The Special Victims Unit, a specially trained squad of detectives in the NYPD, investigate sexually related crimes.
Olivia and Elliot were named after producer Dick Wolf's children. The name Olivia shows up in Benjamin Bratt's television family (as one of Rey's daughters), then there's Dr. Olivet.
Det. Monique Jefferies:
Are you gonna eat this?
John Munch: Suppose we say yes.
Det. Monique Jefferies: Suppose I was just being polite.
John Munch: That would be a first.
Brian Cassidy: Go ahead, Munch doesn't eat veggies
Det. Monique Jefferies: Really? I heard that's not the only thing John doesn't... eat.
Multiple cases are shown which have interstate or international components. While NYPD SVU detectives might cooperate in those cases, they would primarily be handled by the FBI or some other federal law enforcement agency.
From the second episode of the second season (2000-2001), the opening credits break the pattern followed by the earlier episodes of SVU, the original Law & Order, and Criminal Intent. Instead of the credits ending with a shot of the cast walking towards the camera, they instead are shown sitting around a desk.
