The first episode of "Pipo" was shown 17 September 1958; the last one (number 118) on 19 April 1980. For two seasons, Pipo, Mammaloe and their donkey Nononono appeared in daily 5-minute episodes for NTS.
Writer Wim Meuldijk built a new lightweight Circuswagon for Pipo de Clown in his own backyard (with an empty interior since those scenes would be filmed in the studio) to replace the heavy Rumanian original wagon. Subsequently, many of the 5 minute episodes were filmed in Meuldijk's backyard, with his own bedroom serving as make-up room, the sitting room as wardrobe department and the film camera's being stored in the children's bedrooms at night.
The name of the series antagonist 'Dikke Deur' is a mispronunciation by Kluk Kluk the Indian of the word 'Directeur' (as in Circus Director). This was an actual mistake by actor Herbert Joeks, not written in in the script. And while in this first adventure only Kluk Kluk calls the director by that name, in subsequent stories, all the characters would address him as 'Dikke Deur'.
