The people of a small village in Victorian India stake their future on a game of cricket against their ruthless British rulers.
No matter what the outside temperature, the cast had to don bandis (jackets), dhotis, corsets or gowns if the shot so required. They also had to shed their urban sensibilities. When Shelley went into a tantrum because she did not have a pin for her hat, she was firmly told that she could get one only the following day, when it arrived from Mumbai.
You think I don't see which way the Ganges is flowing?
Bhuvan: Oh, pity me, I feel the pain of the scorpion's sting. You're jealous!
Gauri: Why should I be jealous? Jealousy is beneath me.
Bhuvan: You're jealous, and I know who you're jealous of.
Gauri: I never want to see you ...
SPOILER. Every time British soldiers go past on horseback, the Union flag carried by one of them is always upside down. As an internationally recognized distress signal, it's an unconscious revealing of the result of the cricket match.
