On the heels of his acclaimed stage performance at London’s National Theater for “Phaedra,” Assaad Bouab (“Call My Agent!,” “Bad Sisters”) is set to team with filmmaker Benjamin Ross (“The Frankenstein Chronicles”) and European production banner Asacha Media Group on “Voyager.”
“Voyager” will star Bouab as legendary Medieval explorer and philosopher Ibn Battuta who went on pilgrimage to Mecca and ended up travelling for over twenty years and over 76000 miles across Africa, India and Eurasia, more than anyone in pre-modern history. Battuta logged his experiences of the people, places and cultures he encountered along the way, writing one of the world’s earliest and most famous travelogues, The Rilah, and earning himself legendary status in history. The project is being developed as a series.
Bouab, who is half Moroccan, said “Ibn Battuta is one of the greatest explorers of all time and I would have loved to have had his life.

If once lured for brief visits by the panoply of iconic locations, international projects now linger in France to claim a competitive tax rebate and set down roots to benefit from an ever-expanding production infrastructure.
And so, fuelled by mammoth shoots like Apple TV+’s upcoming Benjamin Franklin in Paris limited series, “Franklin,” the Christian Dior-Coco Chanel bio-series “The New Look” and AMC’s “Walking Dead” spinoff “Raise the Dead,” foreign spending hit a record high last year, filling local coffers with slightly more than $1 billion and marking a 324% increase from 2019 numbers.
“This is more than a post-pandemic rebound,” says France’s National Centre for Cinema and the Moving Image (Cnc) digital director Vincent Florant. “[The industry has undergone] rapid acceleration and exponential growth. Nowadays, we host the totality of these massive shoots, whereas before we only received a part, or even, in the most extreme cases, just a few days of...

Eddie Marsan has called out the friend of a college “bully” who tried to mock him on social media.
The London-born actor, who has been in the profession since the 1990s, has racked up an impressive string of credits throughout his career, including roles in Mission: Impossible III (2006), Mike Leigh film Happy-Go-Lucky (2008), Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes (2009) and The World’s End (2013), directed by Edgar Wright.
On Monday (3 April), Marsan, 54, spotted a mean-spirited post on Twitter reading: “Do you ever scroll through Netflix, when you think that you’ve found a film to watch, all of a sudden you scream “Eww! F*** that! It’s got Eddie Marsan in it!”? It keeps happening...”
In reply, one of the actor’s former fellow students at London College of Printing School of Media in Elephant and Castle wrote: “Many years ago my oppo was at the Print College @ the Elephant. Marsan came late...

Exclusive: Laurie Zaks and her Rosewood Television banner are adapting a series of novels from Roselle Lim after striking a development deal with ITV Studios America.
Zaks, who was behind popular ABC drama series Castle, launched her company in 2021. At the time, having spent seven years as Head of Television at Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman’s Mandeville Films, she had a deal with ABC Signature.
She recently struck a deal with the U.S. arm of the British broadcaster and production group, and this marks her first major development project under that new agreement.
Rosewood Television and ITV Studios America will adapt three novels by Lim, a Canadian author of Filipino-Chinese heritage, as series. Books include Natalie Tan’s Book of Luck and Fortune, which was published in 2019; Vanessa Yu’s Magical Paris Tea Shop, which came out in 2020; and Sophie Go’s Lonely Hearts Club, which was published last year.

"Hey wait, you're about to destroy something sacred, something important, for all of humanity." Madman in Australia has unveiled an official trailer for an eco activism documentary film titled Franklin. The film takes us back to the 1980s to recall the story of an activism campaign to stop the building of a dam on the World Heritage-listed river called the Franklin River (see Google Maps). Eighth-generation Tasmanian and environmentalist Oliver Cassidy embarks on his own life-changing solo rafting trip down the beautiful yet remote Franklin River. His goal is to retrace his late father’s 14-day expedition to attend the blockade that saved the World-Heritage listed national park from being destroyed by a huge hydroelectric dam project in the early 1980s. Featuring never-before-seen archival footage and interviews with key players such as Bob Brown and Uncle Jim Everett, the eight-year-long Franklin campaign is revealed as the most significant environmental protest...

It was a strange morning for the Director’s Guild of America (DGA) Monday, as the organization announced some — but not all — of the TV nominations for the 2020 DGA Awards.
A note included in the official nomination statement explained that the nods for the Comedy Series, Dramatic Series, and Variety/Talk/News/Sports — Specials categories will be announced on Friday, rather than today as scheduled, due to an error related to the organization’s newly implemented electronic entry submissions process. The categories in question require a re-vote, the DGA explained. Variety reported last week that the DGA sent members an email stating that “Transparent” creator Jill Soloway had been mistakenly omitted from the comedy series ballot for her direction of “Transparent Musicale Finale,” and advising members to recast their vote in the category if they so chose.
Still, there were plenty of accolades to go around in the official announcement,...
