The Sippy's wanted Vivek Vaswani to start Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman but Vivek insisted on Shahrukh being in the film. They did not take him seriously. Shah Rukh would first sign Dil Aashna Hain, then King Uncle ( after he met Rakesh at a party). The Sippys were still deciding who to sign for the lead role. One of the people from Sippys production house suggested to Vaswani he check out Vivek Mushran. Vivek heard the film and liked it, but was advised by Subhash Ghai to charge a large sum. So Vivek Muhsran lost the film. Next Vaswani went to Aamir Khan with the film. He loved the film but had no dates. Shah Rukh would go on to sign Deewana and Chamatkaar in the mean time. It was only when the Sippys saw everyone signing Shah Rukh Khan that they finally agreed to have him in the film. The shooting started September of 1991.
