Wendt died peacefully in his sleep at home, his family confirmed Tuesday morning. He was 76.

“George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him,” a rep for Wendt said in a statement. “He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time.”

Wendt had an incredible career as an actor, beloved for his starring role as Norm Peterson in all 11 seasons of the NBC sitcom Cheers. During his time playing Norm, he earned Emmy nominations for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series for six consecutive years, with the character notably also making cameos on St. Elsewhere, Wings, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Frasier and The Tortellis.

George Wendt, best known for playing the beer-swilling Norm on Cheers, died peacefully in his sleep while at home early Tuesday morning, according to a family representative. He was 76.

Wendt was on Cheers for the entirety of the show’s epic run from 1982–1993. On a series full of beloved characters, his Norm Peterson was arguably the most beloved, with his entry into a scene announced each time as all the bar’s patrons exclaimed, “Norm!” What followed was usually a setup from one of his co-stars followed by a snappy one-liner from Norm.

As a result of that performance, Wendt earned six consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, but never won.

“I have a hard time talking about Norm. It’s like he’s too close to me,” Wendt once said of the character. “I think he’s the toughest to write for because he’s not really anything.

Per Deadline, the returning Everybody Hates Chris star said of the animated revival series, "To do it again animated, we can go forever. That's the plan." Crews added, "Let’s get some of that Family Guy, Simpsons kinda stuff. I want that 20-year longevity on that show."

Crews originally portrayed the Rock family patriarch Julius on Everybody Hates Chris, a live-action, semi-autobiographical sitcom created by comedy legend Chris Rock and loosely based on his own childhood experiences. Everybody Hates Chris also starred Tichina Arnold as Rochelle Rock, Chris' mother, Tequan Richmond as Chris' younger brother, Imani Hakim as Chris' spoiled younger sister Tonya, and Tyler James Williams as a young Chris Rock, while Rock himself provided voice-over narration for the series. In 2009, Everybody Hates Chris came to a close after 88 episodes across 4 seasons.

Seth MacFarlane and Peacock appear to have a strong creative partnership, with the streaming platform teaming up once again with the Family Guy creator for a brand-new animated comedy. While MacFarlane already has his Ted live-action prequel series on Peacock, he's now set to expand his presence even more with a full-fledged Ted animated series.

While plot details are being kept secret, Ted: The Animated Series is said to be a sequel. It will continue the story after the first two Ted movies. Those hilariously funny comedy films, directed and co-written by MacFarlane, centered around the unexpected bond between a man named John Bennett and his foul-mouthed, magically sentient teddy bear, Ted. The Everybody Still Hates Chris star recently expressed hopes that the Comedy Central series will enjoy a “20-year longevity,” matching the likes of long-running animated shows like The Simpsons (1989-present) and Family Guy (1999-present).

“To do it again animated, we can go forever,” said Crews in an interview. “That’s the plan. Let’s get some of that Family Guy, Simpsons kinda stuff. I want that 20-year longevity on that show.”

Per Deadline, Fox has just renewed the following animated shows: Krapopolis, Grimsburg, and Universal Basic Guys. The news follows the network recently giving four-season renewals of the long-running animated shows The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob's Burgers, and American Dad!. In the case of American Dad!, the series also is making its return to Fox after making the move from TBS, though it originally aired its first nine seasons on Fox.

Krapopolis is currently in its second season, which is concluding this month. The show, created by Dan Harmon, imagines a more zany version of ancient Greek lore where humans interact with gods and mythical creatures. It had previously been renewed through Season 4, and the new renewal by Fox will guarantee a fifth season of the show.

No one loves a good parody like the folks over on "Family Guy." From poking fun at the works of Stephen King to riffing on "Star Wars" (but don't expect to ever see a "Family Guy" parody of the prequels), the animated sitcom reigns supreme in the spoofing department. 

Some of the best "Family Guy" episodes are the ones that go heavy with the lampooning. Case in point: "HBO-No," a season 20 episode that aired in 2022 and goes hard on some of the greatest HBO shows of all time. Okay, saying this is one of the best episodes of the show is definitely a bit of a stretch, especially when competing with hysterical heavyweights like "Blue Harvest." Still, "HBO-No" is downright hilarious. The entire episode is dedicated to throwing jabs at "Game of Thrones," "Big Little Lies," and "Succession." Fox has greenlit more seasons of three of its adult animated series: “Universal Basic Guys,” “Grimsburg,” and “Krapopolis.”

“Grimsburg” and “Universal Basic Guys” are both returning for Season 3, while “Krapopolis” has been renewed for Season 5.

“Krapopolis,” which has received a Season 5 order ahead of Season 3, “is set in mythical ancient Greece and tells the story of a dysfunctional family of humans, gods and monsters trying to run one of the world’s first cities, while also trying their best to not kill each other in the process. The series centers on Deliria (Hannah Waddingham), goddess of self-destruction and questionable choices. As petty as she is powerful, Deliria is only interested in defending civilization if it means she’ll get more worshipers out of it than her frenemies up on Mt. Olympus,” according to the official description.

Fox is further solidifying its animation lineup, handing out renewals to Krapopolis, Grimsburg and Universal Basic Guys.

The pickups will carry the three shows through the 2025-26 season — and in the case of Krapopolis and Universal Basic Guys, beyond that. The trio of shows, all animated by the Fox-owned Bento Box Entertainment, join the long-running quartet of Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy, The Simpsons and American Dad, which all received huge, four-season renewals in April. (American Dad is returning to Fox, where its first nine seasons aired, after a decade-plus on TBS.)

Krapopolis is set to wrap up its second season later this month. Created by Dan Harmon, the series is set in an ancient Greece where humans, gods and mythical creatures interact. It has received several early renewals in the past, and the latest pickup will take it through its fifth season.

Animation continues to dominate at Fox, where Grimsburg, Krapopolis and Universal Basic Guys have all been renewed for additional seasons, TVLine has confirmed.

Grimsburg Season 2 is averaging 619,000 total viewers (with delayed playback), down just 8% from its freshman run. Out of the nine comedies that Fox has aired this TV season, it ranks next-to-last in audience. The renewal is for Season 3.

Exclusive: Fox is continuing with its animation fix. The network has renewed three of its animated series — Grimsburg, Krapoplis and Universal Basic Guys.

This follows its bumper deal to renew long-running hits The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers, as well as returning series American Dad, for four more seasons.

Grimsburg, which stars Jon Hamm, is returning for Season 3, Krapopolis returns for Season 5 and Universal Basic Guys is back for Season 3.

Grimsburg, which premiered in January 2024, centers on Marvin Flute (Hamm), who may be the greatest detective ever to catch a cannibal clown and correctly identify a mid-century modern armoire. But there’s one mystery he still can’t crack — himself. To do that he must return to Grimsburg, a town where everyone has a secret or three, and redeem himself in the eyes of his fellow detectives, his ferocious ex-wife and his lovably unstable son.

The world of Ted will continue. Peacock has ordered a new animated series inspired by the film and the recent live-action series on the streaming service. It will be a sequel to the film. MacFarlane is set to reprise the voice of the iconic and loveable foul-mouthed teddy bear “Ted,” and will also executive produce all episodes alongside executive producers Paul Corrigan and Brad Walsh (Modern Family), who also executive produced the live-action series Ted.

The original film franchise stars returning as series regulars to voice their roles include Mark Wahlberg as “John,” Amanda Seyfried as “Sam,” and Jessica Barth (Ted & Ted 2) as “Tami-Lynn.”

The additional series regulars include Kyle Mooney as “Apollo” and Liz Richman as “Ruth.” The series comes from UCP (a division of Universal Studio Group), Fuzzy Door, and MRC.

Peacock has given a series order to “Ted: The Animated Series,” the working title for an animated spinoff of the 2012 and 2015 live-action comedy film franchise created and directed by Seth MacFarlane, who starred with Mark Wahlberg.

The order further expands the franchise following the success of “Ted,” Peacock’s live-action prequel series.

MacFarlane of course will voice Ted, the foul-mouthed, magical talking teddy bear at the center of the story, with Wahlberg providing the voice of Ted’s human companion, John Bennett.

Also returning from the original films are Amanda Seyfried as John’s girlfriend, Sam Jackson, and Jessica Barth as Ted’s wife, Tami-Lynn.

Joining them are Kyle Mooney as the voice of “Apollo,” most likely Ted and Tami-Lynn’s adopted son from “Ted 2,” and Liz Richman (“Little America”), who plays “Polly” on Peacock’s “Ted” live-action series and will voice “Ruth” for the cartoon.

Breaking Bear has just been announced, and the animated show is set to feature a standout voice cast that includes Brendan Fraser and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Fraser will be best known to many for leading the cast of The Mummy (1999) and its two sequels, but he has also appeared in a host of other film projects, recently experiencing a major acting comeback with his Oscar-winning performance in The Whale (2022). Gellar, on the other hand, rose to fame around the same time with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and recently appeared in Dexter: Original Sin.

Per Deadline, Fraser, Gellar, Annie Murphy, Elizabeth Hurley, and Josh Gad have been cast to lead Breaking Bear, a new adult animated series from Tubi. The series, which is created by Julien Nitzberg, is said to parody the tropes of mobster movies, with the report stating that the show will be akin to a comedic combination of Yogi Bear and The Sopranos.

From becoming the youngest showrunner in television history with The Family Guy to being berated by the creators of The Simpsons and especially South Park, Seth MacFarlane has had a complicated reputation in Hollywood.
