Five tigers were brought in for the scene in the arena where Maximus fights Tigris the Gaul. A veterinarian armed with tranquilizer darts was present the entire time. For safety's sake, Russell Crowe was kept at least fifteen feet away from the tigers.

Traditional Roman combat strategy of the era taught soldiers to lunge with their swords while under cover of their shields, instead of the hacking seen in the movie.
Both the Dreamworks & Universal logos are altered to appear gold in color so they match the opening theme of Maximus walking through a wheatfield.
The ABC version of "Gladiator" (aired in 2002) was made into a two-part movie including scenes that were deleted in the theatrical version, but found in the DVD version. It had been heavily edited for violence.
