydays she was used to. And she had zero regrets.

Back in 2012, Stewart starred in On the Road, a film based on Jack Kerouac’s legendary novel. The movie followed a wild cross-country adventure with Stewart playing Marylou, alongside Garrett Hedlund’s Dean and Sam Riley’s Sal. It was the ultimate road trip movie, packed with rebellion, freedom, and all the restless energy of Kerouac’s words (via Cheatsheet). The film also boasted a stacked cast – Kirsten Dunst, Amy Adams, Viggo Mortensen, and Elisabeth Moss – but it was still an indie project.

Patty Maloney, an actress whose 30-plus year career included memorable turns on Little House on the Prairie, Syd & Marty Krofft’s Far Out Space Nuts, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century and the Star Wars Holiday Special, has died. Her passing was confirmed via a post on the official Syd & Marty Krofft Facebook page. She was 89.

Maloney stood 3 feet 11 inches and weighed about 60 pounds. Her stature and pantomime stills meant she often worked in costume. And work she did, with memorable roles on some of the most popular TV shows of the ’70s an ’80s.

On her first series, the actress played the furry and funny Honk on the Kroffts’ Far Out Space Nuts, a character who spoke only in horn-like honks. The show was a Saturday morning staple for kids in the ’70s, especially via syndication. She also appeared on 13 episodes of The Krofft Superstar Hour and other of the duo’s shows.

Patty Maloney, the 3-foot-11 actress who played the alien Honk on the Sid & Marty Krofft family show Far Out Space Nuts and Chewbacca’s son, Lumpy, on the long-lamented Star Wars Holiday Special, has died. She was 89.

Maloney had suffered several strokes over the years and died Monday in hospice care in Winter Park, Florida, her brother, Dave Myrabo, told The Hollywood Reporter. “For a little person growing up in a big world, she did everything she wanted to do,” he said.

Maloney did lots of work alongside the 3-foot-10 Billy Barty. The two appeared together in the Wizard of Oz feature Under the Rainbow (1981), starring Chevy Chase, and on episodes of Little House on the Prairie, Charlie’s Angels, The Love Boat, Trapper John, M.D. and more.

Far Out Space Nuts, starring Bob Denver and Chuck McCann as bumbling maintenance workers turned accidental space travelers, aired for one season (1975-76) on CBS.

Shinichirō Watanabe is an anime auteur, most famous for directing 26-episode Space Western "Cowboy Bebop." The legacy of that show colors his career beyond just people remembering it as one of the best anime ever. Watanabe's later projects have sometimes felt like a response to or evolution of "Bebop." (His science-fiction musical drama "Carole & Tuesday" is set on the same terraformed Mars that "Bebop" often visited.)

The same can definitely be said of Watanabe's latest directorial project: "Lazarus." The series, animated at studio Mappa and produced by Sola Entertainment, is a 13-episode science-fiction action-thriller. Yes, the premise was fun, but most of the show's fans will sooner talk about how the original Angels -- Jaclyn Smith, Kate Jackson, and Farrah Fawcett -- were objects of their crushes. The makers of "Charlie's Angels" seemingly spent just as much time filming the Angels running in slow-motion as they did setting up plots or working on character development. 

The series followed three recent graduates of the LAPD's police academy who, despite their excellent fighting and crime-stopping skills, are given menial, sexist jobs that do not challenge them. Instead, they pursue a job with a secretive private investigation company, run by a wealthy, off-screen benefactor named Charlie Townsend (John Forsythe). He gives them assignments in secret (Charlie has a lot of enemies) and nicknames them his "Angels."

In trying to take on slick Hollywood thrillers like Mission Impossible and Charlie’s Angels, Mani mingles history with hearsay, fact with fiction, and escapist thrills with pseudo-documentation. The director doesn’t quite negotiate the distance that divides our cinema from Hollywood. But he makes a defiantly direct effort to make an uncompromised, historically rooted spy thriller, which is more in the league of the Nick Carter pulp novels than the films of Brian de Palma or Ridley Scott.

For a comedian as beloved as Bill Murray, the guy sure has a long history of bad behavior. He spent six figures paying off that “much younger” crew member he straddled on the set of Aziz Ansari’s directorial debut. He yelled at Geena Davis on the set of Quick Change when he wasn’t trying to use a vibrating massager on her off-camera. He told Lucy Liu she “couldn’t act” during Charlie’s Angels, earning punches in return. But he saved some of his worst behavior for What About Bob?, his hit ‘90s comedy with Richard Dreyfuss.

Far Out recently rounded up a series of troubling stories about Murray on that film’s set, including throwing producer Laura Ziskin in a lake. She told the Los Angeles Times that Murray tossed her in “playfully,” but the argument leading up to it was anything but. If only that was the end of it.

The new Cameron Diaz movie has become a global streaming sensation. Raunchy rom-com There's Something About Mary is climbing the streaming chart, currently sitting at number six on Hulu. The film went on to earn nearly $370 million at the global box office against a $23 million production budget. Production is scheduled to commence later this year on the story of a young woman, desperate to find her missing sister, who along with her three friends must fight her way through a virtual reality horror game where death becomes real.

Two Ghostbustersare set to co-star in a new odd couple comedy movie from director Max Barbakow (Brothers). Per Deadline, Bill Murray, who starred in 1984’s Ghostbustersand its subsequent sequels, will star alongside Kristen Wiig, who played Erin Gilbert in 2016’s Ghostbusters reboot (also known as Ghostbusters: Answer the Call).

The film, titled Epiphany, will be launched this week in Berlin at the European Film Market by Rocket Science, CAA Media Finance, and Range Media Partners. Epiphany stars Wiig as Favorite Ives, who is a fashionista and heiress who loses her fortune overnight.

Favorite then goes on a two-week mission to find a rich husband while she fights creditors and tries to keep a roof over her head. Wiig’s Favorite then meets Oz Bell (Murray), who is an eccentric billionaire and also a math savant and Oz ends up needing Favorite’s “spirit and spontaneity as much as she needs his money.

Veteran TV and film actor Peter Navy Tuiasosopo, known for his work on Street Fighter, Necessary Roughness and The Fast and the Furious among many others, died Monday, his son Manoah Peter Tuiasosopo announced on Facebook. He was 61.

“With a heavy heart, my family and I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. Our father Peter N. Tuiasosopo passed away this morning at 3:16 am,” he wrote. A cause of death was not revealed in the Facebook post, but his son told TMZ his father died from heart complications in Phoenix, Arizona.
