  • Well, okay, so the film is basically a big lump of c**p. But it's good c**p, ie the entertaining kind. And if you ever have the chance to see the film in a theater IN 3D, then SEE IT! Words can not describe how much more entertaining the film gets, and before this it's already wacked out enough for ten movies, but then you give the nutcases behind the camera the 3D technique, and they use it when ever they can, to hilarious results, scenes that appear to be in the film just so they can show off some 3D stuff. Anyway, I actually gave this movie a 6, even though it really doesn't deserve it in terms of actual quality, but it was so outrageously ridiculous that I couldn't resist...

    Warning: Spoilers
Mei-Chun Chang made another 3D kung fu movie we covered, Dynasty, so we were super excited to get this movie, also known as 13 Golden Nuns.

Thirteen women are ravaged by bandits and the rules of the time state that they must go to a convent. What the rules did not state was that they would spend their time there studying the martial arts and gaining all of the skills that they would need to murder those that did them wrong.

I mean, take it from the film itself: "In 18th century China, bandit hordes roamed the provinces pillaging and plundering villages. Whole villages were decimated. Men, women and children slaughtered and the women raped. According to the social customs of the times, the rape victims, because they were no longer virgins, were sent to convents. Under the austere and knowledgeable presence of the Head Shogun Nun, these girls were taught the Revelations of the Budha and mastered the techniques of the martial arts. They became Shogun women capable of defending themselves and others from the bandit marauders."

Look, someone gets scalped in 3D. I think that's worth more than the price of this blu ray. There's some wedding drama - a young woman is marrying an old doctor because the only way he can do acupuncture on her breast is to marry her so it's not inappropriate and the artist who loves her calls in the bandits because, well, it's a kung fu movie. The real reason to watch this is to see arrows come out of the screen.
  • My review was written in January 1982 after a Times Square screening: Originally titled "13 Nuns" in 1977, "Revenge of the Shogun Women" is a first-time U. S. release of this 3-D kung fu pic, aimed at action audiences and fans curious about the current revival of depth films. Incredibly bad English-language dubbing and exaggerated "poke 'em in the eye" 3-D photography mark this item as suitable only for the most diehard fans.

Nominal plot, made incoherent by the dubbing and loose structuring of individual action episodes, deals with young women in China in 1794 who are raped by bandits in a sexploitation featuring nudity and simulated sex in 3-D. Main action picks up in 1797 in Chang-Chow village, where the 13 heroines, looking exotic with nearly shaved-head butch haircuts, are training as nuns in a convent, with martial arts high on their curriculum. Shogun of film's current title is meaningless, lifted from Japanese history to spruce up this picture's superimposed narrative crawl.

Very similar, though not as exciting, to the same production team's "Dynasty" picture, "Women" features attractive sets and costumes amidst its too-frequent thrusting of spears and poles out towards the viewer's nose. Violent content is adequate for chopsocky fans, but the insistence on pointing objects at the audience causes eye-strain as one resists becoming cross-eyed. Enthusiasts of filming-in-depth will have to wait for the next batch of 35mm 3-D efforts, or perhaps the promised twin-70mm super-productions, for satisfaction.
  • In ancient China, after being raped and attacked by a gang of rebels, a group of woman become nuns to cope with what happened. But many years later, they find themselves confronted by the same rebels and must choose to either ignore them, or fight them to the death to prevent other woman from the same fate they suffered.

This film sucks. Sorry, it does. Visual quality wise, it's pretty bad - lots of dirt and grime, muddied colors and blurry images. It has plenty of 3D pop out sure and some of it even made me flinch as it shot towards my eyes but it still wasn't clear. The story can be hard to follow at times because a lot of the characters all look the same and the film moves at an awkward pace. The only redeeming aspect of the film I liked was that the movie starts fast, right in the middle of the action and rape scenes actually, and it also uses immediate 3D effects. There is a little bit of a "so bad it's good" effect when it comes to the voice dubbing - the dialouge is so idiotically simple and the voices don't always match the faces that I couldn't help but smile or laugh regularly.

Final Verdict: I really didn't like it. Poor visual quality, bland story and bad (although admittedly unintentionally funny) voice dubbing make this hard to watch. It has effective yet repetative 3D effects and some of the violence is fun in a gory way even if it's totally unbelievable but there isn't any reason to really recommend this in this day and age. Just skip it.
  • Warning: Spoilers
I.m.d.b. Had just a mishap that I had to start all over again. It has been April since the 3D archives have restored this silver age Kung fu classic. It's a sequel to Dynasty. The project has been financed by 3D fans from Kick-Starters through the generous donation of fans,3D fans that is. The first time I saw it was at the martin twin theater, where I lived in 82. The print was good, but, time has not been too kind to it. The 3D archives got it on time. There are some sequences, very quick and short, that just could not be improved by color correction. Like the sequence in which Dr. Choa, played by Shiusen Leong, was at the cave creating his bombs to protect his village from the possible bandit, the tints had shifted to a degree on the pink side. A rape sequence in which one of the girls that thrown behind a bale of hay as the bandits raped her. The color had shrunk way down. These sequences are very short, the rest of the film the color correction is well-balanced. As I said, this is a sequel to dynasty. The same props that were used as a Buddhist temple, Buddhist nunnery. Guess who plays the bad guy again, as he did in Dynasty? The Eunichow gay character, or suggested it from Dynasty, now the leader bandit, played by Ying Bai. The actor who played the older Buddhist in dynasty, Chang Ma, now plays one of the younger bandits. In this film, the bandits had raids the village in the begging and attack all the virgins. Under such customs, no man want them. They end up having to go to a Buddhist convent and become a nun and learn self-defense. How oppressive that was back then. Now another village gets prepared to possibly defends them self. A young artist played by. Cheng Ku, is madly in love with a village girl, played by Hisiang Chin Hang, whom he is painting a picture of her. She is in love with Dr Chow. She and Dr Chow manged to convinced her parents, the father played by Ying Lee, to let them get married by coming up with an Idea that she needs therapy using acupuncture for her breast. You never see how Mr chow does it, but, he gets revenge. He manages to find the bandits, you don't see how he does it, to tell them they could raid the village, but, he wants the girl. This is during the wedding of the couple that the bandits raid their village. This is when the women have been sent to the Buddhist nuns and some other village for protection. The men stay and fight. Before the village daughter's father dies after throwing the bombs on the bad guys and missing the leaders and the others, Ying Bai wants to know who created the bombs. The young women and the daughter all in the convent, after second thought the leader allows them to stay. The Kung Fu in 3D is interesting. The scene in which a sword hits one of the villagers just flies off the screen. The leading nun refuses to fight the bandits as the other nuns are force to fight them, until she has to deal with Ying Bai. He ends in a hair-raising end. The 3d cinema photography was good, although there were some baked in problems due to the nature of the 3d cameras, it was minor. Also, a part of this show included three 3D shorts. Two made in 1953, one made in 73. The first one is in the i.md.b.please turn to that title. The 53 Lippert version. Now back to this. The other short is a strip tease one called Persian slave Market. It shows three different women in black n white doing a strip tease to Beep Bop. The latter tow, one in a 1890s costume and the Arabians costume reveals themselves topless. The last one, Two men from Tick ridge, was more of a test of the 3D cameras A little plot about a man who made it as a film maker in Hollywood and invited his friend to see his new movie. Better to see it in 3D. Fun and entertaining and worth collecting. It contains two versions, Polaroid and anaglyph version, as well as 2D. 11/24/21.
