A typical observation that still applies today.
The literal translation of the title of this movie is: The Rose with Many Thorns.

Audience needs to know some Chinese ideas about romance in order to understand this movie:

In Chinese culture, women are depicted as flowers and typically, flowers that are fragrant are usually not extremely pretty, while those extremely pretty flowers are usually not fragrant, applying to women, those with good look often do not have good attitudes, while those with good attitudes often are not that pretty. For flowers with both fragrance and beauty, they are usually very thorny, i.e. women with both good look and good attitudes are difficult to get.
