...how lonesome I can be!I've got nobody to tell my troubles to..etc Well,the artist of the movie is no teenage idol,but an operetta singer Willy Régis played by an operetta singer (now forgotten ,except for the lovers of the genre) Willy Thunis (who made few movies,he was probably not good-looking enough).He is a successful ,a true star ,and every night, performs on stage "Paradis D'Amour" ;the first sequence in which he is made up as a Japanese is pure Kitsch .
But although he 's found fortune and fame and lots of people know his name ,he wants to be loved for himself and that's a hard task.He meets an old busker on the street and incognito sings for him : the music sheets (where people could find words and music,gramophones being luxury to be found in desirable apartments only) sell like hot cakes and the old guy makes a lot of money.He invites his pal for lunch and you would never guess it: he's got a gorgeous granddaughter (played by Josette Day ,famous for her part in Cocteau's "La Belle La Bête" );Shall I tell more? "N'aimer Que Toi" (loving only you) is not only the title of the movie ,it's also a maudlin song Thunis croons to Day.It follows the rules of melodrama with a Cinderella touch thrown in for good measure .
