The first underground line of the subway opened on October 27, 1904. However, the event in this movie took place between "An American Tail" (1885) and "Fievel Goes West" (1891), as the underground line wasn't even invented before then. The Mousekewitz children and Tony would have all been grown up if it took place in 1904.
The VHS version of this film slightly differs from the DVD version. The title at the beginning of the movie on the VHS is An American Tail III: The Treasure of Manhattan Island, where on the DVD, the title at the beginning is simply An American Tail: The Treasure of Manhattan Island.
