Gandalf and Aragorn lead the World of Men against Sauron's army to draw his gaze from Frodo and Sam as they approach Mount Doom with the One Ring.
The way Mûmakil falls when Legolas pierces its skull with arrows and kills it, is reference to how AT-AT walkers fall in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) after Rebellion pilots attacked them with harpoons and tow cables.

In Minas Tirith, when Gandalf swings Pippin up behind him on Shadowfax and they ride up to try to save Faramir, Gandalf has his staff in his right hand. When they arrive at the Tomb of the Stewards, the staff is gone and Gandalf has take a spear from one of the soldiers at the door to use as a weapon in attacking Denethor.
In the theatrical version Sean Bean receives a major on- screen credit at the end of the film, even though he only appears on screen momentarily in a flashback from the first film.
