Netflix briefly jousted with the idea for a “A Knight’s Tale” sequel, but ultimately passed after its algorithm found the concept would be unsuccessful on the streamer.
Director Brian Helgeland told Inverse that following the release of the 2001 film starring late actor
Heath Ledger, a sequel was shopped to studio Sony and then Netflix. The first concept was a “meh” for Sony — the second made it to the desks of the streamer. Netflix walked away after its algorithm showed the concept for “A Knight’s Tale 2” would “not be successful” among its audience.
“When we finished ‘A Knight’s Tale,’ we were already thinking about making the sequel as a pirate film,” Helgeland said. “The plot revolved around Count Adhemar kidnapping Jocelyn and taking her to Constantinople. They end up as galley slaves after their boat is captured by pirates. There’s a prisoner on the boat who has a treasure map tattooed on his back,...

Brian Helgeland's 2001 film "A Knight's Tale" is based on the first of the Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, but it has as much to do with 14th-century medieval literature as "Wayne's World." The film features characters singing Queen songs and one of the characters invents the Nike "swoop" as a brand for her armor. The story involves William Thatcher (Heath Ledger) a handsome young cove who aims to win jousting tournaments and be welcomed as one of the king's knights. It's a raucous, lightweight, silly movie that is deeply beloved by a very specific age group, that is: those who were between 15 and 17 in May of 2001.
It also depicted Ledger at the height of his heartthrob powers, as well as Paul Bettany (as Chaucer), Rufus Sewell as the villain, Shannyn Sossamon as Ledger's would-be paramour, and a trio of brilliant comedian sidekicks in Mark Addy, Laura Fraser, and Alan Tudyk.

'A Knight's Tale' sequel was scrapped by the Netflix algorithm, according to director Brian Helgeland. The 63-year-old filmmaker has been keen to shoot a follow-up to his 2001 medieval comedy classic - which starred Heath Ledger, Paul Bettany and Alan Tudyk - but despite the original movie's enduring popularity, the streaming platform has decided against it.He told Inverse magazine: "I pitched it to Sony because they own the rights, and it seemed like they were interested in making it with Netflix, releasing it as a Netflix movie.“My understanding is that Netflix tested this sequel idea through their algorithms, which indicated that it would not be successful."‘A Knight’s Tale’ seems to get more popular with every passing year; it’s the strangest thing.”Helgeland and the team already had big plans for a sequel almost 20 years ago when they finished work on the original movie. He recalled:...

The Netflix computer turned down the idea of making A Knight’s Tale 2, according to director Brian Helgeland.
Well, we haven’t quite reached the future dystopian hellscape promised by 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day yet. However, when we do – and the human race is fighting for its life against sentient AIs hellbent on our destruction – this day may seem like a key step in that direction.
According to Brian Helgeland, the director of 2001’s A Knight’s Tale, Netflix passed on making a sequel to his movie because its algorithm told executives that the film wouldn’t be a success.
Oh dear. Assuming this story is true, it marks another depressing step in the surrendering of our creative powers on the altar of technology.

“A Knight’s Tale” director Brian Helgeland revealed in a career retrospective interview with Inverse that his efforts to make a sequel to his 2001 medieval action-comedy classic were apparently thwarted by the Netflix algorithm.
“When we finished ‘A Knight’s Tale,’ we were already thinking about making the sequel as a pirate film,” Helgeland said. “The plot revolved around Count Adhemar (Rufus Sewell) kidnapping Jocelyn (Shannyn Sossamon) and taking her to Constantinople. They end up as galley slaves after their boat is captured by pirates. There’s a prisoner on the boat who has a treasure map tattooed on his back, but he keeps getting flogged for indiscipline. A potential sequel to “A Knight’s Tale,” the 2001 period comedy that starred the late Heath Ledger as an aspiring knight, was killed by the Netflix algorithm, according to director Brian Helgeland.
“I pitched it to Sony because they own the rights, and it seemed like they were interested in making it with Netflix and releasing it as a Netflix movie,” the original film’s writer-director told Inverse in an interview published Monday. “My understanding is that Netflix tested this sequel idea through their algorithms, which indicated that it would not be successful.”
He said he was surprised at that, because “‘A Knight’s Tale’ seems to get more popular with every passing year; it’s the strangest thing.”
Helgeland’s idea was to make a pirate sequel right after the first film wrapped, he said, detailing the proposed plot.

Netflix’s “Scoop” is inspired by the real events behind the bold efforts of “Newsnight” booker Sam McAlister to secure an interview with Prince Andrew amidst the fallout he felt from his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Robert Englund steps into the director’s chair with ‘976-Evil,’ a dark dive into Satanism and demonology where a bullied outcast uses an occult hotline to bite back.
“Out of the darkness and into light, comes your horrorscope on this dark and stormy night.”
Robert Englund is a name who needs no introduction in the horror community. He’s played Freddy Krueger in eight A Nightmare on Elm Street movies and has brought life to one of the horror genre’s greatest icons. Englund’s incomparable work as Krueger would be enough to forever make him a celebrity, but he’s had a rich horror career that’s included multiple roles in Tobe Hooper films and, more recently, his standout performance as Victor Creel in the streaming phenomenon, Stranger Things. 2023 has felt like things are starting to get back on track for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic. The year has seen some fantastic films and box office numbers hitting some great heights, in particular that phenomena that was the Barbie and Oppenheimer weekend. It’s clear for the first time, in a long time that cinema is starting to look in good shape once again. While there are many films that are yet to be released in the UK that have made many other best of the year lists, here are my 10 favourite films realised in the UK in 2023.
10. Wonka (Paul King)
For many perhaps the biggest surprise of the year, but for fans of Paul King it comes as no surprise that this version of Wonka is the most fun he’s ever been. Invoking some of what makes Frank Capra so brilliant, the film feels like a community coming together,...

What’s Bad: The movie doesn’t know what it wants to be, or what it is, and the entire plot feels pointless.

Hollywood is overflowing with stories about films that took years of blood, sweat and tears to bring to the screen. Brian Helgeland’s Finestkind represents one of the longest kinds.
The Oscar-winning screenwriter of Mystic River and veteran director of such films as Legend, 42, A Knight’s Tale and Payback finished the script when he was 28. I just had to wait for this whole cast to grow up so I could cast them,” he explained at the film’s West Hollywood premiere on Tuesday referring to his actors who star opposite Tommy Lee Jones, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Aaron Stanford, Scotty Tovar, Tim Daly, Lolita Davidovich and Clayne Crawford.

Julia Stiles channeled a popular character from her past recently and looked quite shocked by the script all these years later.
Earlier this week, the Mash-Up Americans Book Festival in New York City set up Stiles to revive Katarina “Kat” Stratford from the hit 1999 film 10 Things I Hate About You. In the big-screen teen rom-com, Kat reads a “hateful” poem to Patrick Verona, a bad boy portrayed by Heath Ledger.
“I hate the way you’re always right. I hate it when you lie. I hate it when you make me laugh, even worse when you make me cry,” the poem reads in part.
Toward the end of the reading, Stiles appears to get emotional recalling the scene. Her co-star Ledger died in 2008 at the age of 28. 10 Things I Hate About You is one of Ledger’s most popular films alongside A Knight’s Tale, Casanova, The Dark Knight and Brokeback Mountain,...

“Finestkind,” the name of both Brian Helgeland’s new film and the high-line fishing boat Tommy Lee Jones captains within it, is one of those words that New Englanders find hard to define, but seem to have no trouble using in a sentence. It means quality — of fish, of people, of principles — and it sets the bar for the shaggy family portrait Helgeland crafts around two half-brothers wrestling with their place in the blue-collar New Bedford community.
The movie, alas, is just so-so, tripping over its own feet for the first couple reels until such time as the siblings cross the Northern Line to (illegally) dredge for scallops in Canadian waters, and then it gets good. As Taylor Swift once said, “August slipped away like a moment in time,” and August 2023 has been no different. Summer starts to come to a close at the end of August as kids head back to school, Labor Day looms and folks soak up those last few days before the official start of fall on Sept. 21. Netflix will say goodbye to some important titles at the end of this month as well.
The majority of films leaving Netflix will leave on the last day, so there is still time to squeeze some in before the month fully ends. Those leaving the streamer Aug. 31 include “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “Mean Girls,” the “Open Season” films, “Paranormal Activity,” “The Ring” and “Sleepless in Seattle” among others.

Despite the ongoing SAG-AFTRA actors and WGA writers strikes, the Toronto Film Festival continues to turn up the star wattage for its 48th edition, adding movies with Dakota Johnson, Bérénice Bejo, Awkwafina, Sandra Oh and Mads Mikkelsen to its lineup on Thursday.
For the Gala section, TIFF unveiled the A-list heavy crime drama Finestkind from Brian Helgeland, the Oscar-winning writer-director behind Mystic River and L.A. Confidential; and A Knight’s Tale, which stars Ben Foster, Jenna Ortega, Tommy Lee Jones and Toby Wallace.
Also headed to Roy Thomson Hall is the South Korean drama A Normal Family, directed by Hur Jin-ho, the Korean auteur who in the past premiered Dangerous Liaisons and April Snow in Toronto. TIFF earlier tapped fellow Korean director Ryoo Seung-wan’s Smugglers for its Special Presentations sidebar, and has now bumped that drama up to a gala screening in Toronto after a world bow in Locarno.

A version of this story about Rufus Sewell first ran in the Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Apart from its geopolitical intrigue, “The Diplomat” is a series about a smart, driven pair of overachievers who can be a great team or can end up wrestling in the bushes while she swings tree branches at him. At the heart of the show is the relationship between Keri Russell’s Kate and Rufus Sewell’s Hal, a married couple of diplomats whose marriage may or may not be ending, but is both provocative and amusing with its nonstop mixture of flirting and fighting.
For Sewell, a 55-year-old British actor whose previous work has included “A Knight’s Tale,” “The Father” and “The Man in the High Castle,” the series supplied the kind of blend he’s been looking for through most of his career.

Are you ready to go for the Full Monty once again?
It's been 25 years since the cult classic had this group of out-of-work steel workers taking it all off in Sheffield, England.
Will they do it again?
You'll have to watch the trailer below to find out.
The new eight-part series follows the same band of brothers as they navigate the post-industrial city of Sheffield and society's crumbling healthcare, education, and employment sectors.
The comedy-drama will uncover what happened to the gang after they put their kit back on, exploring their brighter, sillier, and some of their more desperate moments.
But the series will also highlight how the fiercely funny world of these working-class heroes – still residing in Sheffield – has changed in the intervening decades.
Fans of the movie won't be disappointed as many of the original cast members are returning, including Robert Carlyle as "Gaz," Mark Addy as "Dave,...

It felt good didn’t it? Watching a fantasy film where folks could crack a smile and actually enjoy their adventure. There was certainly danger and monsters in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves—not to mention the roleplaying tabletop game’s namesakes!—but that didn’t mean you couldn’t enjoy the ride.
In the last 20 years, fantasy has largely come to take itself exceedingly seriously where the fate of kingdoms or the entire world often hangs in the balance, and the central heroes who may start merry end the story broken, traumatized, and in a few instances ready to murder their homicidal lover… who is also their aunt.
This past weekend’s winsome D&d movie did away with all that, instead favoring some good old-fashioned romping to go along with a pure cut of high fantasy. If you enjoyed the experience, here are some other fantasy movies we recommend to continue the fun.

"Crash" winning Best Picture over "Brokeback Mountain" is easily one of the biggest upsets in modern Oscar history. The Academy's decision was already highly contentious and has only aged like sour milk in the decades since. Ang Lee's tragic romance, on the other hand, remains a touchstone for positive queer representation in mainstream cinema. To dismiss it as the embodiment of the "Bury Your Gays" trope is to approach the film in a vacuum. At a time when homophobic humor intended to assuage the insecurities of straight audiences was commonplace in Hollywood, Lee and his "Brokeback" actors dared to take the story of two men falling in love seriously.
According to Deadline, the tale of cowboys Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist is getting a new lease on life thanks to a London stage production based on Annie Proulx's original 1997 short story (not Lee's movie). Mike Faist and...

A nun teams up with an enemy AI to find the Holy Grail. That synopsis sounds like it was written– well, by an AI, but actually it comes from Damon Lindelof and Tara Hernandez, who premiered their eclectic drama at South by Southwest on Tuesday.
At the premiere, star Betty Gilpin described the show as “No country for old Looney Tunes” and laughed afterward, saying they had just shared “the two normal episodes.” Costar Jake McDornan described the scripts as “mad libs that snowballed out of control.”
“The missive here is ‘Keep Austin weird,'” Lindelof said ahead of the March 14 premiere. “‘Mrs. Davis’ is hopefully going to do just that.” The first two episodes had the crowd laughing at scripted jokes, visual gags, and general absurdity, including multiple high-octane action sequences.

"Resident Alien" star Alan Tudyk has had a number of memorable roles throughout his career. In terms of movies, long-time fans look back fondly on the parts he played in "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story," "A Knight's Tale," and "Tucker & Dale vs Evil." He even had that memorable guest spot on an episode of "Frasier" as the new owner of Kacl that Dr. Crane takes under his wing. Although, his most beloved role to date is probably still the fun-loving pilot Hoban "Wash" Washburne from Joss Whedon's "Firefly" and its feature film sequel "Serenity."
However, to many members of his modern fanbase, Tudyk is likely more known for his voiceover work. The late great Heath Ledger is mostly remembered for his versatility onscreen. Never daring to shy away from a challenge, he jumped from genre to genre. Whether drama, fantasy, romantic comedy, he was always up for an adventure and, as a casual observer of his work, Ledger was one of those talents that seamlessly slipped into whatever role he took on. From "Brokeback Mountain," where he played the leading love interest to Jake Gyllenhaal's character, to playing a California surfer-type in "Lords of Dogtown," and most notably portraying one of the best Jokers in cinema history in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight," he truly could do it all.
However, at the very beginning of his career when he was cast in the teen comedy, "10 Things I Hate About You," the future could have gone completely differently for Ledger. Cast as the contrarian rebellious bad boy Patrick Verona,...

Netflix subscribers looking to save some money now have the option to sign up for a cheaper, ad-supported tier. The Basic with Ads plan costs 6.99 per month rather than 9.99 for the basic plan without ads, and gives subscribers access to a decent amount of the streaming service’s extensive library. However, according to Variety and GameSpot, there are a number of TV shows and movies that unfortunately aren’t available to watch for people subscribing to Netflix’s newest tier.
Netflix’s Chief Operating Officer Greg Peters did tell reporters back in October that a “limited number of movies and TV shows won’t be available due to licensing restrictions, and [Netflix is] going to be working on reducing that over time,” but even with the new tier launching Nov. 3, Netflix still hasn’t released an official list showing what is and isn’t available to its Basic with Ads subscribers. The day has finally arrived: Netflix has ads.
On Thursday, the streaming giant officially released its “Basic with Ads” tier in the United States. The cheap(er) subscription plan includes four to five minutes of ads per hour, with each ad being about 15-30 seconds long. These spots play both before titles and in the middle of films and TV episodes. There’s certain exceptions; when new Netflix original films coming to the streamer, like “Knives Out 2,” all ads play before the movie starts. However, not all movies have the ad-tier option.
Four of the movies on the streamer’s current Top 10 are unavailable on the plan. Those titles still appear in searches on the ad tier, but they’re marked with a red lock icon in the right-hand of its thumbnail. Clicking on an unavailable film opens up a window prompting the user to change their subscription in order to access the content.

Detective Enola Holmes is on the case again! Netflix has just released the full trailer for "Enola Holmes 2," the follow-up to 2020's "Enola Holmes." Millie Bobby Brown stars as the younger sister of legendary detective Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill) who has been raised by her mother Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter) to be something more than the typical young woman of the time in London. When her mother disappeared in the first film and left her clues, Enola set out to find her, despite her gender, age, and the men around her working against her.
The original film -- based on Nancy Springer's "Enola Holmes Mysteries" book series -- was originally set to be released in theaters, but the pandemic changed all that. "Enola Holmes" ended up as one of Netflix's most-watched new releases in 2020 though, and for good reason. It was a lovely film about a young woman...

The tale of the young, star-crossed lovers known as "Romeo & Juliet" has been told and retold for centuries, but Hulu and 20th Century Studios have a whole new perspective to bring to the table. In a comedic twist on William Shakespeare's classic romantic tragedy, the tale of "Romeo & Juliet" is being retold through the lens of Rosaline, the gal Romeo was exclusively dating before he ran into Juliet at a party and completely turned his entire life (and family) upside down. Rosaline is devastated when she learns that her boyfriend has left her for someone new, and goes on a mission to break the two of them up and win back the man of her dreams.
"Rosaline" looks to be taking the anachronistic approach of Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo + Juliet" and inverting it, with classic period garb and set dressings injected with contemporary language and sensibilities.

In her second directorial effort this year, Lena Dunham forgoes the adult themes of Sharp Stick to tell a more traditional coming-of-age story about a headstrong teenage girl living in medieval times. A significant departure from most of her previous work, the playfully broad Catherine Called Birdy, premiering at the Toronto Film Festival, is a sincere effort at the sort of classic young adult films that populated the 90s and early 2000s. Young-adult storytelling has always been more than brooding love triangles and devastating wars, but in a post-Hunger Games world it’s easy to forget the smaller, more personal stories. Luckily, Dunham has no trouble remembering Karen Cushman’s 1994 novel on which this film is based, capturing the book’s humorous diary format with cheeky voiceover narration.
In the early 1200s, Lady Catherine (Bella Ramsey) is a girl on the cusp of womanhood.

Aside from being a rollicking, romantic romp, The Mummy (1999) has carved out an iconic place among movie lovers for what Tor.com’s Leah Schnelbach describes as its chaotic bisexual energy. Here is a movie with an ensemble cast whose combined hotness, sheer charisma, and bucking of gender and societal norms make it so that anyone can see themselves in a variety of characters—and perhaps make some breakthroughs in realizing who they’re attracted to.
As Maggie Tokuda-Hall summed up, “Hot people being horny on main; campy violence; himbos.” But while The Mummy is a unique modern classic, it’s not the only one to spark a bisexual awakening among fans: May I present its equally chaotic bisexual contemporary, Brian Helgeland’s delightful 2001 film, A Knight’s Tale.
Layering medieval anachronism over the familiar beats of a sports narrative, only with jousting replacing football or baseball, A Knight’s Tale succeeds...

Another summer of content has come and gone in the streaming world. And to celebrate the arrival of fall, Netflix is filling its list of new releases for September 2022 with, what else? More content!
Netflix is never shy about loading up its servers each month but September 2022 is a particularly packed time for the streamer, particularly when it comes to movies. The list of prominent Netflix original movies includes: road trip thriller End of the Road (Sept. 9), Maya Hawke and Camila Mendes-starring dark comedy Do Revenge (Sept. 16), and the Marilyn Monroe epic biopic Blonde (Sept. 28).
That’s not even to mention the usual arrival of new library titles, which are particularly juicy this fall. September 1 sees the arrival of A Clockwork Orange, Clueless, Scarface, and more. Meanwhile This is the End is set to roll on Sept. 16.

Summer is almost over. You can feel it as the days are getting longer. You can smell it as the air gets a little cooler and that first bit of foliage starts to fall. While the heat is still raging in large swaths of the U.S. (which this streaming list has been composed for), the truth is things are starting to quiet down.
In that vein, it’s a perfect time to curl up with someone and “Netflix and chill” as the kids might say. It’s also just a good time to revisit some old favorites, which Netflix is bringing back to the streaming service in droves. Here are the best of those gems.

The Pitch: Can we change our stars? Can we choose something different than what life has offered us? That's the question "A Knight's Tale" asks. It's the story of a 14th century impoverished squire named William (Heath Ledger), whose father sent him off to work with a knight who passes away while resting from a tournament. William has grown up watching this knight...

What makes a story a “classic?” It’s a vague yet glorious distinction applied to books, films, art, and even models of vintage cars whose value is passed down from one generation to the next. But is it just the length of time a text or work survives that qualifies it as a “classic” or is there something more?
Generally speaking, the classics that tend to be celebrated one generation after another, and especially those that are passed down from one century to another, are works that speak of something timeless. The times we live in will change, culture will change, and even our values change. But the experience of living, of loving, of losing (to name just a few such topics)? Those will remain as universal as the human experience is long.
Hence adapting a classic work for a modern audience, whether on film, television, or TikTok, is admirable.

Gather round, for it is "A Knight's Tale" I am speaking of! Over two decades have passed since the captivating underdog story satiated audiences with its thrilling jousting sequences and anachronistic soundtrack. Why, listen to such divine artists as Queen, David Bowie, and AC/DC roar across the list field, matching the enthusiasm of the spectators. The harmony of such entertainment could overshadow the joust, but alas, try as they may, it is the one, the only, Heath Ledger ("The Dark Knight") who exemplifies the fiery beating heart of such a picture.
