  • to take on a role that became so identified with an actor. Particularly when the actor died while performing the character. Brandon Lee was just entering his prime when he tragically lost his life while filming the motion picture "The Crow". After he died the film took on an almost mythical aura to it. For anyone who has seen the sequel movies you know how the actors playing the title role has fallen flat. Yet in this television series the star managed to avoid the trap of simply doing an imitation of the late star. Mark Dacascos took the role of Eric Draven and made it his own.

While there is a vast difference between this series and the parent movie, the producers should be applauded for not trying to do a simple carbon copy. They knew they could not get away with the more graphic and disturbing elements of the source material and instead tried to capture the overall feel of "The Crow". The series spends more time on the emotional turmoil that Draven deals with being dead while existing in the world of the living, and having to do what he can to get back to the one thing he came back for.

For those who claim that Dacascos is just a pale imitation of Lee and that the series does not go as far as the first movie did into the Gothic I have to say take off the blinders and look at this for what it is. It doesn't try to be Brandon Lee's "The Crow", it just tries to be a syndicated television series based on the same source material.

    Warning: Spoilers
"You are a prophet," I cried, "prophetic! Are you a bird or an ominous spirit, This Heaven that is above us - God hidden forever - I conjure, begging, to tell me - within the boundaries of Paradise Will the saint reveal to me that among the angels there is always The one who is always called Lenora in heaven?

    Raven croaked: "Never."

The original "The Crow" was a complete story with a running time of less than two hours, which generally did not need any sequels or other adaptations. But, as regularly happens, the established cult status of the film gives rise to a series of controversial prequels and sequels and the fashion for serial adaptations that began in the second half of the nineties (here we can also recall the rather successful variations on the theme of "Highlander" and "Mortal Kombat") also did not pass by.

The series tries to follow the form set by the original in everything. In this sense it works out well. Here we have the main character in the person of Mark Dacascos, who knows martial arts and is similar in appearance to Brandon Lee, and a familiar teenager, and a good underground soundtrack, among which you can find names like Crystal Method or Rob Zombie, maniacs and mystics in adequate proportions.

In terms of content, everything was rather more lackluster. Not a trace remains of the former gothic gloomy atmosphere, if it manifests itself, it is rather like this, in separate elements. The main character makes jokes that aren't funny, he only tries on makeup when he's angry, and the fights, on average, look short and bland.

The plot aspect is also worth noting. The events of the first film here crumple into the first two episodes, after which the plot takes a somersault and the wild imagination of the authors begins. It balances from fairly insipid detective stories of the level of what is shown today on some third party channels, to at times extreme absurdity in the spirit of the sixteenth episode about the spirit of the evil Rasputin, who wants to be reborn by the power of russian cultists who accidentally wandered into the USA. A good half of the episodes as a whole are in no way connected with each other and do not advance the main storyline. It looks as if the authors didn't know how to fill the 22 "mandatory" episodes. But more time could have been devoted to the mystical subtext, the development of the alter ego line, which will be noted only at the very end..., or to the woman who found herself in a similar situation. If we count those that in one way or another specifically affect the hero's line, we get something like this: 1,2,8,9,11, 12 +/-, 13, 14, 18, 19, 20, 22. That is. 12 episodes out of 22.

The series has an open ending. Apparently a second season was planned, but as with "Mortal Kombat: Conquest" (1998-1999), it never saw the light of day.

Objectively, if abstract from what came before the original film, if Dacascos weren't here, who in general carries almost the entire story on himself, the soundtrack and a series of certain features, I would probably give it a couple of points lower and a red mark. But...
  • I think this show is one of the best on television. Mark Dacascos is a young and refreshing actor that proves he is not just an action star who survives by starring in no story action films. Dacascos branches outside of what he is used to in order to play a reincarnated soul of dead man brought back by a crow in order to set things right after his girlfriend is killed. The ongoing battle of good vs. evil continues as Eric Draven is brought back to life to set things right. Mark Dacascos is great in the television version of the film that would turn out to be Brandon Lee's last. Every week, I can't wait to see the next episode because it is a unique series in that the writers come up with new stuff to write about. I like how the series goes back and forth between the world as it currently is and the way it was when Eric Draven and his girlfriend Shelly lived in happier times. Everything about this show from, storylines, music, and setting scream HIT!!!!! From its star Mark Dacascos to the supporting cast which includes the police detective whom he helps out by catching criminals; this series deserves to be seen during the week when everyone has the chance to see how great it is.
  • (Spoiler alert!)

I was not excited when I learned of the show coming to television, but after they closed off the initial story arc and continued with new material, it took off and had the potential to be a great series. Separating The Crow as an alternate entity was brilliant and having Shelly remaining on the bridge to the afterworld held the original premise of the show.

Also, Demascos was terrific as Eric. He maintained the look Branden Lee originated, and also made the martial arts natural and well-integrated into the action sequences.

I only wish the series would get released in DVD so I could see the episodes again.

This series was pathetic. It had bad acting, overworked special effects and wimpy bad guys. As a fan of the original film, I found the series as a boring watered down version of an excellent story. In the film, not only did Brandon Lee kill people, he looked as if he could, whereas this wannabe Mark Dacascus looks as if he couldn't punch his way out of a paper bag.Anyway, if you want action go and see the Brandon lee version, as Stairway to Heaven is more of a soap opera. As I said, the series is simply watered down, and it just contains scenes from the original movie, but has cut out some of the interesting characters and the more energetic fights and trash talking. but if you'd rather not think too much then hey, why not watch Stairway to Heaven. Really though, its just too soppy for me. In the Crow, both movie and comic, Eric Draven was a tortured, vicious individual who wanted to tear apart the people who had ruined his life/death. But Mark Dacascus' character is content to simply scare them into being better people. That really doesn't cut it for me. If someone had brutally murdered you and your fiancé, wouldn't you be walking around in the red haze? I think you would, and I know I would too. I think that maybe this series was targeted at a younger audience which would warrant the toned down violence, less objectionable drugs and less gruesome weaponry. But really they were the things that made the movies as dark and confronting as they were. Oh well. I suppose you can't win 'em all.
  • The first thing I have to say here is that a reboot, remake, sequel, prequel or any other type of film about Draven should never be allowed to happen. Brandon's Draven may have differed from the comics some but it was perfect for a film adaptation and it was haunting and perfect. Thus it should be left alone and allowed to be the definitive and only Draven film. If Hollywood cannot get the reboot idea out of its head let it reboot one of the other Crow characters,

All of this said a tv show within an acceptable time period after the film is acceptable and if I had to pick one and only one person to ever attempt Draven again it would be Brandon's real life friend and ultra talented martial artist Mark Dacascos. He has the Draven look and while this was a slightly less hostile take on the character it was similar enough while different enough to delve into the character again and done so honorably and respectfully by Dacascos. It suffers from a little of the cheesiness of the time it was produced in but if anything that adds to the charm of it. As someone who holds the original The Crow movie in extremely high regard this show would be the one and only other Crow adaptation I would ever recommend a fan to see.
  • After watching the REAL Crow, if you watch the "The Crow series", you just want to cry... It is freaking ridiculous! Don't watch that!! You'll want to suicide, it is really a bad remake... All the mystery, the dark side of all the story is completely destroyed! That series was a real mistake... Even the special effects in the first movie, filmed 4 years earlier, were better than these ones. Plus, the actors doesn't fit in the story, the casting director is really a clown, or he was doped when he chose the actors. The producer certainly gave the budget of the film to the casting director for buying his dope, or he really doesn't know how to manage a budget..Don't pay for this dumb TV series, don't even borrow them from someone, you'd really want to cry!
  • "The Crow" is one of my favorite comic book series of all time along with the movie. When I caught the news about a series loosely based on it, I'll admit I was excited. Back then comic book TV series weren't very commonplace at the time. This show is another under the radar gem, it's not really overlooked as this show has received some popularity in the past. But as time went on this show has been somewhat forgotten.

One of the things I really like about the series is that it explored the fantasy/supernatural aspect and world of "The Crow" a little more. Like for example seeing there is more than one Crow or one kind of Crow, like the character Talon a female crow which was interesting and makes sense as it's not just true to the function of the Crow spirit but the comic series which has always had different people take the Crow mantle.

But also, an evil version of the crow called "The Snake" which I thought was interesting, either someone using the powers for evil or another higher force is at work but on the opposite end of the spectrum. Just a lot of things, though one thing I would of liked for the series was to get into some folklore territory; ok that sounds a little more like "Hellboy" and "Grimm" but why not and it fits since "The Crow' is a dark fantasy.

But one thing I really like the most about the show is the emotional aspect which to me was always the heart of the franchise. I really like that we get a little more depth for the characters like Sarah played well by Katie Stewart we see both have more back and forth but also depth into the friendship both have for each other and Shelly.

I even like how we get into both Eric and Shelly's relationship and both as characters. From what more we learn about them it just makes it all the sadder and the tragedy all the weighty. Along with Eric's journey where it feels like he's so close but also so far to reunite with Shelly.

Mark Dacascos whom I think is an underrated martial arts star is solid as Eric Draven, to me he's my second favorite version of "The Crow" he's got good charisma. The action scenes are solid and well-choregraphed, really liked seeing Mark just put the moves on to the bad guys.

The only turbulence this show had was really the show's slight budget limitations, which is why we don't really get to see the Crow in the dark gothic noir alternate American atmosphere let alone the fact some bits of violence is toned down, even a CGI effect or two isn't very good (this was a network TV version of "The Crow" so what do you expect). But this didn't bother me at all or too much, because despite certain budget limitations they worked well with what they had, we still had the noir aspect if modern and the violence was still on a good level, and very little CGI special effects so I really can't complain too much.

However, the main problem with the show like most of these under the radar shows is its flight was canceled, season one ended on a cliffhanger note. Which was too bad because this show was truly gaining altitude opening itself up to more possibilities, maybe we could have had some mini arcs based on more of the graphic comic series "The Crow" where there is more than one. I don't know sadly the only way this series will ever continue is in the realm of "Fanfiction".

Personally, I would love to see "The Crow" made into a TV series again, but it would have to be on a premium channel and an even bigger budget and production value, let alone get the right person to play Eric Draven. Or even an animated series but for adults, get a good ensemble of voice actors like get Mark Dacascos to voice Eric Draven or any other character.

Or better yet, make the series go the anthology route where each season is based on a different crow character which was the exact route the comic book series took as there have been different people that have taken on the crow and stories with it, their flight paths worth considering anyway.

Crow: Stairway to Heaven is on the right flight path.

    Rating: 3 stars

I stumbled upon this 1998-1999 TV series as part of sitting through a "The Crow" movie marathon here in 2023. I remember seeing it sometime back in the stores back in the 2000s, but never actually got around to watching it. And seeing that it had Mark Dacascos on the cast list definitely was a convincing argument to sit down and watch it.

As much as I enjoyed the original "The Crow" movie that starred Brandon Lee, then I have to say that this 1998-1999 TV series was just a slap to the face. Couldn't they have come up with a new character, a new storyline and left Eric Draven for the portrayal done by Brandon Lee?

I was in no means or ways interesting in a re-interpretation of the original movie from 1994, which was what "The Crow: Stairway to Heaven" turned out to be. And it was just cringeworthy to sit there and watch the same storyline being told, but with added material and such. It just felt utterly unnecessary for this series to have been made, and I have to say that it felt like a mockery of the 1994 movie and of Brandon Lee's legacy.

Sure, the acting performances in "The Crow: Stairway to Heaven" were good, and there are some good talents on the cast list. But it was just distasteful to sit through this and watch everything anew and watch the beloved characters from the 1994 movie being reinvented and presented in a new light throughout this series. Mark Dacascos certainly was well-cast for the series, but it was just difficult to accept him taking over on the iconic performance left by Brandon Lee.

"The Crow: Stairway to Heaven" is something I have delved into once here in 2023, and it will forever be shelved and forgotten. I have to say that I was really, really disappointed in what this series turned out to be. Especially since they had so much untapped potential for new storytelling, new characters, etc., but instead they cashed in on the 1994 movie and made a mockery of it.

My rating of "The Crow: Stairway to Heaven" lands on a three out of ten stars.
  • First there was the cult following for the Highlander Movie. The sequels were not up to the originals. The series followed. People had a fit. But Adrian Paul (and every recurring character on there) changed everything. He IS the Highlander. The show took on a life of its own, and it certainly didn't confine itself to the boundaries of the movie.

Next there was La Femme Nikita. Point of No Return followed in the US and it was a pale comparison. Then the series followed. Peta Wilson (& Roy Dupuis and the rest of the excellent cast) changed everything. Now she IS Nikita. This show also soared way above and beyond where the movie couldn't go.

And finally, there was the classic Crow movie which gave the world a short glimpse of a brightly shining comet that soared across the sky. His name was Brandon Lee and may he rest in peace. Vincent Perez followed with a different (and really quite decent) turn of the crow that few liked, more out of respect to Brandon than anything. Immortality and all that. There was something missing, just like with Highlander 2 and 3, and with Point of No Return. Then along came the series The Crow:Stairway to Heaven. Slowly, because yes, there are big shoes to fill. A legacy to continue. And a fanbase who is fanatically loyal to Brandon Lee. Mark Dacascos is changing things once again. Bryce Zabel and Marc Gomes, and Katie Stuart and everyone else are good at what they do, and the show is starting to gel in the middle of the first season. They honored the story, while keeping different avenues open. Some things have changed, some things have stayed the same. It IS a good show. It is the BEST show on TV besides LFN, right now. No one could fill Brandon's shoes, but my friends, no one can fill Mark's either. He is a real talent. A graceful, expressive man. And a master of martial arts. So put your comparisons aside. Like Highlander and La Femme Nikita, The Crow:Stairway to Heaven has a life of its own. Brandon would have wanted it that way. You can't go back. It's not the movie, it wasn't meant to be. You have to go beyond the boundaries, just like it does. They have good writing, and good atmosphere, and good music and good acting and good action sequences. What more do you want? Let The Crow Fly.....

My favorit film. I love Eric Draven.

My favorite series as a child now I watch it again with great interest.
  • "Crow: Stairway to Heaven" was one of the best television shows I have seen on television. With his role in this television series, Mark Dacascos, a young and refreshing actor, proved he was not just an action star who survives by starring in no story action films.

  • This TV series version of the crow explains a little better how The Crow comes to be and what his motivation is.There's action tenderness, while Draven searches for the one thing he wants the most...to be reunited with his lost love Shelley...A must for the true crow fans .....I give it two thumbs up....Brandon Lee would be proud of Mark Dacascos's portrayal of Eric draven. There's a great support cast too. Sabine Karsinti plays Shelley Erics love,Mark Gomes plays erics friend the cop. This series has something for everyone.I highly recommend this if your a crow fan.Mark Dacascos gives Eric Draven a sense of humor which makes for great entertainment. They end the series beautifully....

This is a good alternative to the usual television viewing. At least it is more original than most shows on tv. I really liked the movie and the series has a way to go to match it, but overall the show is improving.
  • The show is basically a different take on the first Crow movie. The storyline varies to different degrees at times but they same characters and essential storyline including the murders of Draven and his girlfriend are the same. Draven wakes up to the reality his girlfriend is dead and as far as the world is concerned so is he. He has been sent back to take vengeance on those that murdered them, but in this version there is a twist. When vengeance is taken on those that took away his life and girlfriend shellys, there is a consequence that he must face and it is brought to him by those he has punished. The twist in plot took some getting used to but it still ran well with the first movies. Draven finds himself sent back here to set things right for others and more so to stop them from going wrong, usually being introduced to their stories when the characters are halfway there already. Draven does get SOME vengeance but in turn learns that no matter what he does he can not change what happened and retribution against those that so wronged him will be payed in the next life. One reviewer says this show isn't worth watching for "The Serious fan of The Crow" because of the differences from the movie, but evidently this person isn't one of them. In the original storyline in the 1st comic and book Draven and his girlfriend are murdered by a pack of Satanic bikers along side a desolate country road after they break down and are in turn stranded. The new installment of The Crow movies is based on this story from what I have read about it and hopefully won't be as disappointing as the 2nd movie and well as far as the 3rd goes it's not even worth mentioning!! If your a true fan of The Crow this series is well worth watching. Not every episode was great but plenty were and all were at the least good. Plenty of guest stars and some really great bands are in the show and soundtrack. Just forgive Mark Dacascos' scenes when he is on stage playing and singing. They wanted to stay true to the character so it was worked into the show but it was obvious to myself, a musician and anyone really, he was given a crash course in guitar and even less in singing. The show aired at around midnight or so, I don't specifically remember and was canceled all too abruptly. I know Dacascos wasn't real big on doing a TV series and would bet he was the main reason it was canceled. When he asked to close the series with a made for TV movie he was refused and we were left hanging. Way to go you Hollywood jerkoffs! The money's more important than the art! Anyway, it's definitely worth watching if you have the opportunity. Worth adding to the movie collection for that matter.

  • I haven't seen the film with Brandon Lee, but I caught this show while surfing Friday night primetime in Canada. This is about a man named Eric Draven who is killed with his girlfriend, but mysteriously resurrected to "set things right." The episodes aren't as moody as the movie, and take quite a different turn. The events, as to be expected, are continuing adventures, in which Eric tries to find out how he can go back to the afterlife. Mark Dacascos is great in the role of Eric Draven. He has that devil-may-care look that is perfect for The Crow, and the martial arts choreography looks fantastic (without considering that this is a television budget). The stories are always action packed with a touch of mystery in the supernatural. This is a great show with a very cool concept, and I hope it keeps going.
  • Askani24 February 1999
I have noticed that Brandon Lee's Eric Draven seemed to be very distant, very ghost like. He would talk in riddles and just had a supernatural demeanor or presence about him. You would get a cold shiver down your back just by looking at him and talking with him, even without him using his abilities. Mark Dacascos' Eric Draven seems much more human. He seems like a human being who has been given supernatural powers and is trying to figure them out. Brandon Lee knew what he had to do, while Mark Dacscos has to discover it on his journey. I like this series and the new direction that it has taken. People see one episode and then they judge it. They then miss out on the new mythology that is created i.e. The Crows & The Snakes constant struggle. I reserved judgement until I had seen a number of episodes and I think it is well written with great new ideas and new conflicts i.e. Eric Draven being arrested for Shelly Webster's murder. It's a great show that I will watch every week!
  • Tired of actors who look off-balance and rigid while doing elementary fight scenes? Mark Dacascos brings a fluidity and balance to both the fight scenes and his normal motions that lend his character credence. I find it hilarious watching TV or movies where the lack of natural balance of the actor makes it difficult to suspend disbelief when he engages in activities that require controlled body motion. When the stunt double is obvious, not through build, or looks, but rather because he or she demonstrates a gracefulness that the actor doesn't possess. The show itself is fine, not something I religiously tune in to, but entertaining enough. What makes it most enjoyable is the fact that Mark Dacascos sells being The Crow through his body language and attitude.
  • No, this show is certainly not the movie, and its biggest mistake was trying to remake the film for the pilot episode. But this show does have some excellent points. The martial arts are well choreographed because Mark Dacascos is one of the greatest martial artists in the world; the music is excellent and well used to underscore certain scenes; and the flashbacks add to the dark mood the show is trying to achieve. If you don't watch it looking for a take-off on the movie, but as something totally distinctive of the film, then you might find it as cool and unusual as I do. Check it out!
  • I didn't see the Brandon Lee version but I swear nobody could have done this role any better than Mark Dacascos... he is superb in this role. The twists and turns in this story make for never a dull moment. And the eerie twists make it a spell binding mystery.
  • The show takes the storyline of the first movie but has Eric remain "alive" in the interests of putting other wrongs right and helping those who cannot help themselves. Cheesy at times but Mark Dacascos' superior physical ability and charisma save the show. I suspect it would have been easy to have focused a great deal on the action part of Eric's character but Dacascos does a great job of giving Eric Draven emotional depth. The three regulars (Gomes, Stuart and Dacascos) have good chemistry and play well off each other. Eric's brief scenes with Shelley stay true to the idea of theirs being a great love, giving the show a good balance of action and romance. It's unfortunate that the show was ended so abruptly; a made-for-tv movie or straight to video release that resolved the issues brought up in the cliffhanger finale to the first season would be appreciated by many fans of the shortlived series.
  • I have seen every single one of the 18 episodes released so far and I absolutely love this series! It was seeing the series that inspired me to rent and then buy the original movie, so to me The Crow is not Brandon Lee or Mark Dacascos, it is Eric Draven. What people have to realize is that the movie and the series are two separate things... you can not possible compare them. They are both excellent in their own way. I can't wait for the next episode! Mark Dacascos is a great martial artist and actor, you should see his movies!Bravo to The Crow STH!
  • While NOTHING can replace James O'Barr's comic book/graphic novel The Crow, I did find the movies and television series very entertaining. At first, I didn't think I'd like The Crow: Stairway To Heaven, but I enjoyed all 22 episodes immensely. People have said it rips off the first movie. I disagree. With TV guidelines being different, the writers have added some new twists to The Crow mythos more interesting. I particularly liked how the television series focused on how Eric Draven does or does not do everyday things like eat, sleep, and pay rent. THAT is something that was NEVER done in the movies.
  • I haven't seen a show this great in such a long time. The Crow, the movie is totally different and separate from Stairway to Heaven, but I love them both, because they are different. Stairway to Heaven is written so beautifully, it is so creative. It appeals to many different people on many different levels, it is such an intelligent show. Mark Dacascos is an excellent actor. He adds a very unique, but necessary character to the show. Everyone involved in this show does an outstanding job.
