Anything can happen on live TV, and some of the most memorable, “What the hell?” moments in “Saturday Night Live”s 50-year history including a lip-sync screwup, political statements and even a host doing bizarre dancehall reggae cosplay.
Here’s some of the most talked-about performances that did not go on as planned:

The Irish singer was booed — and subsequently banned — after tearing up a picture of the then pontiff, Pope John Paul II, and saying, “Fight the real enemy.” Audiences might not have realized exactly what she was protesting, but she was calling out the entire Catholic Church for its long, shameful history of covering up sexual abuse by priests. She was of course vindicated, repeatedly, in the years that followed.

After spending three weeks at No. 1 on Nielsen’s overall streaming viewership chart, Netflix’s Squid Game has relinquished its crown.
Netflix’s Jamie Foxx-Cameron Diaz thriller Back In Action landed the top spot this week with 1.5 billion minutes viewed, Nielsen said in its weekly update on Thursday. Squid Game fell to No. 4 on the overall streaming chart with 1.25 billion minutes viewed during the Jan. 13-Jan. 19 frame, the most recent week in the data firm’s tally.
Meanwhile, Billy Bob Thornton-starrer Landman kept up its run with 1.05 billion minutes of viewing and represents the only Paramount+ show outside of library title Dexter to chart in the top 5 for this week on either the TV or movies charts.
Speaking of Western-influenced shows, Peter Berg’s American Primeval, which was the top premiere on the streaming chart last week, rose to No. 2 on the overall chart with 1.41 billion minutes viewed.

It's been a long wait fellow Big Mouth fans, but we finally have a great update about Big Mouth season 8. And that's when we can expect the final season! It's bittersweet that this is the last one, though we are glad to finally get more episodes. So when can we expect to see the next installment of the adult animated comedy?
Big Mouth season 8 premieres sometime in spring/summer 2025 on Netflix. The streaming service announced this update at the end of January when it also dropped a bunch of other news about its upcoming content for the year. I'm so glad Big Mouth was one of them because season 7 premiered all the way back in October 2023.
It's true there's no exact release date yet, but at least we have a release window to go off of. It's also a bit surprising that the release window is spring or summer since...

Still going strong after 26 years, "Family Guy" has rightfully earned its place in primetime animated comedy, just like those folks from Springfield and the profane kids from "South Park." With such a lengthy time on air, though, the show has adapted to the times with its subject matter, includng the voice cast that helped bring its most loved and controversial characters to life. For example, in the case of Quahog's mayor, the grumbling, iconically mustached actor Sam Elliott took to office voicing Mayor Wild West. While it's undoubtedly on brand for "Family Guy" to get a beloved hero like Elliott on board, the casting came after the passing of Quahog's previous fictional mayor, Adam West.
The one-of-a-kind actor and brilliant Batman played himself on the show since he debuted in season 2 in 2000. Reaching impressive levels of kookiness, Mayor West was often better than a throwaway gag, frequently popping in with...

Four seasons after "Family Guy" started, Seth MacFarlane and the rest of the creative team behind the Griffins' hilarious world decided to launch another series with "American Dad." The show features a slightly more intelligent father figure, Stan Smith (but just barely), who, like "Family Guy" patriarch Peter Griffin, is voiced by MacFarlane himself. With so many overlapping creative aspects, such as the voice actors, edgy comedy, and distinctive animation style, it's understandable if you've ever wondered whether "American Dad" and "Family Guy" exist within the same universe. Well, it turns out they do a little.
Debuting in 2005, "American Dad" occasionally winked at the audience, making fragile connections to MacFarlane's other beloved animated series early on. Characters from "Family Guy" and "American Dad" would also cross over into one another's series via cameos, most notably in the "Family Guy" parodies of "Star Wars" and one of the show's best episodes,...

At this point, it's painfully obvious that Bluey has quickly become one of the most iconic TV characters in modern media. From cartoons to a full-length Disney movie in the works, fans have gone bonkers for the blue dog from Brisbane.
As popular as the show is, it's also outright bizarre just how much a children's show has affected not just its intended young audience but the adults as well. This strange phenomenon might explain why Bluey is one of the most beloved television shows, and the Nielsen ratings prove it.
Bluey soars to the top (again!)
A recent report from What's On Disney Plus shared that Bluey once again climbed to the top of the Nielsen charts, leaving shows like Grey's Anatomy and Dexter with their tails between their proverbial legs. The report shares the following statement,

Hank Azaria expressed fear to The New York Times that artificial intelligence could soon replace him as the voice of several characters on “The Simpsons,” on which he’s been a voice actor since 1989. The comedian is the voice behind dozens of characters on the long-running Fox animated series, including bartender Moe and Chief Wiggum. With 36 years of “Simpsons” voice acting behind him, Azaria is well aware AI has a lot of material to pull from.
“I imagine that soon enough, artificial intelligence will be able to recreate the sounds of the more than 100 voices I created for characters on ‘The Simpsons’ over almost four decades,” Azaria wrote in The Times. “It makes me sad to think about it. Not to mention, it seems just plain wrong to steal my likeness or sound — or anyone else’s.”

Squid Game dominated the streaming charts, though it cooled off a good amount in its third week at No. 1. Landman also peaked following its season finale, and American Primeval had a strong debut.
For the week of Jan. 6-12, Squid Game racked up 2.37 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. That’s down by about 48 percent from the previous week — but still almost a billion minutes clear of Landman in second place. Since the Dec. 26 premiere of season two, Squid Game has totaled 11.88 billion minutes of watch time in the United States.
As for Landman, its 1.38 billion minutes for the week leading into its Jan. 12 season finale continued the Paramount+ drama’s streak of improving every week it’s been on. It grew from 1.3 billion minutes a week earlier.
American Primeval, a western from Peter Berg, was the top premiere of the week with 1.25 billion viewing minutes on Netflix.

For all the carnage, crassness and family-unfriendly humor in Family Guy, the most messed-up part of the show continues to be the fact that so many mostly normal human women keep screwing the pooch.
As Family Guy fanatics know well, Brian Griffin is one of the two original characters whom creator Seth MacFarlane conceived for a prototypical project, the mid-1990s cartoon shorts called Life of Larry. In the predecessor cartoon, Brian was named Steve, but he was still a two-legs-walking, smart-talking pet who acted more like a best bro than man’s best friend to Larry, the shorter, more nebbish-y animated patriarch who preceded Peter Griffin. When Life of Larry caught the eye of some Fox executives, they gave MacFarlane $50,000 to expand Larry and Steve into a full TV family – thus, Family Guy began.
But for as long as Brian/Steve Griffin has been a central figure in MacFarlane’s animated universe,...

A recent string of aviation accidents has forced Adult Swim to do the unthinkable: They’re censoring Eric André.
The last week of air travel in America was so disastrous that even adult animation felt the aftershocks. Following deadly crashes in Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, Cartoon Network and Adult Swim are scrambling to ensure that their entertainment options aren’t of the “unintentionally macabre” variety as the country searches for answers. But while the White House wages a war on the Faa and all other federal agencies, the most popular programming block for teen-and-adult-focused comedy shows is more worried about the FCC as they scrub certain episodes of hit shows from their upcoming schedule.
As it turns out, a surprisingly high number of upcoming airings on Adult Swim would have featured plane crashes and problematic imagery during this difficult time in aviation. Here is each episode that Adult Swim...

There is some disappointing news for Bob’s Burgers fans. The winter break is going to be much longer than we’d like.
Bob’s Burgers isn’t back in February 2025. Nor will it return in March or even April 2025. Fox is putting the series on a break, as there are just too many animated comedies now to fit into one night of programming.
This isn’t bad for Bob’s Burgers. It doesn’t mean the series will be canceled or is performing badly. It’s just that there isn’t enough space. The show isn’t the only one taking a break.

Bob’s Burgers and The Simpsons will continue to take some time off after the Super Bowl, according to TVLine. Family Guy season 23 will premiere on Sundays and kick off the night, and that will be followed by Grimsburg season 2. Then in the 9 p.

In a January 29 episode of Stephen King-themed podcast "The Kingcast," the horror author joined hosts Eric Vespe and Scott Wampler to discuss the latest King movie adaptation -- "Longlegs" director Osgood Perkins' "The Monkey" -- among many other things. Since King has written so many books that his work spans several decades, his fellow creators and other notable people occasionally drop fun little homages to his work. When King was asked to name the most surprising Stephen King Easter egg that he's ever encountered in the wild, the writer was able to recall one that truly managed to catch him unawares.
"I found out that there was a pro hockey goalie named Curtis Joseph, who called himself 'Cujo'. And he wore a mask that had a dog face on it. That's really resonant."

Long before the Roys of New York or the Sopranos of New Jersey, one family dominated television: the Ewings of "Dallas." The genre-shaking soap opera aired for 14 seasons from 1978 to 1991, chronicling the dramatic, twist-filled epic saga of the Ewing Oil dynasty.
On a picturesque ranch in Dallas, Texas, the family used their money, connections, and cunning to bat away threats from outside and within. Whatever threats that rival oilman, spurned lovers, or wannabe politicians think they can pose, "Dallas" always reminds us that there's nothing stronger -- or more dangerous -- than family.
Over 30 years have passed since the final episode of the original series, and there's been well over 10 years of silence from this world following a brief revival on TNT. As such, many are curious about what happened to the cast of "Dallas," so we tracked down as much information about its massive ensemble cast as we could.

These days, many a beloved network series is being given the streaming age reboot treatment. Kelsey Grammer pulled off a full "Frasier" revival series which was, lamentably, neither disappointing nor remarkable. Meanwhile, NBC ordered a "Suits" spin-off, "Suits: LA" which will see the show that experienced a remarkable Netflix renaissance in recent years revitalized for a new generation. All of which has only heightened anticipation for a "Bones" reboot.
The Fox procedural, led by Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz, ran for 12 seasons from 2005 to 2017, and maintained a devoted following throughout. With renewed interest in resurrecting series just like this, talk of a "Bones" reboot has increased, though such a thing would be complicated given Disney's 2019 acquisition of Fox. If a "Bones" revival does come to pass, however, it would at least give series creator Hart Hanson a chance to address one of the most frustratingly nonsensical aspects of the original series.

John Erwin, the reclusive actor who provided the voices for the heroic title character in He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and the vain frenemy Reggie Mantle in a series of Archie cartoons, has died. He was 88.
Erwin died of natural causes “around Dec. 20” in his home in Camarillo, California, his reps at the PR firm Celebworx announced.
For nearly a decade starting in 1969, Erwin was heard in dozens of TV commercials as the snarky Morris the Cat, the finicky orange tabby who would eat nothing but the 9Lives brand of cat food. The hugely successful campaign was created by the Leo Burnett advertising firm.
Earlier, Erwin was seen on camera when he recurred as the cattle driver Teddy on CBS’ Rawhide, starring Clint Eastwood.

Paramount+’s Landman continued its upward trajectory in the first few days of 2025, hitting its best viewing-time mark so far in Nielsen’s streaming rankings. Squid Game had a second straight huge week for Netflix as well.
The Korean hit drew just under 4.6 billion minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Dec. 30-Jan. 5, topping the 4 billion mark again a week after its season two premiere. The series fell by less than 7 percent week-to-week from the 4.92 billion minutes it had for its long-awaited return.
Landman snagged 1.3 billion minutes of watch time in the week leading up to its ninth episode. The Taylor Sheridan series, starring Billy Bob Thornton, has improved its totals in every week since it first hit the rankings in late November.
Two other shows also reached a billion minutes to open the year: Virgin River came in at 1.39 billion for Netflix, and Missing You...

Mark Harmon played the supervising special agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the procedural show NCIS. As the third longest-running script TV show, NCIS is currently on its twenty-second. Harmon left the show after season 18, with his character given a suspension. He also reprised his role in the spinoff shows.
While Harmon was not too similar to the ever-disciplined and stoic Gibbs, several of the character’s traits and details reportedly came from the actor himself. Stuff like his mannerisms and particular details that were shown throughout the series seemed to be inspired by Harmon’s own traits and hobbies.

Over the years, "Family Guy" has made jokes at the expense of some revered names in popular culture. George Lucas, Quentin Tarantino, and Agatha Christie have all been put under the knife and cut into comedic pieces. One big name that Seth MacFarlane's show went after was Stephen King, who, in the 15th episode of season 7 (one of the best seasons of the series), paid homage to the author with a brief anthology in "Three Kings."
The episode saw Peter Griffin (Seth MacFarlane) sitting by the fire going through three of Stephen King's beloved stories as they each get the "Family Guy" treatment: "Stand By Me," "Misery," and "The Shawshank Redemption." The problem is that each segment starring some of Quahog's finest is taken from the films based on the books and not the books themselves. Peter might say he's made a trip to the library, but it seems...

The end is in sight for The Conners.
ABC has set a March 26 premiere date for the comedy’s seventh and final season. The Conners is ending with an abbreviated, six-episode run; ABC announced the final season in May 2024.
The show will take up its usual 8 p.m. Wednesday time period for the final episodes. That spot’s current occupant, Shifting Gears, is scheduled to conclude its first season on March 19.
Season seven will bring the series to a total of 112 episodes, an increasingly rare accomplishment for a network comedy series. Only one other current live-action broadcast comedy — CBS’ The Neighborhood — has more than 100 episodes to its name. (Fox’s animated stalwarts The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers are also long past that mark.)
The Conners — a spinoff of ABC’s 2018 Roseanne revival that was canceled after one season following racist remarks by star Roseanne Barr — has been a solid performer throughout its run.

As last year wound down, the Disney TV empire — counting broadcasters like ABC, streaming platforms Disney+ and Hulu along with cable channels like FX — managed to stave off YouTube in the race for viewing marketshare in the attention economy.
Disney’s brands saw about 11.2 percent of overall TV viewing in the United States, just ahead of YouTube’s 11.1 percent share, per Nielsen’s Media Distributor Gauge for December. Having the most-viewed TV series of 2024, Bluey, which tallied 55.62 billion minutes watched last year, certainly helped. And, in fact, all five of the top five most-viewed series of 2024 — Grey’s Anatomy, Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers and NCIS among them — were all available to watch on a Disney platform.
YouTube, meanwhile, appears to be reaping the benefits by orienting its app as a viewing destination on TV sets instead of just as a second screen for videos. The Google-owned platform claimed...

Everyone remembers when they learned that Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker's father. Some folks were fortunate enough to catch it in the theater back in 1980 or shortly after when "The Empire Strikes Back" made its way to home video. As a 1990s kid, I saw it sometime around 1999 when I watched the original trilogy for the first time in the lead-up to the release of "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace." The reveal blew my tiny little mind, and there's a reason it's not just one of the greatest moments in the entire "Star Wars" franchise, but also one of the greatest movie moments ever. Unfortunately, it's a reveal that has become such an unignorable part of America's pop culture fabric, there are also an immeasurable number of people who likely learned about Luke Skywalker's paternity discovery from a bit in "Tommy Boy," a joke on "Family Guy,...

In the wake of the recent passing of beloved director/part-time weatherman David Lynch, it's worth remembering that one of his best talents was his acting. He always nailed it in his live-action performances, be it as Gordon Cole in "Twin Peaks" or as John Ford in "The Fabelmans," but he brought his A-game to voice acting, too. Case in point: The 2016, season 15 episode of "Family Guy," "How the Griffins Stole Christmas." Lynch doesn't play a major role, but he does pop up in a cutaway that asks the question, "What if instead of Santa Clause coming down the chimney, it was David Lynch? The result is something that any "Twin Peaks" fan can surely appreciate:
What's nice about this cutaway is that the writers of it clearly seem to have actually watched Lynch's work and can make specific jokes about it. On social media, you'll often see people attempt...

Animated series on Hulu took the next two spots — “Family Guy” with 42.44 billion minutes viewed and “Bob’s Burgers” with 36.80 billion — followed by “NCIS” with 35.91 billion across Netflix, Hulu and Paramount+. “Young Sheldon” and “The Big Bang Theory” ranked at No. 6 and No. 7, followed by “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Criminal Minds” and “SpongeBob SquarePants.”

The Big Bang Theory finished 2024 as the year’s “most-binged title” in streaming, according to a new report from Nielsen.
The sitcom averaged 265.5 episodes per viewer on Max, the measurement firm said, or 29.1 billion minutes of total viewing. The long-running former CBS series has 281 total episodes available for streaming.
Coming in at No. 7 overall among this year’s top streaming titles, Big Bang saw 58% of its watch time accounted for by adults 18 to 49.
The “average episodes per viewer” stat refers to the amount of time (with episodes lasting at least 20 minutes each) spent viewing the show. It does not indicate the number of unique episodes seen by each viewer.
Nielsen said it compiled the “most-binged” ranking by evaluating streaming titles with libraries of at least 50 episodes. It counted only the series whose viewers had spent at least one episode’s worth of time (20 minutes) with the show.
“While half-hour programs tend to be more binge-able,...

As Black Ops 6 players demand that Treyarch adopt a more realistic design approach with new skins, Call of Duty‘s controversial operators are once again at the center of controversy. While Black Ops 6 players were hoping that 2025 would see the return of more grounded designs, recent additions to the in-game store have disappointed fans. Realism in Call of Duty has been a hot topic for many years.

Although they weren’t the first, games like Modern Warfare 3 in 2023 and Black Ops Cold War in 2020 are among the most recent to feature bizarre operator skins.
However, unrealistic skins in Call of Duty have existed since Advanced Warfare in 2014 when players could take on the role of a gingerbread man. Players appear to have had enough of Call of Duty’s increasingly strange operator skins over the last four or five years.

Seth MacFarlane is undeniably a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood, particularly in the TV space. As the creator of long-running shows such as "Family Guy" and "American Dad," his creations are now fixtures of the pop culture landscape. But even heavy-hitters miss every once in a while. For MacFarlane, his biggest miss to date came in 2013 when Fox picked up his live-action multi-camera sitcom "Dads" to air. Riding high at arguably the biggest moment in his career, the network seemed to think it couldn't lose. What it wound up with was an unrivaled critical misfire.
How bad was the response to "Dads," exactly? Amazingly enough, it ranks as the worst-reviewed sitcom on Metacritic with a dreadful 15 "Metascore." It should be noted that the site only counts titles with seven or more reviews. Setting aside any technicalities, "Dads" is...

Jennifer Tilly, like many professionals, began acting in high school, having been bitten by the theater bug as a teen. Her mother, a former stage actress herself, helped Jennifer (as well as her younger sister Meg) pursue walk-on roles and supporting parts in various Hollywood TV shows, and Tilly made her TV debut on an episode of the sitcom "Oh Madeline" in 1983. In 1984, she secured a regular role on the obscure comedy series "Shaping Up," which starred Leslie Nielsen as a grumpy health club owner. Tilly appeared in all five episodes. Her real big break came that same year, as she secured a recurring role on the hit cop show "Hill Street Blues," appearing in six episodes.
Tilly would spend the next few years acting in guest spots on hit shows like "Moonlighting," "Cheers," and "Remington Steel." She would also make a move into cinemas, appearing in multiple studio comedies and thrillers.

No two procedurals are created equal, but the beloved Fox series "Bones" is especially unique, focusing on just one specialty within forensic science. Unlike Dexter Morgan's blood-splatter analysis on "Dexter" or the more traditional forensic pathology of shows like "CSI," Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and her team deal almost exclusively with, well, bones! Dr. Brennan is a forensic anthropologist at the fictional Jeffersonian Institute, based on the real-life Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., and she uses her skills at identifying information about bodies through their bones to help the FBI solve crimes. "Bones" is based on the Temperance Booth books by former real-life forensic pathologist Kathy Reichs, who infused her own personal knowledge into the books and therefore the series — but how accurate is the science, really?
