  • I just found out about this series this morning. Saw one episode and was hooked right away! The new Addams family is a remake of an older series titles the Addams family. I am usually skeptical with remakes, i haven't seen much remakes that can be better or even as good as the original, but i can safely say The new Addams family has done the original justice. It's a remake with its own original twist and more up to date jokes. The new Addams family is a fun comedy to watch, either alone or with your family, day or night. The characters are truly funny, the plots are unpredictable and hilarious, the acting is great, the directing is great, the setting is creative, everything about this movie is the right amount of funny. The new Addams's family never fail to surprise me. I give it a 7/10
  • I grew up watching the original series and just found tis old reboot online. I had actually never heard of the reboot before. I have to say that I had high hopes. But, sadly, they were soon dashed. It's like every scene is overly done for laughs when the original was just about some odd folks living their odd life. Yes, the original series was funny. But the actors were so good that you always felt like the humor was unintentional. Don't get me wrong. It's an average/decent show to watch. That's why I'm giving it a midrange 5-star. But, it's nothing like the original series.

Actually, I sorta enjoyed this show, especially the actor who played Gomez. You could tell he'd spent hours watching John Astin in the original and was doing a more than passing fair homage to him. He was pretty good, all told. I don't remember much about the rest of the cast, I guess I was too busy laughing myself sick over Gomez.

Still and all, the original is the best. I saw an interview with the four remaining actors the other day on accounta the series was just released on DVD. They were John Astin, the two kids and - believe it or not - the little person who played Cousin It. Felix (I didn't get his last name) was supposed to be the better Cousin It. Apparently, you can tell the difference when another actor played him...I sort of remember a more subdued Cousin It, now that I think about it.
  • I remember the original The Addams Family. It came to the air when I was 8. The humor of those shows stands up even today. The New Addams Family makes a great attempt at returning to those "original" values and humor. Certainly it isn't the first movie (but it is sure a heck of a lot better than the 3rd one!!!) which strove to bring a more modern feel to the franchise. But this new incarnation is actually rather clever. Instead of having a bunch of "names" with new faces to associate with the characters, the producers found relative unknowns that have some amazing resemblances (take a look at Michael Roberds as Uncle Fester) and some very similar vocal characteristics. Close you eyes when Gomez and Fester are talking and you can almost hear John Astin and Jackie Coogan. And Ellie Hervie is a great Morticia. I like this series. It is, of course, only in reruns now. Watch a few of them with an open mind. I think you will enjoy them as well.

I am a huge fan of the original series and because of that I am giving a chance to every adaptation of Addams. Movies were OK, although not even close to the original show. Animated series was unwatchable and now there's this. "The New Addams Family" is a color remake of the original series. Although story and humor are quite similar, the new cast is way below the original, both in looks and performances, and overall atmosphere leaves an impression of a parody rather than a remake. I can not say it is especially bad, and if I didn't watch the series from the sixties maybe I would even like this a bit. But I did watch it and I love it very much, so I experienced this as a blasphemy and it was literally painful for me to watch.

  • The Addams Family charisma, was first dreamed up under the pin of Charles Addams and had been a part of American art culture long before the original Addams Family television show was first aired in the 60's. In his cartoons, seen for over 60 years in the "New Yorker" and many other fine magazines, Americans saw a different side of life. His themes showed the unnatural in its natural setting, being taken for granted and in some strange way always making perfect sense.

In September 1964 we gathered around our TV's and watched this weird new show called "the Addams Family". No one thought it would work, how could they take live actors and recreate that special Addams charm? We decided to watch it. Suddenly it turned out to be good, and each show it got better. Age didn't seem to matter everyone in the family loved it. As we watched week after week, we saw the cast expand their characters, gain confedence and present a trully magical show about a loving family....

    Time passed...

It is Oct 1998. The family gathers together again to see this, so called, "New Addams Family" show. As we wait for it to start everybody has an opinion. "Never heard of these actors, why not just bring back some of the movies actors?"...."Why not just create new Addams characters and leave the original names alone"..."there was only one Gomez"...."name the father Repelli, the wife Prunella, the son Pubert, the..."..."can't be done again"..."Mama, are they going to do it like the movies or like the original show?". Most of the people who watched that first show expected to be disappointed. Now 65 shows later, families all over the world still crowd infront of their TV's to watch Gomez, Morticia, Fester, Mama, Wednesday, Pugsley, Lurch, the ever faithful Thing, Cousin Itt, a whole cemetery full of cousins and special guests recreate the wonderful world of Addams for us. Yes, there are weak moments, yes there are strong moments, but when it comes right down to it each one is a pure Addams moment. The cast, crew and writers of the New Addams Family show, have worked hard to bring the Addams Family into the 90's. They accomplished that with out losing the special magic and family love that was a trade mark of the first show. They also managed to do honor to the Addams Family Movies without losing the original show's certian something.

The humor and insight of Charles Addams has been an important part of American culture for over 80 years. The New Addams Family television show has survived it's trial by fire and can take it's place in Addams Family history. Who know 25 years from now we may gather around the WebTV to watch the all new Addams Family of 2025. I bet you it will be a blast too. Especially if Uncle Fester has anything to say about it.

    Happy viewing! :)
  • At first I intensely disliked this series. On re-watch it is not bad as such, and certainly not as bad as I remembered, but I still don't like it very much. And just for the record, this is coming from a fan of the original series and from someone who very much liked the two Raul Julia/Anjelica Huston movies. Addams Family Reunion was however a mess, despite me being a big fan of Tim Curry.

I will get what I liked about The New Addams Family out of the way first. First and foremost, Glenn Taranto as Gomez. He is note perfect in the role and you can tell he was studying the original series as he was preparing for the role. And for fans of the original series, will love the original Gomez John Astin as Grandpa. The costume and set design are far from cheap either, the settings are meticulous with a convincing looking house, the effects are not slapdash(Thing is excellent) and the costumes are more than just fancy dress. The music is still iconic and fitting too.

However, I didn't like how the series presented the Addams Family themselves. Instead of a loving, genuinely caring family, they are more like criminals in this one. I know the Barry Sonnenfeld movies had a somewhat different representation of the family, but how they're presented here and their actions makes the Sonnenfeld movies tame in comparison. The series just wasn't funny here, the writing wasn't surreal or subtle enough, and the slapstick is rather tired and predictable.

The stories were rather uneven for me. There are some decent ones, like the first episode and the one with Fester as Santa at the mall, but others feel as though they're increasingly run out of ideas. The acting apart from Tarranto and Astin didn't impress me, Morticia tries too hard and is too expressive, Michael Roberds overdoes it embarrassingly as Fester and Pugsley is forgettable. Nicole Fugere fares better, she is much more comfortable than she is in Addams Family Reunion and she has some great deadpan delivery, however while it was more the fault of the writers, her Wednesday seemed more a pale imitation of Christina Ricci's.

Overall, I know judging from what I've said I'm going against the tide, but while it is not a complete disgrace I didn't care for it. 4/10 Bethany Cox

    2022?
    Well Well Well!

Who is there after the Netflix Series Wednesday?

I guess this one could have a remake it would be really nice!

I watched it back when I was a kid on T. V, well obviously I never watched a full episode, but it had nice vibes.

Info: The Addams Family is a fictional family created by American cartoonist Charles Addams. They originally appeared in a series of 150 unrelated single-panel cartoons, about half of which were originally published in The New Yorker over a 50-year period from their inception in 1938. They have since been adapted to other media, such as television, film, video games, comic books, a musical, and merchandise.
  • My daughter was watching the New Addams Family one night and I got hooked. I was a big fan of the original series and I think the production company did a great job with this remake. The part I like the most is the similarity (both physically and in portrayal) between the original cast and the current one. I just watched an episode where John Aston (the original Gomez) appeared as Grandpapa Addams. The inside jokes started flying and it was a great laugh. I think this is a definite winner. For anyone on the east coast who get the Fox Family Channel, you can see two episodes a night between 6pm and 7pm EST.
  • This show is a Dark-beautiful show.

I like it because they mix horror, satire, emotions and jokes in it while remaining as a children's show.

Many moms will become cry babies over this show. I grew up as a child watching this show and I didn't want to harm anyone and i didn't get any nightmares.
  • I just started watching this show again on YouTube and i couldn't get enough of it. The actors who played the Addams family are awesome. Especially the girl who plays Wednesday and she plays it well. My personal favorite character was Fester in this show and I was sad to hear he passed Bc him along with the other actors did their roles with so much effort and they look like they had fun in their roles too. I highly recommend this show and I pray we can see this on dvd too. I say either watch it on YouTube or daily motion and you will enjoy it fondly especially the kids.
  • On a whim I decided to watch this since I was a big fan of the original series and I really enjoyed the two movies. I really enjoy this new incarnation. There will never be a better cast than John Astin and the lot but this new crew is wonderful for a TV version. The humor is very similar to the original and of course the nifty sets and special effects are less than the movies provided but the writing, which is fairly witty and sharp, more than makes up for any of this. Compared to the recent overdose of poor remakes (anyone see the Munsters Today?) This program ranks well above the rest.
  • I recall watching only the Halloween episodes as a kid. My parents preferred the original and didn't continue the New Addams Family. As a huge fan of the Addams Family, I watched Wednesday and wanted more. I remembered this then found it on YouTube.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I fell in love with this incarnation. Though they remake several old episodes, it's never exactly the same story. The modern (for its time) setting, use of visual effects, and different character dynamics make for new takes on the old. Where The New Addams Family thrives is in their wholly new episodes, utilizing the family's twisted sensibilities to create entirely fresh stories.

Glenn Taranto and Ellie Harvie have perfect chemistry as Gomez and Morticia. While Glenn's portrayal is reminiscent of John Astin, he also manages to make it his own. Harvie's Morticia is mostly original, her speech patterns and unique beauty setting her apart from other portrayals.

Michael Roberds delivers a solid performance as Fester. While adopting the voice of original Jackie Coogan, this Fester is also Gomez's brother like in the movies. Here, Grandmama Addams, played by Betty Philips, is the mother of Gomez and Fester. This makes The New Addams Family the first time every member is really an Addams. (Fester in the OG was Morticia's uncle. Granny was Morticia's mom in the movies.)

Nicole Fugere made a great Wednesday, adopting the apathetic attitude she's become known for. She can actually be scary. Unfortunately, a weak point in the series is Pugsley, whose child actor was entirely unconvincing. Another strong point, Lurch feels a lot more like part of the family here, charmingly played by John DeSantis.

The New Addams Family is somewhat formulaic, but it was a 90's sitcom. One bright point for me was the lack of a laugh track, something that takes me out of the original. Most of the humor is actually very funny, and they sprinkle in a lot of jokes only parents would get. Fourth wall breaks are also common, but it works for the humor and tone.

I'm genuinely sad this series has been so forgotten. People saw either the movie version or the original show as the definitive Addams Family back then. This series was preemptively ruined by the disastrous direct-to-TV dud Addams Family Reunion. Though Reunion and New Addams Family are not in the same universe, one could see the confusion in the public. In 1998, it wasn't common for multiple versions of one IP to exist concurrently.

I can only hope more people will discover the wonder of this series.
  • This show is a Very Fun Comedy, I tell ya, This is as funny as the old addams family. It still had Good Clever Jokes and They also add a little character development. I would highly recommend this show.
  • How could you ever hope to re-make this classic TV masterpiece? And do it well??? Just look at the dismal failures trying to re-create "the Munsters", or the "cheesy" reunions of the Addams Family. Yecchh!!! This project seemed doomed to failure too. Somehow, it's been updated and updated well. It's not really true to the Charles Addam's original, but is more true to the old TV series. Same stories, but in color, with added touches, like, a Judge Judy character, the internet, swing music, guest stars of note, and the occasional appearance of John Astin as grandpapa. The stories seem fresh.

Of course, the ingredient that keeps it all together is the fine characterization of Morticia by Canadian actress/comedienne, ELLIE HARVIE. She does this with a great look, great intonation, and wonderful facial gestures. The expressiveness may be a bit overdone at times, but c'est la vie (oooooh, that's French!!!), I find myself waiting for her "Jack Benny-esque" contributions.

During the original run of the show, I wasn't yet a teen, but I was totally in love/lust for the sexy Carolyn Jones (Morticia). Does it show? But now, ELLIE HARVIE is the ultimate Morticia and has replaced Ms. Jones in my heart. BRAVO MS. HARVIE !!!

PS... the guestbook isn't working, so it's okay if you email me, ELLIE...LOL
  • This show has gotten a bad rap...even though it is a remake and does steal a lot of plot from the original, the acting is incredible and the show's fresh enough to be a lot of fun. I'd say it's better than a lot of the new shows that are coming out these days...once you get used to the new actors, you might learn to love it!
  • The New Addams Family provides a refreshing look at our old friends Gomez, Morticia, Fester, Wednesday, Pugsley, Lurch, Grandmama, and of course, Thing. This new series is quite recognizable to veteran Addams fans as a continuation of the amazingly popular 60's show, but with more of the feel of the Addams movies. The writers do, on occasion, show a lack of originality in the plot-lines, which are, four-out-of-five, re-wordings of the original episodes, but the feeling is preserved, and the plots and character development thus far have shown that the developers are resisting the temptation to bring the family all the way into the 90's. The family has a wonderful old-fashioned naivete about them, which has always been one of the main elements of the Addams Family. The original plotlines remain the best, and most interesting. If the script-writers use enough original material and avoid the cartoon-ish humor of Addams Family Reunion and the Munsters, the show may prove a success. The players all fill their roles quite well, living up to the expectations set by their predecessors. Taranto is amazingly reminiscent of John Astin, who he obviously studied in great detail, so as to recreate the work of the master. The other characters are likewise well studied and well executed. Overall, the show lacks originality, but is a good, logical step in the evolution of The Addams Family.
  • Creed-224 November 1998
The new show is as good as if not better than the original! The cast fit their parts perfectly. This is one of the best new shows to come out in a long time!
  • Having watched "The Addams Family" when it originally ran and having seen the Addams Family movies, I'd have to say the New Addams Family series on FoxFamily is incredibly more pleasing and entertaining to me than I found the movies to be. I felt the casting of the original movie ruined its playfulness and really didn't have the same flavor as the 60's series. Glenn Taranto is eerily much more reminiscent of John Ashton and seems much happier and outgoing than Raul Julio was. He and Ellie Harvie portray the Addam's passions more frequently, but in such a carefree way it makes physical touch seem like a normal happy occurrence of two people in love instead of a segway to adult entertainment. Nicole Fugere is an excellent Wednesday and steals the show. Both she and Brody Smith as Pugsly really bring out the children's parts (it is on a children's network) as two average children with just some seriously odd family values. The show is incredibly cast, better written than the movies I saw, and very entertaining; both my son and I love to watch it! It's one of the few 60's revivals that is actually a treat to watch. I just wish the production company would put up a web site for the show as the FoxFamily site is very limited.
  • Basically, this show is a remake of the original series, with very little of the "updating" that occurred for the two theatrical movies starring Julia, Huston, et al. The humor is very 60's, with only the Wednesday character being written with some of the more "90's" black humor of the movies. There's also a bit more sex, but not much. Generally an effort to cash in on the popularity of the movies, and this cast of no-names gives it its best. You'd probably be better off watching the original series on Nickelodeon, though.
  • Just an awful series, and a slap in the face to the intellectual property.

Some context. If you were a kid in the 1990s it was pretty hard to avoid the Saban Entertainment logo, especially if you watched a lot of Fox Kids programming. Thanks to Power Rangers and other productions(A lot of which were imports of foreign programming) they were unstoppable, and because of their success they were able to purchase the television rights for other intellectual property from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and...The Addams Family. As Saban is not too well known for high production values or the most sophisticated of story writing this rendition of The Addams Family suffered by not a little. Almost all of it feels and even looks like a local theatre production, from the cast and the set design, the writing is just terrible, and it tries hard to blend both the original series and the feature films of the early 90s starring Raul Julia, Anjelica Huston, Christopher Lloyd, and Christina Ricci but fails miserably at capturing the same charm or wit.

BEWARE. See at your own risk.
