I've seen few Brazilian movies in my life and as much as the few I saw were not bad, they were also nothing special. This one is different. This one is something special, a hidden gem. It stands apart from other Brazilian movies.
In many ways this is a touching and even heavy-subjected movie, but it also has a feeling of nostalgia and some fantasy in it to compensate for the heaviest parts. It's such a simple movie yet it is magnificent.
Júlio César Cruz's performance as Zézé is superb. The same for Aurélio Teixeira as Manuel Valadares ("Portuga"). Not only Aurélio Teixeira acted in this movie, he also directed it.
There is a remake but it was okay at best. I shouldn't be surprised with that. After all, in most cases the originals are superior.
